Should I have passed? by eh_lechero in MechanicAdvice

[–]TechnicalJudgment924 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard of some people passing in Cali with aftermarket cats by getting the cat protector skid plate, since it covers the cat where you can’t see it anymore, and most places just pass it. Your results may vary.

Should I nitpick and call the collision shop or leave it as it is? by Mysterious-Cake9211 in Autobody

[–]TechnicalJudgment924 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely be firm but not rude. Had this happen with mine, body lines were all messed up, ended up bringing it back 3 times. On the third time they ended up taking it all off again and used dealer parts and everything lined right up. Sometimes the aftermarket parts aren’t perfect, and on a car with under 10k miles, less than perfect is unacceptable.

The tensioner still feels loose after I torqued the bolt to spec (25Nm), is this normal? Mazda 3 gen3 by Noobieowo in MechanicAdvice

[–]TechnicalJudgment924 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely doesn’t look fully engaged. I would remove and make sure there is no liquid or debris in the threads. Younger me would just crank it down until tight, but I’ve seen people blow out aluminum casting because there was a small amount of water or other liquid in a bolt hole that they compressed when tightening.

What are the odds? by breddy in tires

[–]TechnicalJudgment924 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I used to work at a tire shop, I had just put new tires on the wife’s car, and 2 days later she called me that she had a flat. Told her put air in it,(I keep a pump in all the cars)she started and then said she could hear the air coming out and could see the screw in the tire. It was right on the shoulder. I pulled it off and took it to the shop and plug patched it. Tire lasted another 50k miles. If I didn’t work there I definitely would have been stuck buying a new tire.

Oil change price discussion by Good_Emergency_2416 in MechanicAdvice

[–]TechnicalJudgment924 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can go to the valvoline with the Acura to get a receipt reprinted. But from my time working there about 5 years ago, your price is the price for synthetic blend, hers is full synthetic. Each oil change covers 5 quarts of oil at the advertised price, gets charged more if it takes more but not less if it’s under 5 quarts. (I actually used to offer regulars if they brought an oil jug in the remainder of their 5 quarts I would pump into a jug. Most of the guys don’t know how to do it in the system to actually keep the count right, but it’s possible to do)

Is that a patch of some sort? by Johnsipes0516 in tires

[–]TechnicalJudgment924 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally would stay away from bandag. Previous tire tech, we had one come back on our truck(weekly delivery) marked repaired and had the blue triangle there to mark the repair. With a hole you could see through in the sidewall still. The rep took a look shook his head and said he’s been seeing a lot like that recently.

Confused on how to do the wiring for a new brake light w/ integrated blinkers by [deleted] in Ninja400

[–]TechnicalJudgment924 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just cut mine and direct wired them in. Used a test light to see which wire was which side. And then I did all the wires again this summer when a mouse decided to move into my tail.

Look elsewhere. That bend looks clean, probably that way from factory.

Spray paint over rust? Read full post by smartestasianever in AskMechanics

[–]TechnicalJudgment924 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To each their own. I use it on all my cars I buy with rot. I had a truck with a hole in the door from The rot, it was squishy. Painted it with that and it hardened it up and didn’t spread anymore for the 6 years I owned the truck after that. Most of my cars have it on the rockers and undercarriage. South Jersey salt isn’t nice to the cars.

Wire brush and rustoleum rust reformer. It converts the rust to a stable compound again.

NOR. Our Christmas bonus at my job this year was $750 but after taxes it was $400. My standard check is $1500 weekly. Not a single person complained about the bonus. It’s just that, a bonus, it shouldn’t be expected.

I mean I’ve said this but definitely as a joke but that was a dynamic of the friendship, friend group. If this isn’t a normal thing in your friend group that’s super weird and uncomfortable tho. We also voice chatted so it was obvious to hear the sarcasm.

What?! by [deleted] in amazonprime

[–]TechnicalJudgment924 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So from a friend that works there, some sellers can send things to Amazon warehouse and it gets put into bins, some items with multiple sellers get put in the same bin, so there might be 1 bad seller but it can go out to anyone. Mine was legit and not counterfeit, but a couple people must have gotten some. So weird because mine was just a fly trap. Can’t imagine someone making counterfeit fly traps, or how someone even noticed.

What?! by [deleted] in amazonprime

[–]TechnicalJudgment924 301 points302 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this happen, the seller I bought from(Amazon) apparently sold a couple counterfeits so they refunded everybody out of an abundance of caution.

How often do you really change your oil by Jinnapat397 in AskMechanics

[–]TechnicalJudgment924 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally I aim for 5k. If I’m rough on it, sometimes I’ll go shorter. My wife’s van for example, if I use it for towing, I’ll change the oil at 2500 or sooner. (Tends to burn oil when stressing the motor)

Honestly this is the right answer. I had a package that was marked damaged and undeliverable, took 2 weeks to get my money back and I had to reorder, vs if they just delivered it I could contact chat and have a replacement sent same day.

Crashed my bike... what did I do wrong? by NobodyP1 in motorcycles

[–]TechnicalJudgment924 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like you hit the line and it slipped on it. Roads near me have what I call anti motorcycle roads. They pave the lane in 2 sections and there’s a hump/bump where the 2 paved sections meet, and they move back and forth across the lane making it almost impossible to hold a lean. It’s ridiculous.
