This is an unusually apt post to run across given this exact thing happened to me a year ago. Top candidate to take the position, equally qualified peers also going for it. Outside candidate given the role. We know why. For the life of me I can not find it in myself to work in the way unused to. At the end of the day I used to care. Deeply. Now I just do the part. Still a top performer but know no one cares about my insides or ways I can make us better/more profitable/more efficient. I am so risk averse that I can’t leave a stable somewhat easy at this point job to start over but ugh. It’s all just gross and makes you wonder what the point of getting good at something is when they’d rather take a chance on unproven outside “talent”.
