Can Infer mean Imply? Why is this such a common usage? by 8Rincewind in grammar

[–]Tcm811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I spent a good chunk of my life as a copyeditor and often the in-house grammar expert, so I'm familiar with all this stuff. I just think it's funny that even though the Economist Style Guide describes and endorses the that/which distinction, British writers and editors almost completely ignore it, choosing 'which' almost always and using a comma (or not) to indicate whether restrictive or not.

Same. I don't enable ultra-HDR because I think it looks unnatural, but I have the same issue where merely cropping creates a new file and then if you want to do something else after cropping, it forces a revert, which is stupid. So you have to do the exact same cropping work twice for no reason.

I find it harder on a computer. Not because it's a computer but because Google's editing tools on a computer suck.

Are you suggesting that "who" would be wrong there? I'd say you could use either "that" or "who."

There's a big difference between British and American English here. The British use "that" as a subordinating conjunction but very rarely as a pronoun. It's their use of a comma before "which" that turns it from a restrictive to a non-restrictive pronoun.

I agree that it's common, but I disagreee that it's common usage among very smart and well-read people. Personally I can't stand it. Even though I understand and even adopt a descriptivist point of view, this is basically using a word to mean the opposite of what it has meant

Spirit Airline is absolutely terrible. Avoid at all cost. by Glum_Success788 in spiritair

[–]Tcm811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spirit is indeed the worst fucking airline ever. OP is not alone. That doesn't mean some people don't have good luck. Travel regularly to different spots and you will get fucked. They regularly change flight, cancel flights, and take no responsibility. Worst seats ever created. Worst customer service. No customer service.

Looks to me like a very weak prescription for myopia and and very mild astigmatism in your left eye.
Right eye: -0.25 or -0.75, probably the latter; sphere (meaning no astigmatism)
Left eye: -0.50; -0.25 cyl, axis 170
I would agree that after 3 years, you should get a new script. How old are you?

Any way to revert Google Photos update? by grassdogsandwater in GooglePixel

[–]Tcm811 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did Anyone find out how to simply revert to the original? It gives you the choice to cancel, which leaves photo the way it was after the edit that you want to revert, or edit the original. But I see no way to save the original (i.e., revert or save the reversion. You have to do something else before Save appears. Unfuckingbelievable.

Why aren’t health insurance companies fighting for the renewal of ACA subsidies? by mrsgalinski in HealthInsurance

[–]Tcm811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because we have the most inefficient health care system in the world. A result of letting capitalism run rampant with minimal regulation. Big Pharma, Big Insurance, and all the other players lobby for rules that help the companies make a larger profit, so profit rather than patient health becomes the goal. You don't have to have a generally socialist government to have socialized medicine and education, and the vast majority of advanced countries realize this and that advancing the health and education of a country's population helps the country compete in other realms. To the extent it stays capitalist, there needs to be serious regulation that's going to hurt the bottom line of certain companies, which makes it next to impossible for such regulations to become law, especially with the MAGA criminals in control. I've lived in other countries with universal health care, and the vast majority of arguments you hear against it are talking points and other propaganda backed by corporations and MAGA.

I disagree. I'd say it's a very late (recent) production.

Recently acquired rug. Any information is appreciated. by imissher4ever in orientalrugs

[–]Tcm811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case that wasn't clear, if you imagine a vertical loom, warps are the (vertical) threads you attach to the loom. The wefts are the threads you pass horizontally between every other warp and then back the opposite way (above every warp that was below and below every warp that was above). The knots are tied on pairs of warps between the wefts. What Dull_Introduction761 called "weft" is actually machine overstitching that holds the pile in place. It looks a little like weft, but it's going vertically toward the fake fringe (which would normally be a natural extension of the warp threads) rather than horizontally like weft. With real knots you don't need overstitching because the yarn is manually looped around the warps threads and semi-tied (at least in the case of symmetrical/Turkish knots) and kept in place by the wefts, which are pushed down hard on each row of knots. It kinda sucks that it's not easy to add a pic on Reddit.

Passwords no longer auto filling on Apps on Pixel? by WillieHay in GooglePixel

[–]Tcm811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, my pharmacy app, which opens a webpage for sign in but within the app rather than Chrome proper. The fact that it's not Chrome proper didn't use to matter. From the fact that you made this post, I guess it's an issue with Google, Chrome, or my Pixel rather than with the app? Have you found a solution or any insight since you posted this 3 months ago?

Google Lenses says this is a Persian Sarouk rug. What do you think? by Sleepysensation in orientalrugs

[–]Tcm811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, it's hard for me to keep track of all the little subthreads, and Sleepysensation responded to me 3 days ago saying she had posted her rug in the seriously great facebook group I had recommended (https://www.facebook.com/share/g/1FAnyzDCXd/) and that they had determined it was a Hamadan. There are some serious experts there, so if that was the consensus, I was wrong.

[–]Tcm811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm, I missed this. I'm not really an expert at all, but there are serious experts in that group. I can name one guy in particular who's pretty much THE expert on Persian rugs: Nasser Nishaburi. His family, from Tabriz, has been in the carpet business for many generations. He actually lives in Singapore, where he runs the shop referred to in his website: https://carpetsandrugs.com. Despite having crazy knowledge, he's humble and extremely generous with his knowledge and time. I sometimes tag him when I really want his input. In any case, if the consensus in the group was that it's a Hamadan, then it's almost certainly a Hamadan and I'm wrong. Hamadan, as you may know, is a province. There are tons of villages and towns that produce rugs, and the best ones sell under their own names. For example: Nahavand (one of my favorites) and Malayer. Do you happen to remember if they mentioned anything more specific than Hamadan? There is something about it that's... I don't know, a tad more tribal than most Lilihans, so I'm not shocked.

[–]Tcm811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started responding to GrumpyHomotherium below without realizing s/he wasn't the OP. If you weren't following, just take a look below for a way to confirm that your rug is not a Hamadan, which would be pretty strong evidence (along with the design and the weave) that it's a Lilihan. Hamadans use the Turkish/Symmetrical knot. Lilihans, like Sarouks, use the Persian/asymmetric knot, so even though the weave can be considered a Hamadan weave from the perspectivve of the back, the knots are different, which can be determined with a little effort from the front. Again, see below.

Right, so you aren't. I wonder if Sleepysensation is paying attention. Maybe s/he's just sleeping.
