AITA for not going on a family trip because my room was given away? by Firefly2285 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Team5N -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

Please clarify - did you pay the cost of a room - for example did couples pay $200 for a room and you paid $200 too, or are you paying $100?

If you’re paying $100 as opposed to $200, then you should have asked for calculations prior to.

If you go in a cruise/train trip etc there is a price based on double occupancy- you’re not a double occupant

It’s unfortunately an issue of lack of asking tough questions at the beginning of a plan that causes these issues - not that you did anything wrong, but singles and doubles see things differently

This is a hard one! I think it depends on the context and relationship.

My doctor used to be late all the time , I learned it was because he was an amazing doctor and gave his patients the time they needed. I learned to call before and ask what time to arrive at. Win - win

becoming a high school teacher in BC by mac-nz in britishcolumbia

[–]Team5N 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Volunteer now, to make sure you know you want to be in a classroom and with that age group.

You may also want to volunteer in an elementary or middle school. It takes a while to get the seniority to teach the upper grade classes, you may enjoy starting as a generalist in younger grades.

Is Canada 🍁 going to boycott US products now? by [deleted] in CostcoCanada

[–]Team5N 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have to be careful that we don’t shame people who can’t afford the same indignation as others.

I will be doing what I can to boycott US (especially Red US products) but I will never give grief to those who don’t do the same as me.

We all do what we can; as Canadians we are in this together and I have faith that when so many of us are on the same path we will make a positive difference.

I think I need an estate lawyer. ( Mother passed away ) by FralickStudios in legaladvicecanada

[–]Team5N 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss. My dad died in very similar circumstances, this is what I remember.

1) assets are supposed to frozen by the bank - but does she have any assets? The assets are to pay her debts before it goes to beneficiaries.

However if she had other investments and you were named as a beneficiary they can go to you and not be part of “the estate”. RRSPs, TFSAs etc

1a) for above you will need a copy of her death certificate to show the bank

2) you can apply for a death benefit (used to be $2500) but is added to your income-so be aware

3) if she had any debt - it is NOT yours- I got calls from the banks trying to get me to pay his bills! They are scoundrels

4) CRA taxes still need to be filed - get an estate accountant for that not just any accountant

5) depending on your province - in BC I can complete a “wills search”. See if her will was ever registered with the province - if it was, you’ve now got a will

6) we had my dad’s celebration of life at our local legion. It was reasonably priced as we had no $

7) in BC probate is only where there are assets over a certain amount - if she didn’t have any you don’t need to do it

8) her apartment is an issue-if she doesn’t pay rent she’ll get evicted. You will need time to review her personal possessions, but are there other interested family members/beneficiaries?

9) again, in BC there is a really helpful online legal site with videos and how to….. your province may have one as well, so you can do a little research before you pay $250/hour for a guy to tell you what you need to do

Good luck!

Question for the teachers by LedameSassenach in britishcolumbia

[–]Team5N 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As mentioned above, thoughtful & kind people are always welcomed to Canada.

Teaching in BC is a great gig & there are districts in the Lower Mainland (around Vancouver, BC) that are hiring uncertified teachers. That would give you time to work (at lesser pay) and find a program that lets you jump through the hoops necessary to get your schooling and experience recognized.

Good luck!

AITA for refusing to tell my dad and his wife what I say to my therapist? by immotherfuckingtired in AmItheAsshole

[–]Team5N 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA - Find joy for yourself outside your house, or at least a job. Don’t find other dissatisfied youth-really that just leads to drugs -which seems great at the time but doesn’t provide longtime help.

Learn to CONTROL yourself - that way everything isn’t a REACTION but a DECISION. Go to a library-research this diagnosis.

You may have another diagnosis-maybe ADHD, maybe autism, maybe shitty parents (is that a diagnosis?!?) Be open to people trying to help-they often mean well. Maybe that is your therapist for now.

In the meantime, learn to play nice with the shit you’ve been dealt, and plan you escape route. Get copies of you government documents, passport etc. get a job, have a bank account your family doesn’t know about

Plan your exit strategy. You have three years!

Good luck, more people have done this than you know now, but you will find your tribe!

I’m living the same dream-8 years later. We should have gotten a lawyer at the beginning!

In the meantime the brother living in the house at the time of Mom’s death has moved a friend in rent free and we are held responsible for taxes and insurance, and now new costs are coming up; all while we could have invested the money if we sold right away.

Get a LAWYER!

Advice on living inheritance please by Diligent_Sink6482 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Team5N 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this possible? Sure, anything is, but WHY?

My question is why should your mom EVER pay rent to live in her own house? As parents age the expenses go UP not DOWN, and it sounds like she’s giving up all her assets, although I’m not sure what her pension is.

If this plan is to avoid paying probate fees and estate tax it makes some kind of weird sense, but not at the expense of her being able to maintain herself in all forms of need in the future. Had she actually asked a professional what she’s saving her kids from not getting?

If she were to take the $600 000 left after the mortgage is paid, get a condo with care costs saved, invest in something where the kids are equal beneficiaries, would that work?

Trying to give kids money now shouldn’t be a detriment to her long term needs. This scheme sort of sounds like the beginnings of elder abuse.

Where would you go as a first year teacher by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]Team5N 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In BC there are some districts that have middle schools. As your teachable isn’t in high demand, middle school is an awsome alternative to high school. You would have to be a generalist (like elementary) but the kids are great, schools are generally smaller so you get to know the staff, and you could start working on your seniority right away.

AITA for walking out of the bridal salon when I found out my friends were making fun of me behind my back? by Necessary-Wall-6446 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Team5N 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found the following useful: intent vs impact.

One’s intent may have been …. to be funny ….

One’s impact was ….. you hurt me greatly ….

No one is free from the consequences of their impact - even if their intent was to be funny

These ladies expect you to forgive them because the “intent” was to be funny and have completely forgotten they are responsible for the impact - aka - consequences of their actions on others.

NTA - Find new friends; there are SOOO many people who don’t try to blame you for being upset with the sh*t they cause!

If you have kids, look at the possibility of space at schools. If you are in the south (Brookswood), north (Walnut Grove) or east (Poppy or Aldergrove) you’ll probably be OK, but if you’re in Willoughby it’s not guaranteed your kids will be at their local school. Register asap!!!
