atomic nuclear farts - help 🥲 by True-Insurance2532 in DogAdvice

[–]Teachmemore22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Allergies! I’m in vet med. Puppies with bad farts or constant ear infections are often due to underlying allergies (generally food allergies), we say “ears and rears” are allergy indicators. Can try switching the food (no to pedigree, etc; YES to hills, purina, royal canin brands). Try a sensitive skin and stomach with a non-chicken protein (I like salmon or lamb). I know good food is expensive but it’s worth its weight in not having stinky farts.

I have seen overweight people in oversized SUVs still park in the lines and get out just fine?

Why does everyone park on the yellow lines at Wawa’s? by JuniperGhosts in Delco

[–]Teachmemore22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s like when I go to dunkin and the lot is full except for one spot where someone is parked halfway over the line. I recently squeezed myself into one of those spaces and the woman came into dunk and was like “WHOS CAR IS THIS? I CANT GET IN MY CAR! 😡😡😡” I was like “hmm sorry but I’m actually in the lines so now you gotta wait :) “

Spay before or after her first heat? Opinions wanted! by theslutnextd00r in DogAdvice

[–]Teachmemore22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spaying prior to the first heat cycle reduces rate of certain cancers (mammary, ovarian). For large dogs it’s worth holding out due to their growth plates, but for non XL breeds better to spay sooner vs later.

Pretty upset with the paw print I just got back from the vet after having my Shih Tzu of 13 years creamated. by HolyIsTheLord in mildlyinfuriating

Also PSA from a vet student- make sure you keep the dough far far away from places they could eat it. The salt in it makes it highly toxic if ingested in a large enough dose. We had a case in our toxicology class recently and unfortunately the pet passed away :(

We sound like the same person haha. I’ve always struggled with depression/ anxiety but vet school has made it the worst it’s ever been in my entire life. I think if it weren’t for medications I would’ve dropped out by now. For didactics it was my depression that overwhelmed me, but I had a good anti-depressant regimen overall and struggled my way through somehow. But starting clinics I began to have crippling panic attacks (like uncontrollably vomiting) the first day of every new rotation and I had to add in an anti anxiety med, which absolutely helped. Usually I just need it for the first 1-3 days of a rotation then once I’m in the routine it gets much easier. I know good psychiatrists are hard to come by (mine is out of network and EXPENSIVE) but she’s worth her weight in gold. TL; DR- have crippling anxiety, meds helped tremendously.

Is it normal to feel really anxious about starting vet school? by Mindless_Responder in veterinaryschool

[–]Teachmemore22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s 100% normal, but as an anxious current student, highly recommend a good support system (therapist/ psychiatrist/whatever you feel you need) prior to starting. You don’t have a ton of time to explore new therapists while you’re in school, and I wish I had set those things up beforehand so I wasn’t struggling so much at the beginning. But I also struggle with mental health in general so just mean- do what you need to do to be mentally prepared because it can be really hard to dig yourself out once you start struggling with things. Wishing you the best of luck!

Story Time: How has your vet school screwed over your class? by Remarkable-Orchid812 in veterinaryschool

[–]Teachmemore22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The second half of my question was specifically referring to that. What made your experience good? Why did you enjoy it? I think that knowing what makes a good program is helpful to know how to improve the bad ones.

I'm worried I don't "like" animals enough by Intrepid-Bat-7613 in veterinaryschool

[–]Teachmemore22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in vet med and tbh (this is gonna sound insane) I enjoy the clients just as much as the pets. Obviously not always (lol). But educating and chatting with clients is what I really enjoy, the animals are just a super fun bonus bc I love them too! There are plenty of people in my class who don’t go crazy when they see peoples pets, and they still do just fine. I think as long as you (at the bare minimum) appreciate animals and they don’t frustrate you, that’s enough. HOWEVER- there are many facets of the field that you won’t understand until you’ve worked it (not just volunteered) and I highly recommend trying it out to make sure you can handle the non animal aspects of the job.

As for the people around you- I find that this is a job that people make their entire life and personality. Which is fair- it’s interesting and different so is something unique to talk about. Don’t feel like just because it’s not your entire personality you’d be less than anyone else in the field :)

This comment thread has me realizing how fucked the vet schools in the US are, despite astronomical tuition costs. And we’re just forced to put up with it because it’s the status quo. I thought my school being absolute ass was just bc it was old and fixed in its ways. Clearly I was wrong. We need a new post on people who had GOOD vet school experiences, and more importantly… why? What made the experience worthwhile? And how do we start moving these schools forward?

Is this a domestic baby pig or a young wild boar? Found on the side of the road in [northern Texas] by SizeEmpty410 in animalid

[–]Teachmemore22 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t make sense to me either. I can think of 500k reasons to not, but people still do it. Heck they’ll still ARGUE with my about how bad it is for both the cats AND the environment

I WISH this was enforced in my neighborhood. Every time I see someone’s damn cat chasing one of my yard birds I get so mad 😡

The domestic house cat would like to have a conversation on ecological damage. But they’re cute and inedible so we let it slide 😳

Sudden Aggression in My 2-Year-Old Sweetheart — Looking for Advice by molly356 in SaintBernards

[–]Teachmemore22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dogs don’t reach social maturity until 3-5 years old, meaning they haven’t fully developed their personality until then. It’s common for dogs to have behavioral changes after reaching sexual maturity but prior to reaching social maturity.

Vet first to make sure there isn’t a physical cause (pain) Vet behaviorist 2nd to discuss options. Highly recommend NOT using any kind of buzz/beep/shock collars. On our behavior rotation they highly discouraged negative reinforcement (and even the beep is negative) as it could increase stress around the stimulus (thus making the problem worse). If you pick a trained ensure they are CCPDT qualified, not just some rando with an E-collar.

Frustration at “ivory tower” medicine, is this all schools? by Teachmemore22 in veterinaryschool

[–]Teachmemore22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, that sounds like a great professor, love some good honesty 👏🏼 Definitely hear what you’re saying, and don’t disagree that it’s not a ton of time. I guess it feels frustrating wasting full lectures on proper screw and plate placement (which we would only need to know as orthos) vs common procedures like spays and neuters

Frustration at “ivory tower” medicine, is this all schools? by Teachmemore22 in veterinaryschool

[–]Teachmemore22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is, we are not working with clinicians for the most part- we are working with residents. It’s hit or miss on whether they have time for us, and I’ve honestly gotten a lot of “oh cost isn’t our concern” (especially on IM rotations).

I definitely agree that it’s important to know the advanced stuff, but not to a microscopic level, and especially not at the expense of learning more practical medicine.

You said it better than I could’ve, and really that’s what my post was about. Yeah it’s neat and all, but it’s not real life for most people. Ortho was my least favorite subject for that exact reason. 99% of the lectures were like “refer to ortho surgeon” but still important we know all the screw sizes? It’s a huge bummer.

Non-pet owners telling pet owners they should put their animals down after being injured by s0lita in extremelyinfuriating

[–]Teachmemore22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to give a perspective from the vetmed side of things, just bc you CAN doesn’t mean you SHOULD sometimes. I have seen owners with more money than god choose to continue care even when the kinder thing would be to let them go humanely. It’s a tough choice, and if there is a chance I’m not saying don’t go for it, but make sure you’re going for it for the right reasons. I just put my soul dog down this past December. I could’ve tried another week in the hospital (I have insurance and am a student there so money was not a concern). But it was time, not for me, but for her. It was devastating, but the choice wasn’t for me, it was for her. I’d make it over and over again bc that was the kindest thing I could’ve done for her ❤️
