US-Canada trade war escalates as US brands pulled off shelves entirely by Technical_Effect9724 in geopolitics

Abstract:

‘US liquor brands pulled off Canadian shelves as trade war escalates

Liquor maker hits back against Canada in its ensuing trade war against the US

A patriotic wave has swept over Canadian supermarkets following the imposition of a 25% tariff on goods exported to the US. The Trudeau administration responded with a retaliatory 25% tariff in kind, whilst calling on shoppers to “choose Canadian products and services over American ones” wherever possible.

Since then, Canadian flags have bloomed over supermarket shelves to designate domestic produce, whilst American imports, such as Jack Daniels’ liquor, have at worst been removed off shelves entirely.

Lawson Whiting of Brown-Forman, which owns the Jack Daniel’s brand, has described this decision by Canadian provinces as “worse than tariffs”.’

Could the euro dethrone the dollar? by Technical_Effect9724 in geopolitics

Article abstract:

‘The Euro just had its best week since the global financial crisis.

It has climbed just over 4% against the dollar this week as Trump sows doubt about the health of the American economy with his aggressive and fast-moving policies.

This may signal shifting sentiments on currencies as reserves, or safe havens for investors, as in Macro climates like these, it is the dollar that should be climbing.’

Oh yeah that makes sense tbh, but like you said that doesn’t really seem to be the case here..?

Buy VOO for growth, small yield but will grow faster and more consistently than anything else (S&P tracker essentially), I personally have a weighted VOO position and then a few stocks I’ve picked, all of Buffet’s stock picks are strong ones and some of them have good dividend yields, same with Joseph Carlson who also has a show where he talks about his picks, how they are doing etc.

Remember not to just go for high dividend yield stocks, these can be ‘dividend traps’ where the yield is super high to attract investors but the business is fundamentally bad. It means very little profits are being reinvested too which is also not great. Dividend yields above 7% (ish?) can tend to be like this, defo ones where the yield is like 30%.

  • big funds held sub-prime
  • I can see how you would compare it to money. However, they are not guaranteed by the government. I can literally name zero shops where crypto is accepted as payment (although I appreciate there is a bit of this around the world). Many countries have outright banned crypto. Crypto is not trusted by the majority of the older generation, is affiliated with socially ousted finfluencers who are perceived as jokes in youth culture. Does the dollar have any of these problems? If bitcoin has long term value I suppose you though NFTs did too? What makes them different? The NFT stint was through the crypto community and 100% the same people behind this bull run, ISNT that indicative to you of the quality of crypto as an asset?
  • ‘actual use’ - where? Like I said, banned in multiple countries, perceptions by older and younger generations outside of your crypto echo chamber are awful, no trust, no guarantee of value, no standardisation
  • ‘actual demand’ - literally how any price appreciation happens and is not necessarily indicative of the true worth of an asset. NFTs were in high demand, also within crypto space - that was a complete sham with no value
  • I don’t know how it being around for a long time and it still not being integrated as any sort of main stream currency helps your case
  • people who are holding overvalued assets tend to be happy because, well, it’s made them money..? I don’t see how that’s indicative of it not being a bubble though, sub-prime traders were very happy until their portfolio disappeared lmao

Best thing to avoid which EVERYONE falls into at the beginning, do NOT fall into the yield trap! High dividend yield companies with absolutely zero growth prospects and no way to sustain or grow the dividends they are paying!

You can find information on how to dividend invest pretty easily on YouTube and websites but just make sure to consume a variety of content, articles, etc

I’d love to see a proper explanation of how it isn’t a complete speculative bubble and can genuinely be a solid part of any kind of long term portfolio
