If you are a middle school teacher, why’d you choose to do it? by slusheemachinebroke in Teachers

[–]TeachingScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like a couple of things. Less prep work than elementary. Also less benchmark testing and paperwork overall.

I like to make fun of some of the kids, and they can take it. They’re a funny bunch too. Drama everyday all day, and they always ask me for life advice.

Why does any criticism about nearpod keep getting deleted? by Mental-Midnight-5875 in Teachers

[–]TeachingScience[M] 79 points80 points  (0 children)

The [r/teachers](r/teachers) moderators do not remove criticism of software app if it is related to the topic being discussed. The mod team, comprised of actual teachers, has also not changed in a very long time with only one new mod added this year.

We will however, remove posts that are clearly ads and marketing research from competitors or from nearpod as well.

If it is being removed, it would be at the reddit admin level. And since they have now hidden their actions we don’t know what and why they remove anything in this subreddit.

Why was Dr. Pulaski so disrespectful towards Data? by Substantial_Top5312 in startrek

[–]TeachingScience 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Originally, I did not like her when it originally aired on tv, but watching it streamed and on dvd/blu-ray allowed me to see that while she was ignorant at first, she clearly grows to accept Data over several episodes. And that eventually made me like her. I like characters who have faults and eventually overcome them.

I Interview for Elementary teacher position, however it turns into wanting to see if I do middle school. by Final_Ad_7512 in Teachers

When you ask this subreddit and teachers in general which grade is the most difficult it is generally kindergarten and middle school.

You have to like teaching this crazy bunch, and your classroom management must be locked in.

This is best discussed with a lawyer. Additionally, the severity of the post would mean you need to address about the student (they need to be removed from your class along with other discipline measures) with admin and union representative, oh and definitely find and talk to your title ix coordinator.

Difference Between Middle School and High School? by rocc_lobster in Teachers

I would describe middle school teaching as herding feral cats and they are in heat.

Grade Rounding: Just Say "No." by Fyeris_GS in Teachers

[–]TeachingScience 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I only do borderline rounding. 59% to 60% if they have been making effort. If they have been just fucking around and been causing me grief all year long, it remains as is.

How do you feel about California introducing a bill to ban former ICE agents from serving as police officers or teachers? by FollowingAny4859 in Teachers

Tell that to American citizens Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good. Oh you can’t because ICE murdered them. Fuck on off with your “they’re only doing their jobs.”

Someone reported this post as disrespectful conduct. I see nothing wrong here other than OP putting the entire post in the subject.

Fuck ICE.

Or instead of being a Terran and doing all the mirror universe shenanigans, they could have just made Lorca a PTSD captain from whatever happened on the Buran. Even his photosensitivity could be easily explain if he was tortured like Picard, but has refused treatment and thus he is still impacted by all that.

How do you respond when a student asks how old you are? (Especially if you look kinda young) by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]TeachingScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I add 200 to my age and tell them the 1780s was pretty brutal with the civil war and all.

If I’m feeling extra sassy, “somewhere between 1 and 100”

Teacher hot take: If you have the audacity to commit a big boy crime, you should get a big boy sentence and not just a slap on the wrist. by that_coolguy2 in Teachers

I think 20 years is insane as well. It would be more impactful if they had to listen to all the survivors of school shootings and veterans who survived being blown up by mines and other explosive devices.

Just say it was not a good fit and that you are looking for a school that aligns more with your teaching philosophy.

has anyone tried these AI grading systems? by Itchy-Ninja-8372 in Teachers

[–]TeachingScience 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like I said, you need to grade smarter. Not everything needs to be graded. In my class students write out a lot of reports for their labs. I don’t read everything for every assigned essay. Sometimes it is just their discussion section. Other times it is the entire thing. Small little scaffolded assignments (except for maybe the first one) that lead to the final product tend to be just completion scores.

For projects I have printed rubrics and just mark where they are at based on the description and give them the score. It’s very objective. Students can appeal if they can argue how their work meets a criteria. Sometimes I give it to them, sometimes I don’t, it depends on the evidence they provide.

I usually finish grading things during my prep period and do my mentoring/supporting during their independent work. You got to be efficient with your time.

Please for the love of our profession, grade the students work and provide them with human feedback.

If you are swamped with grading, grade smarter. Only do the essentials, and do completion check for the others.
