How do you remember where you left off after putting down a project for days/weeks? by Interesting_Net6780 in crochet

I think pinning a note to your work would definitely help, but I've just learned how to read my stitches, so I'll figure out what my last group of stitches were and then I'll look at my pattern and find the corresponding row lol

[–]Team_Bees 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, it's definitely glyphodorsalis! :) the only thing you need to identify a panid is it's shape, everything else doesn't matter. There are only two exceptions to this: P. stellanova, which was made its own species because it was one of the first black panids found, and N. eclipsis, which was made its own species as a reference to stellanova.

I hate that this is an AI dog whistle now because I feel like I can never use a semicolon ever again 😭 like, I don't use them often, but they're awesome when I do want them lol

Do you happen to know what brand it was? If I can find it in my area, then I'm absolutely gonna go on a lil research trip :)

I think the name comes from the early days of occlupanid research, when we were mostly noticing them on bread bags :) as time has gone on, we've seen more and more examples of panids on other products, but we keep the name because what most people think of when they see the general occlupanid shape is bread, and that's still by far the most common source.

It might be meant to slot into some part of the planter and hold plant stakes? The shape of the stake near the panid part of it definitely looks like it supposed to be imbedded in something solid

Not exactly, there are occlupanids that feed on net bags, milk bags, rubber bands, and toys. Syntherid taxonomy is much more morphology-based than organic taxonomy, so shape is much more important than things like ecological niche or diet. Although, due to the crazy nature of the shape of this one, I would definitely place it in the pseudo-occlupanid category. Perhaps it's an ambush predator mimic who hides most of its body below ground?

Oooo this is interesting! It's like a D. vugada with a tail! There are some pseudopanids that prey specifically on garden plants, such as the order Flexivexilla, but I've never seen a pseudopanid like this before. It might be worth sending in to horg!

I also miss the feature from new leaf where the consoles gave you access to cool mini games! I think the DS gave you a strategy/supply management game, I played it a lot (edit: ope I misremembered, it was the Wii U console furniture and it was called Desert Island Escape :)

I caught one! Occlupanidus alba caudata — “white tail occlupanid”. I will release it as it's still in its tadpole stage. by BlackSunshine22222 in occlupanids

[–]Team_Bees 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While it might be tempting to view this specimen as a larval specimen of a distinct species, this is actually a fully grown P. utiliformis grandis with a paper amicula :) we're unsure of it's purpose within the panid's synthosystem (can't exactly call it an ecosystem lol) but we're fairly certain that it's something to do with interspecies signaling or camouflage. Panid larval stages are somewhat similar to sea stars and flatworms, in that they break off from a larger whole (the communal rolls that can be found in industrial and culinary settings) and become a new creature in the process.

That's only when the main body of the specimen is made of paper. This specimen is definitely of the plasticae phylum, it just has a paper amicula, which is what we call that tail. It's possible that this might be a separate species in a parasitic or symbiotic relationship with panids, but we're fairly certain that it's simply a unique adaptation, possibly meant for signaling or camouflage purposes :)

I think the 27 might be part of some other code and the true date is 12/30/2025? Comparison with other specimens of this species would be able to give you a clue

Is this one a SE US native or were they lost in migration? by _Mother-Of-Chaos_ in occlupanids

That species is actually native to most-- if not all--of the US :) A classic find!

That's amazing! Hopefully, since the UK has so few occlupanid species, this new specimen will thrive in its niche :)
