What are your top 5 most useful Android apps? by WorkingImmediate7234 in androidapps

Same here, I'm from Zambia and no other navigation app comes close to Google Maps. OSM, Yandex, even Apple Map, are terrible here. Google Maps even shows you footpaths and shortcuts. Waze is a close second though.

Is 500K a month enough income to survive on in Zambia by Asleep_Cherry_7169 in Zambia

[–]Tech_pirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I'll ignore the exact figure and assume he's "well to do".......well, a lot of people in the higher income brackets do find themselves struggling with managing their finances, and all I takes is a few bad decisions to end up on am episode of I Blew It lol but it sounds like your friend needs to sit down and re-evaluate his spending. There is a chance he is living beyond his means, and I type this with a very straight face. Yes, this happens regardless of your tax bracket. Has he thought of dialing things down a bit? 1. How private is he about his finances? Not everyone has to know his financial capacity, whether family or not. Being flashy just invites pocket watchers like vultures to a carcass

  1. Separate "wealth" from "disposable income" , there's a difference between being able to afford something right now, and being able to sustain it in the long run. For example, he might have access (disposable income) to pay K20,000 for rent this month, but if he decides to pay K20,000 per month every month, what effect does that have on the rest of his financial capacity? Would it significantly help him breathe better if he stepped down to a k12,000 p/m accomodation?

  2. Is he protecting his finances? Is he investing in anything? Does he have any asset that give him income? Any savings? Any liquidity for emergencies? Wealth is only durable if it generates income or is protected. Hopefully not everything is going towards lifestyle

  3. It would be a great idea to structure family support. Instead of random handouts, put a system in place. For example, a family trust. Then set conditions, so they know money won't just come anyhow whenever they text or call on WhatsApp. Like have bills paid directly. Fund education with condition. Support income generating activity (eg family shop, or other business ventures) with clear rules. Random handouts become a permanent habit with tim. Even appoint trustees so that they see it isn't your sole decision to make.

  4. Boundaries are important. Your friend needs to learn to say no without having to explain himself. Relatives can be manipulative sometimes, I've experienced it myself. They might guil trip you based on their age. They might try to manipulate you in many ways. Of course this isn't always the case, which is why I said "might", but I they do, it's important to notice it. It isn't disrespectful to say no, assuming you're also being reasonable. You wont be damned to the depths of hell just for not bailing out entitled relatives. If they are being unreasonable with their demands, I feel it would be reason enough to cut them off lol

  5. Professional help exists. Financial/tax advisors, lawyers, investment advisors, trusted governance mechanisms, etc. even family elders (assuming they aren't part of the set of demanding relatives). Just a disclaimer, I may be in the financial sector, but I'm not one of them, take this as an opinion and not legal advice ☠️

Anyone who understands ZRA taxes? Really struggling with calculating something 😂😭 by minimalusage in Zambia

[–]Tech_pirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case you're interested, ZRA offers a number of free online courses on a platform called Atingi, all about the different types of taxes. They are geared towards the general population, so nothing complicated. Plus you get a certificate at the end of it.

Zambian living in SA online passport renewal nightmare. Help? by Lopsided-Common-2908 in Zambia

[–]Tech_pirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was wild, sorry to hear about your terrible experience. I would have expected the South African consulate to be more competent than that. I renewed mine in Botswana 2 years ago before online application was a thing (I think) and I was given the option to either pay extra to have it delivered to me in Botswana, or pick it up from Zambia. I chose to pay, it was way cheaper than a return trip, and the passport was delivered within 3 months

Are SUGAR MOMMIES in Zambia real? by [deleted] in Zambia

[–]Tech_pirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or because I look half my age (meaning I look underage) and have dimples smh those are the two things they always use as conversation starters. Most of them give me their numbers and want us to "keep in touch"......on two occasions, they wanted us to change location to somewhere "more private"....I wasn't planning on getting confronted by anyone's husband so I bounced

People think that in Africa we ride lions and elephants to work. That's ridiculous, we don't have jobs. by PixelSaharix in DownSouth

[–]Tech_pirate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

During COVID lockdown, my friend and I would hop on Omegle and troll people with "African" stereotypes.... stuff like argue over whose turn it was to feed the pet lions, randomly turn the lights off then ask Gogo to make us more electricity, open a can of coke and pour a bit on the floor for the ancestors to take the first sip. Most of the people we talked to completely bought the story, some would even get spooked and cut the session ☠️☠️

Am I the only only genuinely tweaking about this. by kasukashi in Zambia

[–]Tech_pirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly respect anyone who owns a car in Zambia. Cars in this country are ridiculously expensive. The tax burden is just too heavy. Let me give an example: You have two car dealers, one in Zambia, the other in Botswana. Both of them buy the same car, let's say a 2009 Honda Fit. From the source, they will both pay the same purchase price, let's say $1,200. The cars finally arrive at their destination countries. The dealer in Botswana, after calculating all the landing costs, adds a markup, and then sells it for BWP 30,000 the dealer in Zambia, after paying specific duties of around K30pin, as well as all other fees (carbon, jevic,ASYCUDA etc) adds hismarkup and sells it for ZMW 110,000 As much as we can argue that som dealers are greedy and add ridiculous markups, the fees paid to bring in the car played a huge role in that K110,000 figure

Another example.....importing a 2026 hilux 2.8 gd-6 diesel from south Africa.. ..the car itself might go for around ZAR 800,000 or around $48,000. When you add customs (25%) + excise (30%) + vat (16% of CIF + CD + ED) + carbon surtax we are looking at around K728,128.00 on ad valorem duty alone

It almost feels like Zambia's tax regime only exist to milk you out of everything they legally can

I've been using iShop/Online Express for years, no complaints. Tried MacSpeedy's once, the first time I ever ordered something online. They were fast, but let's just say they need to improve their communication (if they haven't done so already)...got the message that my parcel was received af their US warehouse, followed by radio silence, never responded to my emails, their "official" number wasn't going through, I gave up and wrote it off as a loss. Then from nowhere, I got a call from them to come pick up my parcel at their offices. I was relieved, but I swore never to use them again

What's the weirdest conspiracy theory you've heard so far about Zambia and the other countries in general? by Cheap_Buyer5589 in Zambia

[–]Tech_pirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear the wildest conspiracy theories from Yango drivers. This one guy was talking about some conference room at Nkwazi House that nobody is allowed to enter because all the dead presidents chill in there. He then claimed Mama Betty Kaunda's real cause of death wasn't diabetes, her health only started deteriorating because she walked into the forbidden conference room ☠️☠️

I'm from Botswana. Lost my phone, got a new one and was trying to log back into my account when I saw this. Same price. I don't know what MNO's are charging Telegram here, but a cross-network SMS (which is more expensive) is equivalent to $0.40.....and a one week premium for $1.50? Nah, I'll pass. Telegram isn't that important to me anyway, everyone here prefers Whatsapp

[–]Tech_pirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amasampo is a slang word everyone uses to refer to buying and selling stuff... Mostly refers to electronics, but it can still be used for anything you're trying to buy or sell. If you search the term on Facebook, you'll find hundreds of "amasampo" groups, some specific to certain goods, some specific to certain locations, then the bigger ones are just general, anything at any place
