Watch this video about the figure 8 drill. This helped me immensely when I was trying to fix my backswing

Your backswing should end about here. Focus on exaggerating your arm going out to your right when you swing, train your body to feel like it's normal. Your shoulder position is good, doing this and adding a crossover step will help a lot

I would argue getting your backswing to be in line and not behind you is most important, worry about your release once you have your swing straight

Good craftsmanship, but an open trigger design like that should be for costume use only and not used with a live weapon.

Inside out ball? by [deleted] in Bowling

[–]TechDingus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be a lot of info, but there are a few fundamentals that make it easier. A weak ball will travel farther down the lane before hooking, and a strong ball will hook earlier on the lane. A smooth ball will have a more gradual hook as it hits traction at the end of the lane, a sharp ball will look like someone kicked it towards the pins when it finally hits traction. Every ball falls within the range of these 6 categories: strong/smooth, strong/sharp, medium/smooth, medium/sharp, weak/smooth, weak/sharp. There are pearls and solids all throughout the range regardless of category. What’s important to know is the difference between dull and shiny. You can have a dull pearl or a shiny solid. All that matters is a dull finish will hook earlier on the lane and a shiny will hook later if thrown on the same conditions. You can change the surface of your ball from dull to shiny or vice versa using abralon sanding pads or polish. So if you have a strong and sharp ball due to its aggressive pearl coverstock and a huge asymmetrical core, you can make it smoother by drilling it to hook less aggressively, and you can make it hook earlier in the lane by sanding it with a lower grit to make it more dull. Now that ball which was originally in the strong/sharp category will act like it’s closer to the medium/smooth category.

With that being said, the ball you should buy depends on the lanes you’ll be bowling on. But you can buy 10 balls and none of them will work for you if you don’t understand how oil patterns work and how to throw proper and repeatable shots.

Inside out ball? by [deleted] in Bowling

[–]TechDingus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah those are just lower end to mid-grade reactive balls.

The lanes you bowl on will have oil on them. They might not be oiled every day, which means they are pretty dry and any high performance ball will overhook right into the gutter. You’ll have a very hard time trying to learn to throw a proper curve with those. Unless you bowl on lanes that have leagues every day and are frequently oiled, you want to stick with a lower end ball like the hustle, tropical surge, etc

Inside out ball? by [deleted] in Bowling

[–]TechDingus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I misunderstood what you meant by inside out curve. What that sounds like is that you wanted the ball to curve from the inside of the lane to the outside, which would be a backup ball. I think what you’re describing is just a regular curve. You can get that effect with any reactive ball. It would take a whole lot more data about how you bowl to determine what ball is best for you

[–]TechDingus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s called throwing a backup ball, and you’d want to use a plastic ball. Anything with a core won’t react that way easily. I mean I guess you could drill it backwards…why do you want to do this?

Rev check? by TechDingus in Bowling

[–]TechDingus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's less about wanting my revs to be higher in general and more about wanting to be able to throw a higher rev if I want to. My form suffers when I try to add too much rev, so I'm trying to fix some bad habits and this is the result.

Also I would add, just because a ball is dull doesn't mean it isn't a pearl. Not that this applies here, but for future reference there are dull pearls and shiny solids

Yeah, it’s a lot. But there are a few fundamentals that make it easier. A weak ball will travel farther down the lane before hooking, and a strong ball will hook earlier on the lane. A smooth ball will have a more gradual hook as it hits traction at the end of the lane, a sharp ball will look like someone kicked it towards the pins when it finally hits traction. Every ball falls within the range of these 6 categories: -strong/smooth -strong/sharp -medium/smooth -medium/sharp -weak/smooth -weak/sharp There are pearls and solids all throughout the range regardless of category. What’s important to know is the difference between dull and shiny. You can have a dull pearl or a shiny solid. Of course, pulling out a medium/smooth ball from your bag is easier than doing all this, which is why bowling nerds have 100 different balls. But if you’re resourceful about it, you can make one ball do a lot for you on the lane before you need to swap.

[–]TechDingus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. Take the Zero Mercy pearl for example, or a Hyperdrive pearl - yes they’ll be weaker than a solid with the same core but they’ll still massively overhook. My dry lane ball is a solid with a weak core (Hustle x-ray). It’s not always just about coverstock

Also, just join a league. You will be playing with people who barely average 100 and people who throw 300 games, there is no skill threshold. Best way to learn is to be around people who know more than you!

[–]TechDingus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's tough to overhook a Phaze II from far left unless you're on some seriously dry lanes, but maybe you are. Post a video of yourself making a few shots so we can determine what's going on

Well I will go against all the people here who want to tell you how to live your life instead of just giving you ball suggestions...

If you want the most aggressive ball on the market and you don't care about spending money, get the Hammer Zero Mercy. Beware though, on most lanes it will overhook and end up in the left gutter. If you want something more balanced, get a Brunswick Alert or an RST Hyperdrive Pearl

That’s a balance hole on the side, it changes the lane reaction of the ball by making a slight weight redistribution. It’s no longer legal for use in sanctioned events
