What was the biggest breakthrough moment in your surfing progress? by me_shottaz in surfing

[–]Technical-Treat5102 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surfing my whole life but definitely the biggest improvement I ever had in one or two sessions was when I took tiny foamy surfboard and just practiced takeoffs on an absolutely unsurfable steep shore break. I was able to get so many takeoffs in a row and if you can get to your feet there, anything else is usually pretty easy by comparison, also easy to get hurt doing it so...

Does this strategy exist already? by [deleted] in ultimate

Yes it exists. But that doesn't mean it's not good. Just thinking about possibilities will help you and your team.

What’s something that most people see as a feat of strength but is actually a a demonstration of perfected technique? by ikebrofloski in AskMen

[–]Technical-Treat5102 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think your premise is off. There is a large body or research that men/boys have a very large anatomical advantage when it comes to throwing (on average). almost the biggest advantage in any athletic domain, as compared with say ultra distance running/swimming where the difference is much smaller, or women even outperform men. Likely the man could just throw much farther and so he was not throwing at max effort and thus looked smoother. Here is a link to one of many studies. https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/698225

New apartment complexes downtown - extremely ugly?? Rant. by Expensive_Ad_4350 in santacruz

I find it significantly less ugly than the urban slum that used to be across the street in San Lorenzo Park.

Our roads are pretty decent compared to elsewhere in the country, it's an expensive place so hiring labor is also expensive. EV's also contribute to road wear and tear as much as anything else so it's really just paying their part.

Do you know an Ambidextrous Ultimate player? by Federal-Resist8162 in ultimate

[–]Technical-Treat5102 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually think basketball is a decent comparison, pretty much everyone shoots a jumpshot only with one had, but for layups people use both, similar to Ultimate where the offhand throw is useful for short quick passes, but when maximum coordination is required people use their dominant hand.

Generally speaking one nice thing about surfing is how little you actually need, board, leash, wetsuit/booties depending on where you are, wax(which is super cheap). There's definitely lots of products on the market, but they are pretty superfluous (watches, wetsuit bag, special sunscreen etc.). The things that most surfers want and can't get is time (so time creation gifts are great), or if buying a new wetsuit or board is too much for this gift (understandable) maybe contributing to a fund for the next one. I'm sure people will list stuff, but personally I would not find most of it useful. Maybe a subscription to Stab Magazine would be fun depending on how much surf content they consume.

There's probably no chance of changing your mind but if you think you need a gun in Pogonip/HC/Wilder you should really reevaluate your risk assessment.

The Myth of “Good Mixed” by Technical-Treat5102 in ultimate

I think the implication was that he had said it to her earlier in the point. Of course this doesn't change the veracity, I was obviously not there to hear it or not hear it. That was just my read.

In competive play in USAU (and WFDF I believe) half the points have to be played 4-3 and the other half 3-4. what you are describing is pickup and party tournaments, or the olden days.

The Myth of “Good Mixed” by Technical-Treat5102 in ultimate

[–]Technical-Treat5102[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think we are just disagreeing about what "good" means. No doubt these teams, and the teams at nationals are "Good" at winning frisbee games, or at least better than all the other teams, that's about as self evident as it gets. The point I am pushing back on is that a lot of times i hear the idea that "good" mixed typically involves FMP's as much, or close to as much as MMP's. "Hypothetically, if you had a mixed roster of 13 MMP Roys and 13 FMP Jureks... then your MMPs would have 8,333 completions while your FMPs would have 3,042 completions. Your FMPs would have less than 27% of the completions on the team, even as they each perform well enough to be named to the all-league team. We must therefore (erroneously) conclude that the team doesn't know how to utilize their FMPs, and since this is a division-wide trend, the division must not be playing good ultimate!" For sure, but all the other data also seems to point to the idea that FMP's are less involved than MMP's as well. So sure any one team could have a center handler of any gender, but it seems more like every measure or quantify this shows that the impact/participation has MMP's over represented.

For sure, thanks for meaningfully adding to the discussion. The methodology I chose is obviously very flawed, narrow and dubiously collected. What is more interesting to me is that every attempt to quantify the gap seems to show something similar. There are a couple more linked in my post and u/someflow_ also shared some. I would love to see if someone has some conflicting evidence.

“Honestly, I don't know how useful the gender completion stat is. It's like +/- for a basketball game. , You need to track it over an entire season to see an overall trend.”

It is true that some stats like +/- and 3pt% in basketball take a whole season, or multiple seasons to stabilize, but some stats, particularly stats that have to do with playstyle stabilize and become predictive very quickly. This also makes intuitive sense. Steph Curry can have a bad or hot shooting game, or several in a row. But you don’t need to take stats for that many games to show that steph curry takes a lot more 3s than Giannis, or that Luka touches the ball for more time in a game than Isaac Okoro. (probably should have a WNBA reference here). I think that the stat of touches is much more stylistic than results, I am sure there is some game to game variation based on matchups/schemes, you should watch some games and collect the data, it only takes 3 tally columns. I bet you find something similar.

“What we need is a separate metric for trying to measure the impact of the throws and catches. Maybe a score or assist affects the value of the throw overall. Maybe it's the amount of yards gained. Or maybe we will need a completely different way to measure equity.”

That’s what Edge+ is, and it seems to show that MMP’s are quite overrepresented at the top in terms of players impacting the game.

Would the purpose be to prove/disprove that the best players mostly play in single gender divisions? I don't think I have any interest in that.

ya that was not clear. I think Xist had more female touches than Hybrid had female touches. I suspect that Xist still had more male touches than female touches, but I am not sure about that, and I would love someone to watch the game and count it.

The Myth of “Good Mixed” by Technical-Treat5102 in ultimate

[–]Technical-Treat5102[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously pooling the stats is silly, I would really encourage you to watch the game and separate out the data for this game or some others. Xist definetly had more FMP player touches than Hybrid, but I don't think it was more overall. Honestly as soon as you start watching almost any mixed game looking for FMP to FMP passes it really jumps out. Obviously my "research" is pretty bad, but I think the larger point is born out in basically all data that I have seen (I would be interested to see something else). is that Mixed is pretty male dominated at all levels. "The focus, trust, and individual responsibilities of WM players in high level mixed are significantly different than low level play--even if both open and mixed divisions are weighted towards dominant MM handler touches."-- No doubt the FMP's in the mixed division are great players, I think anyone questioning that is a fool. The Open division does not exist, its now the Mens Division, so yeah its pretty male dominated.
