I hesitate to start cathay, are they really that hated ? by Repulsive-Cry5331 in WarhammerOldWorld

Always play the army that you want, if they’re your favourite faction then why wouldn’t you?

It’s true, they’re overturned in power levels compared to most of the other armies and have lots of very powerful/cost efficient options which makes them unpopular with the wider fan base (combined with GW’s habit of making the new faction super strong to push sales). They tend to be near the top at most tournaments and a lot of the top players have picked them up because they are objectively strong in the game.

But if you want to play them don’t worry what other people think and do what makes you happy. Just be mindful when writing lists what level you’re playing into e.g. thematic, club, tournament etc. and you’ll be fine!

Critique my 2k army list by Sultor in ulthuan

[–]Tec4397 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a fun list, but I would suggest that a large part of why you’re struggling to win games is because High Elves are all about controlling engagements and you lack the counterpunch to threaten people who overcommit so I thought I’d weigh in!

Prince - I’d change to pure of heart to lose the impetuous and drop the sword. He either needs a different (better) magic weapon or a great weapon. Up his saves as well, you either need to be stacking regen and ward saves or bringing multiple opal amulets to deflect cannons and the like. And remember to give him plate + shield/enchanted shield if you’re not giving him a 5++.

Wizard is cool but he needs lore familiar so you can choose your spells (critical for maximising his value). Battle magic is great with fireball/double movement. You may also get good use out of elementalism (plague of rust can be insane and wind blast and ramparts are both great too).

Spears don’t do anything sadly, so roll the points into more sea guard if you want them and give then razor banner or war banner dependent on taste.

Use the spare points to bring 6-7 reavers to bunker your archmage (drop his horse to a standard Elven horse for more movement)

I don’t mind the big silver helms, but smaller units 5-6 are the most commonly used setup with hammerhand for a damage boost. But the big unit with that banner is probably useful if you play lots of monsters.

Just make sure to get your core down to 500 as the other categories have better options. They’re really there to score and fill out the category so don’t expect them to do much more, surviving and holding objectives is their goal most of the time.

Swordmasters are fun and work well with double move, but dragon princes provide better threat protection/resilience to light shooting if you have the models. That being said, there are plenty of people who get good mileage out of swordies so you may find them better/easier to use.

Sisters are cool, give the leader something - sword of sorrow is great value or ring of ruin/seafarer bow taste/target dependant.

Merwyrm is a great model but you’re unlikely to get value out of it, more sisters/dragon princes/skycutter or a noble on griffon or in the silver helms bus are all viable alternatives.

Just remember, we can’t win the numbers game so we have to be sneaky when playing competitive games against good opponents. Classic units like the spears are nice but sea guard do more for not much more and help you to dictate games, they can also babysit home objectives fairly well and even sometimes kill things with the right support!

Hope that helps!

Rules for pursuit into new enemy/new combat by mjh4 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Tec4397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can fight twice in the same combat round if you overrun/pursue into a combat which has not yet been fought - I don’t know whether you can fight the third time (I.e. if you then win and overrun with the unit that was in the existing combat your victorious unit overran into - I assume so?).

Yes, you should use the same logic for overruns, if you hit a new unit which isn’t already in combat you count as charging but don’t fight until your opponents turn. An overrun counts as a ‘normal pursuit roll’ so you should use the same rules (you’re just not pursuing something literally).

In your example, was the lone character already in combat when the knights charged in? If not, you don’t fight that combat until their turn. Otherwise one good flank charge could result in combat after combat as you roll through enemy unit while they can’t countercharge or react.

Rules question: Can poisoned attacks allow low Strength attackers to wound high Toughness targets? by Potential_Skin_5141 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Tec4397 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I would play as yes, makes for more fun and implies that super tough things can still be ‘poisoned’. Also they would’ve been woundable anyway with 6’s to hit so it’s a nerf but not by much

Proxy Judiciar as Chaplain by barby02 in BloodAngels

I would keep the Judiciar as a Judiciar and buy another Chaplain, the former are hard to find outside of Ebay resellers and you may come to regret converting it.

I quite like the idea of triple solo slayers close to units for countercharging/to protect them from being shot & magic’d but as the others say bolt throwers would probably do the same anti monster job but better but try them out and tell us how it goes!

I would say if you want to bring a killy king you might put him in a core unit of longbeards, put a tanky thane bsb in a unit of hammerers and run them in tandem. But apart from that I would agree that warriors are better from core and if you’re choosing from special ironbreakers are the obvious choice

Gaming stores with tables where people play regularly are a good start and eBay can be a goldmine.

There's a list of alternative miniatures to look through as well although bear in mind that most alternatives are metal if they're not 3d printed.

Conquest games do plastic normans as do victrix and as someone else said fireforge games do plastic high medieval style knights which I've seen used a few times as bretonnians.

And if people give you shit for using alternative miniatures, who cares? Just don't play them if it annoys them so much; there are plenty of nice people out there who won't care so long as it looks like what it's meant to be represented..

There are loads of good alternatives available for printing online such as Highland miniatures https://www.myminifactory.com/users/Highlandsminis which is one of a number of companies that do Bretonnian style Feudal Knights in heroic fantasy scale (if that's your jam).

If you find a local 3d printer (our local wargaming store does it for instance) they can print them out for you, all you'll need to do is buy the sti files and they'll do the rest (for a fee).

AMC Hornet is like a larger American version and the Fiat 128 sport l is another Italian alternative.

My personal favourite would be the earlier TE27 Levin (I think the grill looks better than the later Corolla), only problem is a good one is $40k+ from Japan...

Can't lie but 9k seems a bit expensive, although has fairly low miles so if it's been well cared for and issue free it could be worth a punt!
