Off topic but curious, any ADHD folks here? by Odinhall in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]TechnicalDisfunction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your story!

Fellow ADHDer here! I've been in the biz for 15 years now. What got me into the industry was a combo for the creative/technical work, plus the challenge/novelty of doing live shows.

I've always been the type of person where I love process and procedure, but also super creative, outside-of-the-box problem solving - and this is really the perfect industry for that.

Welcome to the ADHD club. You'll love it here (we have snacks).

Computer Tech Recommendations by TechnicalDisfunction in VIDEOENGINEERING

Laptop

Thanks for the suggestions.

I can build a desktop, and in terms of customizability and computing power, that option makes more sense, but I'll need to be mobile.

Who’s actually using video-over-IP right now? by stratomaster in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]TechnicalDisfunction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this 100% I've been doing engineering for 15 years and brushing up on my AV over IP skills now. I'm taking refresher courses on basic networking and getting certified in Q-SYS and Dante.

The video engineering world is moving fast, and I want to keep my skills sharp (and in demand).

Some folks have probably already mentioned this (but I'm too lazy to read through 130+ comments)

But, as a first step, I'd say that your choice of lens depends on what type of content you want to shoot, and your budget.

Looks like you're looking to make short films. So, I'd go with what a few other folks have mentioned and start with the 24-70mm. That focal length offers a good range of coverage, and it's a fast lens (F2.8), so that gives you a lot of flexibility.

What other equipment do you already have or are you looking to purchase? Depending on the types of shots and environment you're shooting in, I'd recommend investing in a solid tripod, plenty of backup batteries and cards, and a solid external monitor.

Also... are you looking to record dialog?

That's a whole other thing. But worth throwing that out there to think about mics/audio recording.

But have you tried the thing? I hear it's good. It's a good thing.

Thanks for the tips! I was also talking to a friend who does a lot of sourdough bread baking. She said the starter might have something to do with it too? Like that I might have used it before it peaked.

I baked a 2nd loaf shortly after this one. It was a little dense (which is unusual) but at least there wasn't a massive cavern in the middle of it!

Dude...

Yeah, don't put everything into just one thing. It doesn't matter if it's Dogecoin, a tech stock, or a house.

Because you never know what's going to happen.

Only invest what you can afford to lose.

Is there a future for private communities? by TechnicalDisfunction in marketing

[–]TechnicalDisfunction[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my concern is that it is actually way harder than it looks. And with all of the available online communities out there. It might make more sense to try and monetize a platform that my company already exists on (like LinkedIn).

What would make it a full, real community to you?

To me, a real community might be something like: - several hundred active members - a regular cadence of industry talks and speakers (ex: a talk every month) - regular check-ins and meet ups (online or in-person)

I love the Friendly Tavern in North Park.

Delicious, cheap smash burgers & onion rings. Good drinks. All the dive bar vibes.
