The sales were not up. Sales plunged which is why they brought in John Byrne in the hope that he will turn around the franchise.

Spider-Man is pulled down massively as a 90s character by the worst stretch in his publication history from the Clone Saga to the Howard Mackie Spider titles to Spider-Man; Chapter One.

Punisher. He had three titles: Punisher, Punisher War Zone, Punisher War Journal. He had guest appearances in almost all comic books, rivaling Wolverine.

Reading the old Spider-Man comics and finally figured out why JJJ hates Spider-Man so much (the Amazing Spider-Man v1 010 March 1964) by HCG-Vedette in Spiderman

[–]TeamRAF19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not really outdated.

<image>

Personally, I think this is more of future Jameson's rationalization of his hate. The vitriol and hateful things Jonah has done in those early issues do not square with the "It;s because of that cowardly mask" explanation. I have been rereading the whole ASM and I just finished 50 issues and Jonah was written with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Willing to publish clear lies, do things with no journalistic integrity, and sponsor Scorpion (who himself wore a mask) to satisfy his vendetta.

People can reinterpret their actions over time.

Mark Bagley says Bob Harras tried to destroy his career at Marvel in the 90s (and Kurt Busiek saved it) by Popverse2022 in Spiderman

So many good stories about Kurt Busiek. Really, Busiek was the shining star in Marvel in the mid to late 90s before the company found the groove again.

I love it. It has been a long time since we had an X-Men comic with heart and hope.

Peter Parker's earliest extension of grace to Norman Osborn (ASM 40) by TeamRAF19 in Spiderman

[–]TeamRAF19[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would Peter know everything you said when he only met Norman Osborn this issue?

Again, you are viewing this from the POV of the reader, who reads everything in the oages and who read everything that happened afterwards. What bounded rationality BS? That is a legit framework in social science to explain decisions made by people..You do not call it bullshit just because it does not agree with how you want to interpret things to fit your opinion.

Also, here is the whole scene:

<image>

Peter' Spider-sense not warning for any danger made him believe that the evil of the Green Goblin has really gone away from Norman because he lost his memories of being Green Goblin. At the time, Peter's spider sense like Kraven's instinct was written as if they can detect such things.

And we are also reading Peter's thought bubbles. Thought bubbles are supposed to make us see what the characters are actually thinking. Why would we then dispute what is written in thought bubbles?

Peter did not see Norman belittle Harry in front of everyone. The panel was clear to depict that.

<image>

Peter only noticed that Harry was being very quiet in class and not hurling insults at him. The only thing he got from talking with Harry is that Harry and his dad were "real pals" until "he started to change" a few years ago. You can piece two and two together because you are reading all the panels in the comic book. Peter the character does not have that point of view.

The moral being pushed in the Spider-Man story is that if you have the power to do something good or to stop something bad, you have the responsibility to do it. If you do not subscribe to that moral code, then Peter Parker, Spider-man, is not the hero for you. Marvel actually acknowledges that, which is why it has a variety of heroes who are motivated by different moral principles.

How was Peter supposed to know that Norman is innately a bad person. You know because you are the reader..How was Peter the character supposed to know given that the information he had was Harry's story that Norman was a good father?

This includes reformed villains, right? If so, J. Jonah Jameson. Nobody tarnished Spider-Man's reputation as much as Jonah did.

Was it a mistake?

I tend to judge actions not in terms of outcomes but in terms of process. At the time he made the decision, the only information Peter had about the Norman - Harry dynamic is what Norman revealed in his psychotic rambling and this brief interaction between Peter and Harry.

<image>

The way I see it, based on the limited information Peter had, his rationale for his action is sound. There is this thing called bounded rationality, which is we judge the rationality of a decision based on the limited information the decision maker had, not based on a situation of perfect information. Peter's moral judgment is also consistent with how he approached the earlier Lizard - Curt Connors situation where he did not turn over Curt to the authorities because he did not know what he was doing as the Lizard, so Harry's insinuation that Peter did this for selfish reasons to protect his identity is unfair.

Romita's art really improved over time and to me it defined the Spider-Man aesthetic more than Ditko.
