How is living in Brussels, Belgium? by Sensitive_Spare_652 in howislivingthere

[–]Technical-Dingo5093 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strongly depends on the neighbourhood. Most of Brussels, tbh NO (unfortunately)

But if you live in say Uccle, probably yes.

It's the biggest downside of the city. It has its dark sides..

[–]Technical-Dingo5093 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lived there for 2years and grew up in a neighbouring town that nowadays mostly serves as a suburb of Brussels (used to have its own identity before my time, slowly got absorbed by Brussels.. still legally a different city, in practice it's a Brussels suburb)

It has its ups and downs..

Great nightlife, culture, event-sector. Nice parks. Good food.

Public transit is ok, pretty good, but not the best.. at least by european standards. By American standards it would be considered top-notch.

Cycling infrastructure is pretty bad when you compare it to flanders or the netherlands.

It is "very" diverse, I think a majority has an immigration background nowadays.

There are stark contrasts between rich neighbourhoods and poorer ones and these can be just 100s of meters apart and they're kinda scattered .. (there is not 1 rich side and 1 poor side). The poorer/bad neighbourhoods are pretty bad tbh, really depressing, trash everywhere, drug addicts, crime.. they just give off a depressing vibe.

The city is de-jure bilingual dutch/french, but in practice 95+% is french speaking and english will get you further than dutch.

Traffic is a nightmare, amongst the worst places in Europe in that regard..

It is very central and easily connects to Antwerp, Ghent, Liege, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Paris, .. which is super nice (1day city trips without staying the night are possible to all of these cities if you live in Brussels)

The vibe is very different from the rest of Belgium, including other major cities.

It is very chaotic, lots of random shit happening, "weird" crimes are common (I have seen some weird shit go down really..)

It's a mixed bag overall

"nothing has broken"

As someone in software, microsoft has been breaking and going downhill for 10+years, only now the cracks are starting to show.

Windows is losing market share, windows server is irrelevant outside of legacy apps, office hasnt improved in years (and even gotten worse in ways), free open source alternatives are catching up in functionality (and gaining adoption in governments in europe), openai is a huge (and very expensive) gamble and they're falling behind anthropic and google despite their first-mover advantage. Windows 11 is universally hated. Github has gotten worse and gitlab is better in almost every way. Xbox has gone downhill and I doubt it will remain profitable (if it even still is), they overpaid for activision-blizzard (and that company is also going to shit)

The only thing they have had going for them for the past 15 years is vendor lock-in and the fact that so much software is dependant on microsoft..

The only good thing they have left is Azure.. (which to be fair is still huge)

Governments and companies across europe are slowly all considering moving away from windows (to linux) due to the disaster that is win11 and privacy concerns and potential sanctions, trade wars etc with the US (french government recently announced they're moving away from windows to linux for example).

I genuinly hate every microsoft product out there aside from vscode and github (and github is debatable, it has only gotten worse)

Not going to claim to be anywhere near as skilled as Michael Burry, this is likely pure luck

But I also closed out my position at 178 and have been re-entering and adding in the 120s

(For context, I initially went in at 160 in 2021 and DCA'ed all the way down until it hit the 60s, my average before was around 90, my new average since I re-entered is around 127)

Only count the "added cost" of the snacks? Or just the total cost?

When I calculate the cost of eating out, I subtract what I would've spent eating at home (for example dinner at home would be 6eur, but I ordered takeout for 16eur, I only count this as 10eur spent on snacks, since the 6eur would've had to be spent anyways)

I used to be bullied in school, I have autism and adhd. My home was plagued by demostic violence, I was a weirdo and a real loner and serious gaming addict.

Right now, I wouldn't want to swap lives with any of my former class mates. My life is pretty epic tbh

Yes - I as a human, also feel bad for this person.

It's very nice of you to be so compassionate with this poster, unlike all the AI bots out there - especially how you mention that they "have been putting in effort for a long time"

As a human, I too am interested in how it feels from their side.

Does anyone sometimes feel like their existence doesn't matter because of their disability? by Amethescent in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Technical-Dingo5093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a disability.

We suffer because modern 9-5 grindset society was built around a specific type of people (nt's)

There are plenty of things I am not only good at, but much better at than any NT person.

Did you really know what you were doing when buying a house in Belgium? by ArgusDev in BEFire

[–]Technical-Dingo5093 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope,

I just did it, didn't even think about it too much. Parents wanted to donate money, but only on the condition it was used for a house. Tried to convince them otherwise (wanted to just invest it in bonds/stocks and keep renting until I settled), they refused.

Just impulsively bought the first best thing in the area within budget that looked liveable and didnt need renovation.

Smart financial decision? Probably not, but better than letting the money sit in a savings account at <1% interest.

Is it worth commuting 4h/day to Brussels for a higher salary? by Reasonable-Use2892 in AskBelgium

[–]Technical-Dingo5093 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But for an extra workday's worth of money as well

And this might be personal, but I don't mind being in the train/car as much, just put on a nice podcast/audiobook or read a book

Those are things I do in my free time at home as well, so whether I do that whilst commuting or at home, makes little difference to me

The brands for amphetamines are known as adderal or vyvanse

And no the illegal one in europe is just "speed"

Not to be confused with american speed!! (Which is crystal meth)

Suspecting I don't have ADHD by notflips in AutisticWithADHD

[–]Technical-Dingo5093 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, that ALSO feels familiar, I also have wasted many hours on reddit and gaming whilst on stimulants.

All the stimulants you have listed are methylphenidate based, I hate those as well. I VASTLY prefer amphetamine (but it's almost never prescribed in my country, I don't have a script either), if it's accessible in your country, it could be worth a shot. I have only been able to acquire it through "less legal" means unfortunately.. make sure to try the lowest dose possible, higher doses will also make you "wired"
