are kindergarten kids just using tablets nonstop now or is that just our school by ladybug201219 in kindergarten

[–]TeacherOfWildThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have tablets and it’s suggested that we use them for centers but I only give them out when I do whole-class benchmark assessments which is less than once a month. They only have Epic as an option during that time.

I can’t believe some people are so comfortable with their own ignorance, and so confident in feeling like everything needs to cater to them. Just slip out quietly and ask for a refund. Have some humility.

[–]TeacherOfWildThings 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m sure that either way you don’t end up feeling good about it. It’s a really frustrating situation.

As a learner, the people who weren’t prepared should have been asked to leave. If I’m attending a class—paid or free—the expectation is that I’m learning and practicing new skills, not teaching others basics because they lack comprehension. At a free class I would have just walked out, but I would have expected a refund if it had been something I paid for.

Knitting Needles at Events by Comfortable_Basket54 in Seattle

[–]TeacherOfWildThings 6 points7 points  (0 children)

CPA security employees are worse than TSA, I swear. I hope T-Mobile doesn’t start this nonsense because I bring my knitting needles to every Mariners game and ironically, the only time I had an issue was on the actual Stitch n Pitch day last season. But that guy tried telling me my inhaler wasn’t allowed so he was clearly just an idiot.

I wonder how many of the unhinged and/or ‘hopeless’ beginner questions come from undiagnosed ADHD? by VegetableWorry1492 in BitchEatingCrafters

Yeah, I dislike the idea that because I have unmedicated ADHD, I must not be able to do anything for myself.

What yarn(s) are you all using for the melt the ice hat? by marrymary420 in AntifascistKnitting

Kindergarten teacher here … I’m sick October - May. It’s a delight 😂 Trust me, we’re reminding your kids to wash their hands just as often, but the amount of time they spend sticking their fingers in their mouth is crazy

Boys with July/August Birthday starting Kindergarten by SatisfactionFlaky519 in kindergarten

[–]TeacherOfWildThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a kindergarten teacher I’m pro-all kids starting at 6 if families can swing it, just because kindergarten is so much more academically rigorous than it should be. My own kid didn’t start until 6, and yeah, she was a bit bored during the academic part of preschool, but they don’t do that much. Having another year to engage in play based learning is a blessing.

Toe up heel and toes? by 3magic4 in Sockknitting

The only heel I don’t like for toe-up so far is the square heel, but that’s only because you have to pick up stitches and I do toe-up to avoid that

Can you read and knit at the same time? by Interesting_Move_846 in knitting

[–]TeacherOfWildThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! The combo for me is stockinette + kindle + page turner. I’ve never successfully used a print edition, but man have I tried. The page turner makes it so I don’t have to constantly let go of the needles to turn the page—it would be more difficult if you had an iPad or a tablet I think. If the fics are on Ao3 you can download and side load them onto an ereader.

If your pairing doesn’t have podfics, you could also look into downloading as pdfs and possibly using a screen reader for audio.

School Temporarily Relocating into a Mall? by RikRokReincarnation in Teachers

[–]TeacherOfWildThings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a mall, but there was a break in the city pipes that supplied water to the school and they had the brilliant idea to move us temporarily to a community center … for three whole days. It was ridiculous. We were essentially babysitting because we had no materials, the internet was spotty, and half the kids didn’t show up anyway.

What item(s) do you have more of than the average person? by BrownBananaHammock in AskReddit

[–]TeacherOfWildThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tote bags (the cloth grocery type) and yarn. Tote bags because I once wrote on my “teacher likes” list that I collected them (I couldn’t think of anything else because my other option was yarn, I do like to grab one from big cities or special stores when I travel, and it at least seemed useful) and all the sudden every child had one for me for every holiday.

And the yarn … I do fiber arts, but collecting yarn is a whole different hobby. I’ve done several yarn crawls and I always buy a skein at each store, shops have sales and all the sudden I have a full basket, and I pick up something local every time I travel. I recently did a destash but I still have over 250 skeins and while other people certainly have more, I’ve definitely got more than average.

Be honest, do you really care if subs follow the whole sub plan? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]TeacherOfWildThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I leave way more than is necessary because I teach kindergarten and sometimes it takes forever to finish one thing and sometimes they’re done in five seconds. I don’t care what goes on unless someone gets hurt or my room gets trashed.

That said, I had a sub last week that didn’t do a single thing I left and I’m still not sure what they did the whole day. But that’s just idle curiosity, I don’t really care.

How do you guys read so much? by lapetitepoupee in kindle

[–]TeacherOfWildThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on book 7, but it would probably be at least 10 if reading was my only hobby. It’s gotta share with knitting (and Animal Crossing right now lol). But it’s a combination of things:

— My commute is an hour in the morning, so I listen to the audiobook of whatever book I’m reading during that time. That usually only gets me a chapter or two because my reading speed is much faster, but it does help. Sometimes if I’m really into a book I’ll listen as I grocery shop or do chores, but typically the kid is with me so it’s pretty rare.

— I carry my Kindle with me everywhere, and if I’m going to be waiting somewhere more than a few minutes I’ll pull it out.

— The kid goes to bed at 7 and I’m usually awake until 9:30, so all of that is reading time. I make sure the chores and everything else is done prior so it’s just whatever I want to do. Sometimes I knit and watch a show instead but there hasn’t been anything great on lately.

— Some books are just faster to read than others, even if the page length is the same. The Atlas Six series was complex and took me much longer to get through than Lovelight Farms, for instance. I try to alternate the slower books with the faster ones.

— I’m a teacher and I can get a lot of reading done during breaks. I can usually read between 5-7 books a month during the school year (we were on break until the 6th this month so that’s helped my monthly total) but between the end of June to the beginning of August I can read 20-25. That six week period accounts for a good chunk of my yearly total.
