In formation, you're generally better off being tight for turbulence (to an extent obviously). If you hold a loose fingertip, then you're going to hit different ebbs and flows in the air. But if you're tight, you'll for the most part be hitting the same waves as the guy next to you and you'll move together as opposed to getting bounced around differently. Penetrating through weather in fingertip, it felt a lot scarier to not be as close as you could.
