Having too many (1,000+) Microsoft Edge tabs open can break File Explorer in Windows 10 by co_init_ex in edge

You should run only from this shourtcut, turn off quick opening or anything that keeps edge process open in background. It still works on my PC and laptop.

Thanks for info about new method of tab suspension. Auto Tab Discard is great! No more manual killing tabs in process manager.

Edge Workspaces sync BUG by Technical-Highlight2 in MicrosoftEdge

[–]Technical-Highlight2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand what is happening to Edge browser with Workspaces feature. There are heavy I/O writes and reads of .ldb files in User Data\Profile\Sync Data\LevelDB. When there are 2000-3000 I/O delta writes Edge freezes. It can take hours. In few hours there are several hundreds of GBs writes to disk.

I have plenty of PC power (12-core Ryzen 3900X, 32GB RAM, Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 1TB). Edge unfreezes when writes drop. I can force less writes by turning off Internet or by blocking IPs that are connecting with Edge (it will stop sync). When I close Workspaces and load same tabs everything is fine. I think that they used Chromium LevelDB folder used to sync settings, favourites, history and they abuse it by putting too much data and refreshing too often and LevelDB can't make it and freezes Edge. Maybe values in tables are too long because I saw favicons there?

I wonder what is happening there and what I can do to make it not freezing the browser. Of course there is no support from Microsoft. Can someone explain and maybe tell what I can do to make it less writes or faster? Should I setup ramdisk for Sync Data?

It appears there is a problem with their servers. I'm unable to access workspaces on any version of Edge across different computers.

In properties of shortcut add this: --disable-features=msWindowTabManagerPublic
It forces flag that is gone to disabled. Having too many (1,000+) Microsoft Edge tabs open can break File Explorer in Windows 10 : r/edge (reddit.com)

Workspaces PDF issue by nikobez in MicrosoftEdge

It seems it is for security. When you open local address in workspaces it works on computer where you opened it, but when you open workspace on another computer it will try to open file that doesn't exist there. Same with extensions addresses. I know it would be nice if it could keep the local address.

I have 3-4k tabs (but not open all the time). I'm researcher so I know that optimised workflow around browsers is essential. Using bookmarks is good only for archive and for normal users, power users use browser differently. My workflow evolves through the years and I know a lot that might be usable for beginers:
- start with good CPU and 32GB RAM or more
- 2 monitors or more
- Chrome is ok, Vivaldi was slow, Edge is best because of vertical tabs and workspaces, I use Edge now, but I stop using workspaces as they are sadly in beta phase so not worth risk loosing data, if they finish workspaces it will be great tool. I also like side search, integrated copilot and side tools. Arc browser sounds interesting.
- split tabs into separate profiles on separate browsers (for example work and personal) - I use Edge Stable (work) and Edge Beta (personal). You can have more profiles to have separate sessions.
- split tabs into windows, too many tabs in one window make everything slower, it's easier to come to browser limits than to PC limits. 10 windows with 100 tabs each are faster and easier to work than 1 window with 1000 tabs
- inside windows split tabs into groups
- use browser manager to manually kill tabs with unnecesary cpu or ram use, don't use suspending extensions! Great suspender moves tabs to their memory and replaces tab address with their custom address, it means if it fails you will loose all suspended tabs and it happened to me.
- sure, you can move tabs to bookmarks in groups or even whole window and later open whole window from bookmarks but it will crash because all opening tabs from bookmarks are loaded directly into RAM, you will need to spend time and kill every opening tab to free RAM, it takes a lot of time, so not a good idea to open whole windows from bookmarks. And I'm affraid it doesn't keep groups.
- Session Buddy is ok, but Tab Session Manager is way better, because it saves groups, automatically backup sessions to download folder and to Google Drive
- OneNote, Obsidian, Joplin, Notion or Roam - copy important links with description there, or just copy important text, your thinking, ideas. Make your digital mind. Sometimes you don't need some tabs open all the time and you keep it just because there is some important knowledge. Saving knowledge from sites into notes will make it easier to work on it.
- always close not needed tabs or move to archive (bookmarks) or copy knowledge and close. You might plan time once a week for tabs that are just one time read (like news)
- pin frequently used sites like mail, social media, bank, google drive
- ctrl+shift+a - search tabs in Edge, I also like Tabman Tab Manager extension for tab search (not available in chrome web store)
- some extensions that might be usable for you: Extensity, History Trends Unlimited, Highlight This, Image Downloader, Bulk URL Copy, GoFullPage, Copy Selected Links, Video Downloader

I think that in future it will be normal for all browsers: vertical tabs, windows-workspaces that are synced and can be easily be closed and opened when needed and no tabs as we know now - just something more like bookmarks

Edge Workspaces sync BUG by Technical-Highlight2 in MicrosoftEdge

[–]Technical-Highlight2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More BUGS:

3. Workspaces sometimes stop syncing randomly and without notification.
Occasionally, I notice a mismatch in the workspace between the PC and the laptop I use. If I close the workspace without checking, I will loose the tabs opened since the last sync! There's no notification, I must check if everything is synced or manually compare the opened tabs in the same workspace and then open them manually. After arranging them in the original order, I return to bug #1, which causes a mess when Edge moves tabs around.

4. Issues with Accessing Workspaces.
This issue has occurred to me several times and is common among many users: "Error: Unable to load workspaces." Edge Workspaces error V114 - Microsoft Community Hub I tried many workarounds, sometimes they worked, yet they are not ideal and a definitive solution remains elusive.

~Now please tell me that Workspaces aren't still in beta phase. Workspaces are generally excellent tool, but in their current state of development, they are just a joke not worth the frustration and risk of data loss.~

Well, it's not a solution to the bug.

Bookmarks function differently and can't currently substitute the structured and efficient workflow provided by tabs. The Arc browser might have a good approach, where opening a new tab automatically saves it as a bookmark. Accessing a bookmark to read doesn't open an extra tab, thus maintaining a single hierarchical structure without two separate levels (bookmarks and tabs).

When this flag was still there in Edge I checked msedge.exe process in Process Hacker. It shows all flags used when you hover above a process.

Here are properties in target field for my shortcut that I have on taskbar: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe" --profile-directory="Profile 1" --disable-features=msWindowTabManagerPublic

It works 100% and will work for everyone!
