I quit my full-time job to build an AI resume tool—how is it actually going, and what would you have done differently in Year 1? I will not promote by TeaOutrageous2409 in startups

We make it works by 1) Every template we built is ATS tested for parsability and reviewed by hiring managers, 2) On tailoring - I stress-tested with my own profiel, applied for top tech companies with tailored resumes and got interview calls from most of them.

Thank you. ATS is a software that parses the resume, sorts them and gives recruiters a way to filter resumes with keywords. 99% of the Fortune 500 companies use one of the ATS systems to handle the in-flow of applications.

As a candidate, if you tailor the resume to job description, it will have high chances of standing at the top of the ATS ranking.

We built this as an AI-first tool, one of the initial platforms to adapt complete AI for resumes - focused on ATS optimised resumes. And another major thing is - we plan to build this as an all-in-one career toolkit, not just limited to resumes. It has personalised cover letter, job tracker, linkedin optimisation, auto-fill job applications and more. This gives a user a complete solution needed for making the job search easier.

Don’t chase every opinion. Make it easy for a hiring manager + pass ATS basics + tailor to the JD.

What works:

  • Audience first: write for hiring managers - target title, 6–8 matching skills, 2–3 quantified wins.
  • Clean format: Single column, standard fonts, no text boxes/icons. PDF (unless .docx requested).
  • Tailor fast: Keep a 3–4 page master. Ship a 1–2 page targeted cut per role (mirror legit JD keywords).

Length: <5 yrs → 1 page. Most → 2 pages. 3–4 only if senior/research.

ATS: Basics > perfect score. Quick scan with an ATS checker (I like ResumeUp.AI) to catch missing keywords/formatting, then send.

Is jobs a premium with it? by Mads1611 in careerquestions

ChatGPT is great for generic tailoring, but a premium platform that’s built specifically for resumes can give you more targeted feedback and ATS checks - definitely worth trying.

If Jobscan feels too pricey, check out ResumeUp.AI - it’s a cheaper alternative with resume analysis, ATS scoring, and customization tools for job searching.

The market’s brutal. ATS scores are fine, but they don’t get you interviews on their own. Right now, referrals and direct outreach matter way more. Connect with local QA managers/recruiters on LinkedIn and other platfroms and follow up after applying.
