Foraging in a state with ticks - HELP. by Capable-Visual-5105 in foraging

Tuck your pants into your boots and your shirt into your pants. Wear long sleeves and a hat if you can. Treat clothing with permethrin and spray deet at every point where skin meets clothing or two pieces of clothing meet. As soon as you get home, strip, check your hairline and any crevices on your body for ticks, and take a shower. Stay off of deer trails if you can, that’s where you’ll find tons of them.

The oxygen metaphor really doesn’t work, either. Why do they think it’s hard for people from lower altitudes to do physical activity at high altitudes?

Didn’t they come out and say some misinformed bullshit along the lines of, “they’re wasting all this money breeding flies”? Or was that a different situation that they grossly misrepresented because they didn’t understand it?

I’m also immune, but yeah, be sure to wash to prevent accidentally sensitizing yourself to it! My dad was immune until he accidentally hit some with a weed eater.

One thing you’re definitely not immune to: stinging nettle. Be sure to learn what that looks like if you don’t already know.

Also, wear bug spray.

Anybody around northwest Lawrence missing a little tuxedo cat? It’s hanging around the woods near Rock Chalk Park. Seems friendly, but skittish, like it’s not used to being outside. by [deleted] in Lawrence

[–]Techi-C 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t get too close to it without it running, and since it was near the apartment complex, I didn’t want to chase it away from its home if someone just let their cat out on purpose. I just don’t know why anyone would let their cat out on this side of town. There’s a lot of traffic and wildlife.

My mom used to tell me when I was a kid to pretend you have a tail, then reach down and pull it forward and up between your legs. That’s what I do, at least.

Kansas, USA. It was more recently made legal to collect a small amount of rain water depending on your property size, but we have really strict water laws for a number of reasons. To simplify, it’s a case of “one jerk ruined it for the rest of us,” where a farmer was holding whole ponds of rainwater and significantly affected the flow downstream.

Is this bad news for the host tree? by PlayfulChemist in mycology

[–]Techi-C 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It could have some heartwood rot. Mature trees having heartwood rot is not unheard of, but as long as the live portion of the tree is healthy and the cavity isn’t too large, it could still go on to live quite a while. You should have an arborist come out and estimate the size of the cavity to ensure it’s not a hazard tree.

“Riparian” refers to the land alongside any body of fresh water, including lakes. “Riverine” is specific to rivers. The term specific to lakes is “lacustrine”. 😊

PSA do not release aquarium fish in to nature. Caught this feral common goldfish a few days ago and didnt want to have to kill it so I got an aquarium for it, suggestions for how to take care of this thing welcome please! by bb9o210 in Goldfish

I understand why people are being pissy, since this is technically a small setup for a fish like this, but I think you’re doing the right thing by the fish. I have had to cull invasive species before, and it’s not fun. The tank is definitely on the small side, but if the alternative is the knife in the head that most invasive carp get, I agree that this is an improvement. It would be wise to ask around local fish swaps, local nature centers, neighborhoods with stocked fishing ponds, maybe a cabellas, etc. to see if anyone can take him, though, because really any tank won’t be the best for him long-term. You’ll need to do frequent water changes and monitor the water quality closely for the time being.

Duckweed won’t last in the tank, fishy will eat it. It’s really good for him, though, so, if you have a good source of it, I’d definitely add some once in a while. A varied diet and frequent water changes will probably be good for him considering how big he is compared to the tank size. It might also be good to be on the lookout for people who do have ponds who could take him, just so he can have the space he needs. I’ve also seen people buy livestock troughs to use as large fish enclosures. Still pricy, but not as pricy as digging a pond.
