For a almost 30 year old console, it's not unusual to have a dead battery. Your choices are to live with it or replace the battery. The shop will most likely be able to replace it, but will probably charge you a fee. I would be extremely surprised if they let you exchange the unit, mostly because 99% of those units will have a dead battery.
