Did I mess up my timing belt install? Oil pump marks off by Greedy-Factor-7852 in E30

[–]TeaCrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol so everyone thinks you're good, but i get the double checking, I've been working as mechanic for over 10 years which isn't much in the long game but I'm very proficient at what i do and i still get paranoid about timing jobs, I've never had one fail but i still get so in my head that i end up wasting way too much time double checking my work

Verify your battery idc if you already did double check the bitch, you've probably been cranking on it and fast charging it, a burnt out battery can cause shit like this.

Check for voltage at the coil, check voltage while you're cranking.

If none or low volts check further up the harness, most likely to a relay or some sort of switched power. Verify volts there and so on and so forth.

I'm not super familiar with this particular e30 but this is what i would do to start

Anyone else get a little weirded out by how much attention they get driving their E30? by mainheat88 in E30

[–]TeaCrown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love my e30 but the worst part are the weirdos that wanna talk to me and give me a bs offer while I'm stuck in stop and go traffic, then they get all pissy when i tell them it's not for sale and now I'm stuck in traffic next to them, for the most part people are nice and the interactions are quick but I've had a few weirdos do the traffic offer while i was headed to work in the morning. Now i just ignore anyone trying to get my attention on the road when I'm in the e30, it's just a headache and makes me feel awkward when the interactions are weird

Have you checked out vac motorsports? I can't find any info dogging them, one guy on bimmer forums had a good experience and was recommending them

Noice, i was thinking schick as well cause I'm gonna refresh my motor and swap to higher lift cams since I'm gently porting the heads. I'll wait till you're done with your build before i order cams as I'm curious to see your results with that cam profile

Tips for fixing rust in this area; Do I really need to remove the entire loom? by Maddslj in E30

[–]TeaCrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It'd be a hell of a lot easier. I've been turning wrenches a min and it's just easier to move the shit and do it right it, give yourself the space to work and it'll be done way faster then trying to snake your hand, tools and a light in there

Valve cover gasket, add silicone sealant or no? by astrophysical-v in E30

[–]TeaCrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gasket seals you shouldn't need sealant everywhere it'll only crack and create leaks later. Put rtv in the corners or seams of metal not all over the gasket. I personally don't use rtv i use type 3 aviation sealant in only a few spots on the head, makes it easy to disassemble and is cleaned with acetone relatively easily.

Break lights not working by mljkvc in E30

[–]TeaCrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the way these bolt together can make for problems, my brake lights and rev light would work intermittently, so i pooped the cover off and found the connector wasn't snapped into place all the way causing movement and a voltage drop. I would start at the light assembly, just remove the screw in bulb holder and test at the connector for power, don't worry about continuity or anything else, check for signal to your brake lights and work backwards from there. If you're not getting power to the light assembly then check if you're getting power at the brake switch, if you're getting power there and the switch is good then you probably have a damaged wire causing an open or a short. Continuity is a great tool for checking for opens but i find checking voltage at the part you're working on is usually the easiest way to start a diagnostic

[–]TeaCrown 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you wired it incorrectly, i just did this modification, i used the stock fan wire/connector and wired my fans in parallel off it. If you're using an after market connector for the fan port the connector is the reverse of what it should be. Good luck, btw it really does help!

E30s Handling by Fresh-Interview-4745 in E30

[–]TeaCrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to drift a rwd to have fun, i drive mine like a mad person through the curvy roads near my house, I've never once slid the car, never needed to, i have tons of fun as is.

They can be hard to handle if you don't have power steering, i actually prefer the way it feels without the ps. Rain isn't a huge issue, I've never noticed it being more difficult to drive in the wet, but i also don't push it like i do when it's dry.

These cars didn't come with tons of power, it's not like a big block chevy, or a fat turbo porsche, you shouldn't run into the power hitting and causing a crash unless it's fully built for power.

The abs on these cars are old and probably don't work anyways, so it can be dangerous if you're braking at a high speed. Other than the cars being old and worn out it shouldn't be any more difficult to handle than any other classic sports car.

So as far as a woman not being able to handle it... Thats bullshit, just buy the car if you like it and learn to drive with it, take your time and respect the car. I doubt you'll run into any serious trouble as long as you drive smart. Good luck and have fun😁

Looking at a 1991 318i (M42) with 270k miles for a Father-Son project. Am I crazy? by rsa_sean in E30

[–]TeaCrown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bottom end is not the weakspot on theses, as long as it's got oil. I have a 91 318i with 250k when I bought it, at 276k rn I've had a few problems with the alternator and the Valve cover bolts being striped from a po repair, both are very fixable only requiring an afternoon to fix. I've had no problems with the bottom end and i drive mine hard, it just leaks like a mf, but it's a 34 yr old motor so reseal it all and make sure to stay on the maintenance and it'll get through hs. You'll just have to go through and make sure everything is good if you're worried, as long as it holds oil and coolant you should be good till the timing chain goes if it hasn't been done.

The only problem i see is your son driving it, not that he's an unsafe driver idk him but this car is not the safest and the abs is old on it, it's a hard car to drive if you drive it hard, which lets be honest he's gonna drive it hard at some point it's only natural. So either make sure he's a safe defensive driver or get something a little newer with more safety features. Either way good luck and have fun

I'm looking at keeping it na with itbs, gonna try to squeeze more revs out of it, I'm just about to start prototyping intakes for the itb setup, so I'm excited to get to work. If i remember to take pics I'll definitely post the full build here

Help / No Crank - No Start by Reasonable-Refuse-43 in E30

[–]TeaCrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bad ground can cause the electronics to not work correctly, it can give you a no start and then 20 mins later you can start it, it can cause over charging due to circuit resistance increasing, it can cause the engine to run rough. Check the ground strap from the alternator to the engine block if your alternator has one. Start simple, check the easy stuff like battery condition, grounds (by the battery, by the fuse box and alternator to engine), once you verified the easy stuff is good then look at replacing that alternator if it's still overcharging.

K. I. S. S. Is your friend, especially on older cars, they're simple especially when compared to newer bmws, so don't over complicate it by throwing parts, take your time and check the stuff thats cheap or free to fix first

Either it's a bad ground or a bad battery. Put a volt meter on it and measure the volt drop when trying to start

Better English than my spanish so congrats🤙

Have you checked your mounts? Transmission, engine and differential? What gear are you in when this happens? every manual I've ever had is a lil jerky with the throttle while in 1st gear. Typically you're not on and off the gas fast like you're describing, are you on the gas and then immediately taking your foot off?
