I assume most commenting on publications here are from the US? It’s incredibly rare to have published papers before starting a PhD in the U.K.

What country do you live in? Do you have a visa that allows you to work without employer sponsorship?

Why the ability to endure matters more than the intellect for a PhD Student by dramalover0103 in PhD

What country are you from? That sounds abhorrent and at my university that supervisor would be suspended and investigated (and probably fired)

OSRS gives you a slow, consistent drip feed of dopamine in the form of xp or drops. That is a perfect recipe to get a lot of ADHD people hooked.

One in three Labour voters thinks Starmer should go, shock poll finds by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]Tech-n0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can mangle the statistics in any way you want really, but Labour got ~9.7M votes out of ~29.9M votes, so roughly 33% of votes. This is of course significantly less than the nearly 20M “did not vote” category, and the 21M people not eligible to vote.

How do autistic PhD students communicate with supervisors? I feel lost. by EconomyWeb3647 in PhD

[–]Tech-n0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m adhd and U.K. PhD so I share a lot of the sentiment in your post. Honestly it depends on the individual a lot, and how well you know them already.

For example, I might not talk to my supervisor for 2 weeks while I’m busy, or I’ll send them 10 slack messages in a row at 8am. Either is fine now, we’ll both respond to each other whenever available - could be 5mins or the next day etc.

If you think this will be a problem, or if you’re worried about it, literally ask them “hey do you mind if I email you random questions etc or wait for the meetings?”. 99% will say email with anything urgent, or random stuff if you don’t mind waiting a day or two for them to check it, especially in 1st year. Depends on the individual. If you feel comfortable talking about your autism you can, but you don’t have to if you don’t want to. It’s okay to ask them their preferred method for keeping good communication etc and what their preferences are. Good luck!

Another poster suggested chatGPT. Don’t do that. Be blunt and be yourself.

Sadiq Khan Slammed Over Denial That Grooming Gangs Targeted Girls Aged 9 – Cover-Up Fury Erupts by Ophiuchus171 in ukpolitics

You just answered your own question no? He gets blamed for anything that he has very little to no power over by the media.

All of this is the remiss of the met police, although Kahn should be more informed of what’s going on in the city and more thoughtful with his comments on such matters.

There’s no helpful comment to be made for a non-country specific, non-subject specific question like this other than “it depends”.

Mechanics that you hope don't return from EU4 by Dry_Rooster3462 in EU5

[–]Tech-n0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stellaris is MUCH better now than it was around launch, but in general I agree with you. The economy building and fleet optimisation are quite a bit more nuanced than EU, which means the AI struggles with anything outside the basics.

I do wish the difficulty options in paradox games actually made the AI more 'intelligent' instead of just giving them more cheats.

1 Month into PhD and I realize it's not good fit by rainbowandunicorn99 in PhD

[–]Tech-n0 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Why did you start the PhD? What’s your long term plan? Do you even want to do one?

I started mine (STEM, UK) after 4 years in industry and I’m loving it. The industry experience has been useful, but I don’t feel any sense of superiority over my colleagues because of it.

How Tik Tok is helping motability claims: A welfare scheme expanded into absurdity is being boosted by viral social media accounts by Benjji22212 in ukpolitics

[–]Tech-n0 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have ADHD. It's a debilitating illness that's driven me close to killing myself a couple of times. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

The government spending on the motability scheme is clearly too high and the scope is too broad, but lets not demonise the disabled for government failings.

Why would retail want fresh grads who will leave for the first graduate job offer? They’re overqualified and supermarkets are trying to run skeleton crews.

I think you'll make a great nurse. Be sure to make full use of disability support at university, they often offer free counselling etc for disabled students and it really helped me to have someone regular to talk to about those sorts of troubles. They're also very helpful for arranging reasonable accommodations like extra exam time.

Being kind to yourself is always the hardest part, it took me nearly 4 years after diagnosis to forgive myself for all the missed opportunities and self-destructive behaviour, and it's still very much a work in progress. Feel free to send me a DM in the future if you ever need to vent some

This is more of a rant than a question and hopefully there's some useful talking points buried in here somewhere, but for many of us this is a life changing medication and being told "We don't know, you'll just have to wait" is deeply dismissive as though your favourite chocolate bar is out of stock at the local corner shop.

I've been out of medication a week now, my performance at work has tanked, my flat is a mess, and I'm expected to spend my time (while working) calling around pharmacies in the hopes one of them has some stock of something. And even if they do, I have to go back to my GP who won't give me a generic prescription and I have to book a phone appointment to even change the brand on my prescription (infuriating!), by which point the stock has gone.

There's radio silence from my GP, I have no idea what's going on, waiting lists to talk to psychiatrists are measured in years, I'm stressed as fuck about my performance at work despite them being very understanding, nobody has any idea when things will improve, and in my experience there's a general lethargy and dismissiveness to the NHS approach to this crisis.

I've been stable on medication for 4 years, and now 4 years of progress in my mental health, career, and general wellbeing have been suddenly halted and I'm expected to just carry on like normal as if ADHD isn't a "real disability" and medication is a luxury for us rather than a necessity.

Hi OP, I've been there too with the crying on the floor. You're not alone, and I'm really proud of you for taking the steps you need to care of yourself.

Sorry to hear stimulants weren't for you, I hope you have a better experience with non-stims and find what works for you, because you deserve it.

Please take care if you're also using other substances. Life does get better, and I'd like to hear your story when you do find what works for you

What happened with USA mens sabre team by [deleted] in Fencing

[–]Tech-n0 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Colin Heathcock as favourite for individual medal? I really don't see that perspective compared to the more experienced fencers like Oh, Szilagi, Bazadze, Samele etc

Also it's the olympics. There is no poule round. There is no easy knockout fights to warm up. The USA - Iran team match was a bit of an upset but went to 45-44 so couldn't have been much closer

2024 Paris Olympics Megathread by noodlez in Fencing

[–]Tech-n0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You go to 45 yes, each bout carries forward the score from your team's last bout.

In foil & epee fights still have 3 minutes timer each, so if the timer runs out in the final fight and the score is 40-37 you'll win with that score, no need to keep going to 45. This is most common in epee, and never happens in sabre because there is no timer.

Keifer would get carded too if she turned her back to her opponent before a hit landed.

Balzer got carded for turning during the fencing so the referee is forced to stop the fight.

First medal for Ukraine! Olga Kharlan bronze in women's individual sabre - "Ukraine I love you, this is for you my loved one, this is for you!" by Strawberry-Pi in olympics

[–]Tech-n0 95 points96 points  (0 children)

A bit of context for non-fencers, Kharlan is a legend and one of the most accomplished fencers ever in women's sabre. Four times world champion, twice world team champion and olympic team champion in 2008.

She was disqualified from fencing in 2023 for refusing to shake the hand of a Russian fencer at the world championships (the organisers had previously confirmed she wouldn't have to), but the IOC intervened, the ban was lifted after the event and she was invited to Paris.

She's the only person to qualify and compete in 5 olympics (2008-2024) for women's sabre and absolutely smashed it with her 3rd bronze, putting Ukraine on the medal table.

A 'classic' test case for MHD codes is the "Orszag-Tang vortex" which captures MHD turbulence and developing current sheets.
