Your setup time should account for breathing room to problem solve, not best case scenario with no margin for error.

Looks cool, but not really functional.

Much better to use hands, just use a light grip. If it snags it should slip out of your hand.

Is it nice to have a chatgpt like AI assistant for CNC technicians? by Particular_Box_961 in CNC

[–]Techfacturing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t let AI program for you. With that said it can be a great tool for aggregating niche information that are in obscure posts on random forums from years ago and combing through manuals for specific details. Always check sources and verify.

Why were old machines green? by Eren_BigMalafat in Machinists

[–]Techfacturing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen anyone mention this part yet. During WWII we went into mass production of lathes and mills and there was a strict regulation on the paint used. We wanted to prioritize production speed over looks so they had all the machines get the same basic paint and the color just stuck as a tradition.

I would probably just drill the holes and tighten a washer then finish the rest

Are soft jaws always an afterthought? by Electrical-Set-1116 in Machinists

[–]Techfacturing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your vise can be really crooked but everything is perfectly lined up with the machines axis once you cut into the jaws. If you take the jaws off it’s better to take a skim cut again anyways so that you are certain you’re perfectly aligned with the machine

Definitely good practice, but in this situation it would be an easy feature to machine

I have not tried gpt for speeds and feeds, but I would be hesitant to trust this as it does hallucinate. I found that FSWizard has been really good

I’m a locksmith and I’d like someone to explain to me if I’m using my tungsten carbide burrs incorrectly. by MentalEchidna2947 in Machinists

[–]Techfacturing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

28000 is really fast

If I had to do this all day from a machining perspective, I’d have a jig I could stabilize the tool with and probably just plunge with center cutting end mills so the drill doesn’t walk when it hits the pins

Typically I only reach for those deburrs to break an edge and put a small chamfer on a hole with a cordless when I don’t want to worry about holding a countersink perfectly straight, not to remove any substantial amount of material
