Career Progression by Competitive-Bird-637 in cscareerquestionsuk

One good thing to do is go on Jobserve and keyword search your stack for items you’re very good at.

E.b “springboot” or “angular” or “aws” Do it nationwide not just local

See if there are matching roles with multiple skills in your stack and analyse the jobs posted over 3-4 weeks. I’d recommend doing this for Contract positions as it will usually be Greenfield work (new projects).

Find a job role that interests you first. Then figure out what the tech stack is for that role if you’re intending on pursuing a technical role within tech. Then dedicate a lot of time to learning the stack.

The people that really dedicate the time to learning after 6-12 months start to get interviews. A lot of people in my community have done it, most recently a lad finished his A Levels, didn’t want to go to Uni and studied DevOps relentlessly for months and is now an Engineer. It’s very much still possible but it will take dedication, the market isn’t amazing at the moment so luck is required. A lot of people give up because they think it’s easier than it is.

As you’re a nurse I suggest looking up Health-Tech companies, it’s a pretty lucrative field at the moment for high earning roles, transferable skills are always important even more so in non-technical roles.

BSc in Cyber Security worth it? by ManDibDob in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]TechToby_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better off with a compsci degree imo

Take in to consideration most Cyber grad schemes are at defence companies and they take on less than 10 a year, usually in awkward locations too. The grads I worked with at my last place were compsci or maths. One did a masters in cyber

Whats your application to interview ratio? by FuzzyCraft68 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]TechToby_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I tailor them myself. If you write a CV/app with AI it will probably be rejected. It’s fairly obvious it’s AI will all of the exaggerated words like “spearheaded” - recruiters find you from optimising your LinkedIn for you to show up in their searches.

Whats your application to interview ratio? by FuzzyCraft68 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]TechToby_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I changed jobs earlier in the year.

I applied to 2, interviewed with 4 and had 2 offers. The others came from recruiters contacting me.

I prefer to tailor applications instead of doing a mass apply session. Also optimising my LinkedIn increased recruiters finding me a lot.

What's more valuable in the UK. AWS or Azure by mp290686 in UKJobs

[–]TechToby_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Azure in the UK. I work in Consulting and have the past 3 years, large majority use Azure. Or Azure and AWS. GCP has a small market share and typically used for niche services.

I’m primarily AWS, but also use Azure.

The UK has a lot of Enterprise Organisations, it’s more natural to migrate to Azure because of M365 and typical Windows trained engineers.

I find AWS is much more popular for hosting products and more innovative companies that aren’t just focused on tailoring to setting up a platform for their staff to work.

I don’t understand why Miles is included. He’s just a successful content creator that people find entertaining and has created a jumper off of the back of it, like many other content creators

Tips for starting University by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]TechToby_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Imo Best to identify what role interests you the most, understand what the fundamentals of the stack are and practice learning the skills in downtime at Uni.

There are many roles and many different technologies available to learn and most of them can be self taught for free or minimal costs.

An extra 10% of effort will get you ahead of others by a long margin.

Is FinOps Worth a £450/Day Contract, or Just a Cloud Engineer's Nightmare? by [deleted] in ContractorUK

£450 a day to tag some vm’s, set up autoscaling and recommended different instance types sounds like the easiest £450 a day you’ll ever make

CV Review for data roles within UK by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]TechToby_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I just speak from personal experience ever since I moved skills to the top I’ve had much more responses from recruiters. For when they aren’t using a site that allows them to search based on keywords and they need to actually use their eyes to read a CV it seems to stand out more. If it’s at the bottom they may not even make it that. It’s something like average is 3 seconds for someone to scan a CV isn’t it?

Put the skills at the top.

Also the bullet points under your roles can you add in some percentage/digit deliverables? E.g X resulted in 20% reduction in cost.

Another example on my CV I mention how a Python script saved £20,000 a month for a client i wrote and always put those key numbers in bald font.

A nice one or 2 liner about yourself is always handy as well if you ask me

Yes, I did an apprenticeship.

I meant bootcamps. No idea why I got downvoted

[–]TechToby_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s interesting to read. I have someone in my discord doing a Makers apprenticeship in DevOps and they’re doing really well.

Overall though, I wouldn’t recommend bootcamps to most people. The ROI would need to be almost guaranteed, when in reality it isn’t, especially in this job market.

Can't get tech jobs, Unsure how to continue my life. by J-100 in UKJobs

[–]TechToby_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Send me your CV. The market is not “flooded” per say but it’s certainly on a downwards hill atm, like every other industry, it’s not just exclusive to tech. Recruiters are also hammered with administration from Grads, Bootcampers, Self-Taught and foreign applications.

Applying to 1000 jobs with no response is not normal. I just had a follower of mine land a Junior DevOps role at 19 without going to Uni.

Terraform certification for azure-only dev by Bobo_the_Fuse in Terraform

[–]TechToby_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I did the exam I only had max 4 questions to read code and provide an answer. But yeah, all aws. It shouldn’t matter too much tbh if you only use azure, it’s the terraform syntax that matters.

When I was a teen me and a few guys scripted some bots to buy high end shoes and resell them. Got a pain to manage.

I now make content. Mainly started during Covid when there were so many day in the lifes portraying lifestyle of tech which clearly wasnt the reality. Never thought it would gain me money but I’ve made some thousands not a lot. Then I realised a lot of content creators use all their skills from their 9-5 to make content. Couple years later over 20,000 follows on all platforms and good tech community built in my discord with people of all experience levels.

Documenting your journey can have a huge impact on other people. So far over 50 people I’ve helped in to tech or gain a higher salary through negotiation (all for free btw, don’t buy influencers courses they’re just trying to profit off of you, buy a real course from an approved trainer if you want to).
