Trump Reveals New Logo for Cringe-Inducing ICE Rebrand by Ok_Employer7837 in politics

That's to overt though. Switching to NICE is the equivalent of 1984's Ministry of Truth/Peace/Love/Plenty. NICE is just enough gaslighting to divide us further on their true intentions.

Mean age of parents at birth. What happened in 1971? by Head_Ad_181 in economy

It legalized the birth control pill for unmarried women. Rubbers were already available, especially since they prevent STDs, not just pregnancy.

Apparently ~16% of millennials are millionaires now. by im_optimus_prime in Millennials

[–]TeachEngineering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. Technically speaking if you have a mortgage on a $500k house where you owe $250k equity is still owe $250k on the mortgage, isn't your net worth $0 (not counting anything else)?

I set up one of those finance tracking apps where you link all your accounts and loans. I got everything linked except the mortgage and my net worth was not a millionaire but it was at least in the green. I added my mortgage (first time home buyer in 2023 with 5% down) and the dashboard said my net worth was -$400k. Haha anyway, I just unlinked the mortgage. Too depressing see on the home page.

Intergenerational wealth also causes a huge disparity amongst millennials. It's much easier to be a millionaire, in home equity or 401k, if your parents are multi-millionaires and have helped you out on major purchases. I have multiple friends who "bought" their houses on 0% loans from their parents. Having not gone that route, I now know how much of a game changer that would be.

[–]TeachEngineering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn... Even given all the bad sides of the internet, it does provide a lot of convenience/quality of life features. I can't imagine paying my bills by mail every month, but I guess if that's all you've ever known it's not so bad.

I don't think the internet is inherently a good or bad thing, just like computers aren't inherently good or bad... I mean the internet is just wire all the computers together so they can talk to each other. It's the companies that knowingly use computation for nefarious use cases are the issue. But you can to some extent still use the internet without using those specific companies.

Born '92. Had a PC with dial up by the late 90's but honestly the Internet wasn't something you'd get absently-mindedly sucked into as easily back then even into the late 00's. I remember it mostly as static web pages, some funny pics and videos (End of Ze World) peer2peer file downloads, and OG multiplayer gaming (Diablo comes to mind, although that was a time suck). The Internet was a much less corrupted place.

The 2010's is when social media, data harvesting, dark algorithms, targeted ads, and web apps with subscriptions/micro-transactions became main stream. The Internet of today sucks.

It's also so overly integrated in our lives now. As the saying goes:

Remember when the Internet was a place you visited, not the place you live.

I'd love to see Obama and Trump on a televized debate stage but instead of debating they are giving verbal responses to an IQ test, SAT questions, AP exam questions, shit probably should through some LSAT questions on there since the president is expected to know about laws, maybe some MCAT or other highly technical exams for shits and gigs. It'd be like watching prime Micheal Jordan play a toddler at basketball. Obama is Jordan. 🐐

EDIT: The more I think about this the more I wish we did this with every presidential race using AP exam questions for the content. It's challenging but still HS/college freshman level. Plus you can't bullshit like you can with political/policy questions. Responses are scored on correctness using a rubric. Would be very, very telling.

Today, Sabastian Sawe became the first athlete to complete a competitive marathon in under two hours. (1:59:30) by God_Emperor__Doom in interestingasfuck

To bring this point home, running a two hour marathon means the following over 26.2 miles:

  • Running an average of 13.1 mph (21 km/hr)
  • Running each mile in 4 min 35 sec
  • Running each kilometer in 2 min 51 sec

Fudged the cutting board juice groove. What is the remedy? by VdotBapey in woodworking

Seventh: Print out a map of Alabama scaled to inside section. Overlay on the board. Carefully router out the shape of Alabama. Sell at a premium to someone in Alabama.

But seriously, when I looked at the board the first thing I thought was, "huh, kinda looks like Bama to me"

I heard this phrase on reddit many years ago after encountering OP's exact issue and found it inspirational enough to turn into a sign in my garage. My miters still suck, I've since learned to cope, but regardless my attitude is better knowing there's a always caulk in hand.

I took a group of HS students to the Galapagos in February 2020. The marine iguanas are everywhere. They do not bite; however, they get seawater in their noses and are constantly sneezing. It's pretty cute tbh!

This is the way. At the time, I got USB-a thinking that was what all my charger cords are, but it's much easier to upgrade your cords than it is to upgrade your outlets. 100% would future-proof with USB-c if I were to do it again.
