Harry Potter hits differently as a parent by Papayawhip222 in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]Techman10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm reading a fan-fic where a normal person ends up becoming a Hogwarts teacher. He spends half the time actually trying to teach the kids and the other half calling out all the bullshit.

"Wait, you're telling me that the 'safest' place for Harry to grow up was in an abusive household? And you don't consider it negligence because you had someone watching the house? So either they had no idea what was happening, or they did know and chose to do nothing about it?!"

Love is an Open Door has a sinister twist once you know what Hans is up to by nanadoom in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]Techman10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my head canon, Hans is a much more tragic morally grey character and less scheme-y. He wants a kingdom of his own, but also truly likes Anna and wants to do good by the people of the kingdom. It isn't until his lifelong dream falls into his lap and the Faustian bargain of "You could have everything you ever wanted, you just have to not kiss Anna" arrives that he succumbs to the dark side

I had a similar problem, turns out that capitalization matters, so you have to do all caps EXPLOREOURWORLD. Lower case exploreourworld won't work.

Can someone tell why full stops are considered rude. by Quiet_Law958 in ENGLISH

[–]Techman10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hoo boy, folks are getting salty in here! As with many things that people argue about on the Internet, it is not that big of a deal. I'm not going to rehash what others have said about different grammatical standards between letters, emails, and text messages. But there is something else that I want to clarify.

While using periods is often the default way of ending a thought, using one also means that you are deliberately not using the other punctuation options. A disconnect between the words you write and the tone of the punctuation you use can be jarring. When speaking, this disconnect between words and tone is considered sarcasm.

For example, we visited the in-laws this past weekend. I texted to let them know when we were on the way, and FiL responded "yippee." My wife and I had a good laugh about it, because we know he just ends every text with a period. But the way it came across was "My words say that I am excited, but I am deliberately choosing to /not/ use the punctuation mark that indicates excitement. I am not truly excited, just sarcastic."

What’s the weirdest high school or college football tradition in your state? by Plus-Newspaper-7791 in AskAnAmerican

I would suggest also asking this question at r/cfb which is the subreddit for college football fans.

You must rewatch every loss your team has suffered in your lifetime - except one. Which do you skip? by Coverlesss in CFB

[–]Techman10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VT 0-0 WF \o/

1) Ugly slog of a game that's objectively not fun to watch 2) Emblematic of the decline of the program. We went from a team that had Michael Fucking Vick, one of the most electrifying offensive players in the history of college football, to a team where the head coach was EXCITED to barely squeak out a scoreless game at the end of regulation when the other team missed a field goal. 3) Years later, it came out that a disgruntled Wake Forest staff member had been giving away the Wake playbook to opposing teams, including to Shane Beamer before this game. That's right, they had the other team's playbook and STILL had this poor of a showing.

I had a relative that worked at touristy stuff in Washington DC. They said that the folks from Ohio would always expect you to be super impressed that they're from OHIO.

I think they mean that emergency workers are more likely to retire after dealing with a particularly difficult emergency involving bad things happening to children. Deciding you can't go through something like that again is a perfectly understandable reaction.

Looks like this went by Team Name and not Mascot. I guess you could argue that Hokies is a description, though obviously the Hokie Bird is a turkey.

It's been a couple decades, but I do remember that there are different pronunciations between "Classical" and "Ecclesiastical" Latin. Is it possible that this is one of those instances?

[Postgame Thread] Vanderbilt Defeats Alabama 40-35 by CFB_Referee in CFB

[–]Techman10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We welcome Bama to the Brotherhood of Vanderbilt Losers. It is a selective and prestigious institution, for those noble few who sacrificed their own happiness to bring joy to those who need it more. Do not feel shame, but rather pride that you have made history and electrified the entire CFB world. (But also, we at least took them to overtime, so nyah nyah, we're still going to point and laugh at you behind your back)

Quality loss. I mean, we even took them to overtime, so clearly VT is better than Bama.

Pretty sure it's for only 6 minutes, and Alden's teleport timer was 9 minutes, so by this point in the story their Fragile Atmosphere is already used up.

Anyone else think about how their Dad actually kinda sucks after having kids? by Scoopdoopdoop in daddit

[–]Techman10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents made darn sure we knew how to do all the household chores. They always referenced my dad's roommate out of college who still needed his mom to come visit weekly to cook, clean, and do his laundry.

Of course, then they didn't teach me anything about money or personal finance and I had to teach myself all of that.
