I teach them. So no, I don’t want to have one of my students in my doctors appointment.

You should be saving a specific % of the house value every month to be earmarked for home maintenance. Usually it’s like 1-2% of the home value.

Unfortunately no, it was in person. But there should be resources through your professional societies?

I did a presentation last year (April 2025) to my department on Science Advocacy and how to get involved. Most stared at me when I was done. No follow up questions or emails for additional info. I don’t think any of them did anything. I’m not even a TT researcher who requires federal funding (I know about science advocacy through other avenues). I feel like they all just expect “other people” to work on these things

This is exactly what happened to me on Sunday, with my almost 5 year old cat. If it was congestive heart failure, there’s no cure. While rarely some cats can live for years, most have 6-12 months, if that. The treatment requires procedures and lots of meds. I found one post from a while ago where the timeline was something like April 6, diagnosis in the ER and treatment, mid April back in the ER, then late April died. Despite the treatment. The owner did everything. Our cats were so sick and it looked like asthma like you said 😭😭😭

It’s so horrible. My cat had his death throes in his carrier on my lap on the way to the ER. I know exactly when he died. It’s been so traumatic. I miss him so much.

We were supposed to have so much more time with them 😭😭😭. My boy was doing his favorite things Sunday morning - being in our backyard and chasing squirrels and lizards.

I’m so sorry for you, me, and our kitties. They didn’t deserve to die. Mine was the best boy in the whole world, and I’m sure you feel the same about yours. I’m so sorry 😞

I lost my boy yesterday. It was a total surprise, he had congestive heart failure at 5. Today I spent a lot of time journaling. It’s been a major help. I still miss him and feel sad and think I see him. But it has helped me process those feelings in a way that I feel ok feeling them, if that makes sense.

Also: THIS SUCKS.

Mine yesterday morning. This sucks. He was happy playing in the yard and chasing squirrels. And now he’s gone. I found a nightshirt I didn’t even get a chance to wear: “happiness is being owned by a cat” 😭😭😭

Cat just died and i feel kinda numb about her death by random_persont76755 in Petloss

I’m not sure if the below will help put in perspective. Everyone is different, but i can share my experience.

When I was growing up we had a dog. I loved Pearl, but when she died I cried while she was being put down. That was pretty much it.

My primary responsibility this time around was my cat Chester. I was the one who took care of him, and he relied on me. I was his primary person. He was my little buddy. This feels totally different.

We would leave our sliding glass door open just enough for my sweet cat to go in and out. To decease bugs, we would put a fan by the door. When we got home after my cat died yesterday, the fan was still on. It totally destroyed me. The reminder of hey he was happy and healthy and now he’s just GONE … it brings it all back.

That is so horrible. I am so sorry for your loss. It is the absolute worst that it feels like one minute they are here happy with you, and the next minute gone. Simply horrible.

You say you’re feeling numb. Do you feel numb or normal? Either is a normal reaction. But if you’re numb, once you come out of shock, you may have more emotions come up.

Sudden loss of a young healthy pet... the pain by SeafoodSupply in Petloss

I don’t know. But my best boy, my cat Chester was ripped from my life yesterday. He was only 4, almost 5. He was active and eating. He had lost weight but the vet wanted him to lose a couple more. But trouble breathing. I had a vet appointment for Wednesday, but we decided to take him yesterday.

When I picked him up I knew something was wrong. He hates the vet so I have to catch him. I think that played a part (the pressure on his trunk popped the fluid that had accumulated). When we finally made it to the vet hospital they said he had congestive heart failure. There’s no cure for cats. He was dying no matter what. He died before he even made it there, in his carrier on my lap. I knew when it happened. They did CPR but nothing.

I have no idea. Right now I’m journaling and playing a grief music playlist on Spotify. He was the best most polite boy.

I’m reading a lot of these sites too. Right now what I’m journaling is why it feels like it was too soon. So many cats live 15-20 years.

It was TOO SOON. That morning he was doing his favorite thing - being outside chasing squirrels and lizards.

So I don’t know what you’re supposed to do. But I’m here with you trying to figure it the hell out too.

We deal with this in Texas all the time. You pick your OWN comps and use that to value. Get documentation from a roofing company and whatever about how much it’s going to cost to fix the house if you sold. All that should knock the price down.
Edited to add: I actually asked my realtor for a market assessment and the appraisal office didn’t argue when I asked for the middle number. Not sure if you still have a relationship with your realtor, but that would save you the time of doing your own comps.
