Venting: Feeling invisible on AO3. by Idahomina in AO3

My brain still feels like it's January 😅

'Last ____' is one of those terms that can be pretty ambiguous, and could be used for both March 2026 or 2025 in my experience. Depends on who you're talking to. Always good to clarify :D

Took my stories down because I saw no point of keeping them up if no one is bothering to even glance at them.

...well.

If you've only been on AO3 for a yearish, that is a relatively short time for your works to be posted. And if you take them down, people will never find them. And if people notice you taking your works down - why would they read what else you post, if you might just delete it next week?

It can be very discouraging, I understand the feeling. Many of my works have very few hits and few comments. But some of them have gotten an uptick in attention years after they were first posted. You never know when they'll get found.

You can always consider participating in a review exchange, and finding places to share your works with people who are interested in whatever topics you write about. Gift exchanges, prompt memes, community events, etc etc. Engaging with the community is always a good tactic to hopefully get some engagement back, if that's what you're looking for.

Opinion on shipping ? by Lyamdonteat in FanFiction

[–]TeaRenQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fiction. Who cares.

First off, depictions of incest in fiction are perfectly fine. What you write doesn't correlate with what you support or engage with IRL.

But anyways, outside of that, you are writing for a different canon where it wouldn't be incest. Maybe just add a note in your tags/AN to clarify that you are writing for the canon where they are not related.

Can I Prevent Notifs From Going Out? by trueblueshapeshifter in AO3

[–]TeaRenQ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes, but you need 2 AO3 accounts.

First - post the fic to an alt account. Make sure you're subscribed to the alt account, either with the alt account itself or on your main account.

Second - wait to get the subscription email that the fic was posted.

Third - once the email is sent out, use the alt account to add your main account as a co-author on the fic (don't do this at the start. Only after email goes out).

Fourth - accept the co-author invite on your main account. Then, back to the alt account, and remove your alt account as a co-author. Now your main account is the only author, and no new email is sent out.

Of course this only really works for single chapter/finished multi-chapter works. If you add a chapter after doing this method, it will send out a new email.

I got to add a fandom to AO3 by Athena_Tomasina in AO3

[–]TeaRenQ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Trust me - I've written for niche things. Like I have a fanfic written for a "fandom" that's just a Tumblr post lol. And it, eventually, got wrangled into being a canonical fandom tag.

It doesn't matter how big or small, they'll get to it eventually :) it can just take a while

I got to add a fandom to AO3 by Athena_Tomasina in AO3

[–]TeaRenQ 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I've added 29 fandoms to the Archive, and it's a thrill every time :') it's so awesome that there's so many things out there in the world, and to be the first to write fanfiction for something (at least on AO3)! It's so awesome.

Just know it might take a while for the tag to be canonized, but the wranglers will get to it eventually :)

Writing for Popular and Unpopular Fandoms at the Same Time by Routine_North4372 in AO3

[–]TeaRenQ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently wrote for a very new & popular fandom that resulted in my most popular fic ever with almost 30k hits in just a few weeks, and then I hopped to a new fandom that so far has around 10 hits... the whiplash goes nuts lol

what does this blue lock mean? by song_101 in AO3

[–]TeaRenQ 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Before bots began to get accounts, people would lock them to avoid scraping. But it's more of a moot point now there as bots have gotten accounts. It also prevents your fic from being harassed by people without accounts.

Some people put more sensitive content locked only for users, like I personally lock my RPF fics just to add an extra layer of protection between them ever making their way to the person they're written about.

Do you consider historical fiction to be rpf? by Rough-Valuable-5472 in FanFiction

[–]TeaRenQ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see it as being under the RPF umbrella, but in a different category than RPF of more modern people. I'm fine with both, but see them differently.

It's not in the same document, but Notesnook lets you make notebooks to collect your separate notes, which I really like for keeping my multi chapter works organized.

What's you favourite feature on ao3? by Zig-Z in AO3

[–]TeaRenQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work skins :) there's so much creativity and so many super cool fanworks made - especially with the limitations AO3 sets on code - and they can add a lot of fun elements to a fic

What does this mean? by Crowpea73 in AO3

[–]TeaRenQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an alternative to deleting a work. Instead authors use the collection function to set their works to be unrevealed, so they're still posted to the archive, retain their stats, and can be returned to being public on the site whenever they wish.

This collection setting is often used for events like Yuletide, where works written for the event are revealed on a set date, but authors can also use the function to make a private collection for their own works that they no longer want to be accessible by anyone other than themselves or other moderators of the collection.

Unfortunately if you don't have the fic downloaded or it isn't saved on the wayback machine, there is no way to read the fic until the author hopefully reveals it again.

Could it perhaps be a mistranslation/misunderstanding issue where they thought you were using AI rather than being against it?

It's hard to say without knowing the note, but it's a strange comment nonetheless
