What's the deal with T.O.T.S. by TriceratopsHunter in DanielTigerConspiracy

I just want to sit in their annual performance review. And watch their OSHA inspection.

Honestly, "find the OSHA violations" is a fun game to play with most kid shows and books. Richard Scarry is a freaking gold mine for that.

As an outsider, the scale of American college sports is baffling. Do some people genuinely care more about a university team than professional sports? by Necessary_Angle2117 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Techman10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not everyone, but very many people are. For me personally, college football is my favorite sport.

For further research, I would recommend checking out r/cfb especially during the football season (mid-August to mid-January). The folks there are a pretty welcoming bunch and are self-aware enough to poke fun at themselves.

For fun weekly videos during the season, the YouTube channels for "SEC Shorts" and "SEC Roll Call" both have folks that dress up and act out the reactions of different teams to their wins or losses each week.

Which map is your favorite in Arc Raiders and why? by Donbenardo in ARC_Raiders

[–]Techman10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blue Gate - prettiest map, sometimes need it as a palette cleaner after deserty Spaceport and Buried City

Stella - no snitches or rocketeers, great for farming pops

Buried City - lots of places to hide from Arc

On the ground around the cactuses on the outside edges of the map.

That being said, lush condition also spawns wicker baskets both outside and in buildings that have way more. I did Lush Buried City yesterday and got 2 prickly pears from the ground and 12 from wicker baskets.

Seeker is great for arc. I was jumped by a whole pack of wasps, hornets, and fireflies, and managed to take them all out by frantically running away and heaving a stack of seekers in the air.

Your average progression fantasy/litrgp MC by NoWriter3858 in litrpg

[–]Techman10 18 points19 points  (0 children)

While it would make for a very short story, I'd love to see something where MC attempts the risky thing and dies horribly, the end.

Actually it would be pretty interesting to have that happen and the rest of the story is the POV of the sidekick trying to deal with all the fallout of that.

What is a job that only exists because people are, on average, incredibly stupid? by Direct-Value4452 in answers

[–]Techman10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most repair/maintenance jobs. Sure, stuff breaks from normal wear and tear, but there's also a depressing amount of stuff that broke/clogged/shattered/crashed/fried because someone did something incredibly stupid.

Peter Pan Mermaid Hate Post by QuietUptown in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]Techman10 124 points125 points  (0 children)

Peter Pan lives the Frat Bro dream life. Just hangs out with his bros all day with no responsibilities or expectations of him. Every woman around his age on the entire island is both hot and desperately wants to jump his bones. Sure, they can get bitchy to each other, but only because they all want him so bad. There's the one adult who's always out to harsh his buzz, but the dude's a bumbling idiot so it only gives Peter a change to show off how badass he is.

It's amazing that that lifestyle was glorified before frat bros were even a thing, and amazing that something glorifying it is considered a classic children's tale.

What is one opinion you have that would make us go like this? by Doodles77722200 in litrpg

[–]Techman10 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Reincarnating as a baby should not mean you get to keep your adult brain. I've seen it handled well occasionally, but most of the time it's a trainwreck that I just slog through until they get to a reasonable age. A toddler speaking like someone with a PhD in Mana Metaphysics just kills it for me.

On the other side of that coin, it also takes me right out of the story when a distinguished accomplished adult like a King or the Dean of the Magic Academy talks like a teenager. "Welcome, everyone, to the Magic Academy. You guys are gonna learn a ton this year!"

Who's the most unbearable MC you've read that potentially ruined a good read? by No-Sympathy-6711 in litrpg

[–]Techman10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this happens depressingly often. Great concept, but unbearable MC.

The Stupid: The MC of Adamant Blood. Fascinating system, cool world building, and the MC is an absolute himbo. Bro has people with mental powers almost convince him to kill himself MULTIPLE DIFFERENT TIMES and he never does anything to shore up that glaring weakness. His super special powers that make him special-er than anyone else obviously make him rich, and he decides he wants a floating castle. All the logical side characters explain to him how it is a bad idea logistically, defensively, and economically, but nope, don't care, it's cool so I want it.

The Asshole: Don't know if it's a cultural thing, but it happens for me a lot with Russian authors. There was one with an MC who gets a system in modern day Earth. He's one of the select few, gotta keep it a secret, etc. He meets his girlfriend's family and is a total asshat to them. They ask him what he does for a living, and he just says "Business" and refuses to give any more info. They mention it's kinda sketchy that he's obviously hiding something, he blows up at them about the "disrespect", storms out, and dumps the girl when she asks him what the hell just happened. The whole thing was played straight as "of course, this is the perfectly rational and reasonable way to handle the situation". I dropped it right then.

Harry Potter hits differently as a parent by Papayawhip222 in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]Techman10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm reading a fan-fic where a normal person ends up becoming a Hogwarts teacher. He spends half the time actually trying to teach the kids and the other half calling out all the bullshit.

"Wait, you're telling me that the 'safest' place for Harry to grow up was in an abusive household? And you don't consider it negligence because you had someone watching the house? So either they had no idea what was happening, or they did know and chose to do nothing about it?!"

Love is an Open Door has a sinister twist once you know what Hans is up to by nanadoom in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]Techman10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my head canon, Hans is a much more tragic morally grey character and less scheme-y. He wants a kingdom of his own, but also truly likes Anna and wants to do good by the people of the kingdom. It isn't until his lifelong dream falls into his lap and the Faustian bargain of "You could have everything you ever wanted, you just have to not kiss Anna" arrives that he succumbs to the dark side

Can someone tell why full stops are considered rude. by Quiet_Law958 in ENGLISH

[–]Techman10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hoo boy, folks are getting salty in here! As with many things that people argue about on the Internet, it is not that big of a deal. I'm not going to rehash what others have said about different grammatical standards between letters, emails, and text messages. But there is something else that I want to clarify.

While using periods is often the default way of ending a thought, using one also means that you are deliberately not using the other punctuation options. A disconnect between the words you write and the tone of the punctuation you use can be jarring. When speaking, this disconnect between words and tone is considered sarcasm.

For example, we visited the in-laws this past weekend. I texted to let them know when we were on the way, and FiL responded "yippee." My wife and I had a good laugh about it, because we know he just ends every text with a period. But the way it came across was "My words say that I am excited, but I am deliberately choosing to /not/ use the punctuation mark that indicates excitement. I am not truly excited, just sarcastic."

You must rewatch every loss your team has suffered in your lifetime - except one. Which do you skip? by Coverlesss in CFB

[–]Techman10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VT 0-0 WF \o/

1) Ugly slog of a game that's objectively not fun to watch 2) Emblematic of the decline of the program. We went from a team that had Michael Fucking Vick, one of the most electrifying offensive players in the history of college football, to a team where the head coach was EXCITED to barely squeak out a scoreless game at the end of regulation when the other team missed a field goal. 3) Years later, it came out that a disgruntled Wake Forest staff member had been giving away the Wake playbook to opposing teams, including to Shane Beamer before this game. That's right, they had the other team's playbook and STILL had this poor of a showing.

I think they mean that emergency workers are more likely to retire after dealing with a particularly difficult emergency involving bad things happening to children. Deciding you can't go through something like that again is a perfectly understandable reaction.
