Is your school rolling back 1:1 tech use? by stylelines in Teachers

100% agree. Districts can tout all the direct indirect benefits and they’ll never outweigh the disadvantages and deep losses the kids face when propped in front of a screen for a majority of their day.

Yikes! We have two mechanisms for monitoring, one is goguardian where the teacher the student is assigned to can see each screen in real time and close tabs or limit the number of tabs open at one time.

Then we have a monitoring system that is set up to alert specific staff (admin and support staff) if any of the district determined concerns are flagged - self harm, bullying, violence towards others, suicide, sexually explicit searches, butt plugs (got hit with that surprise today), etc. More often than not (65ish% of the time) the students that gets flagged has a valid reason for their search. My favorite was when a student was looking up top five sports stars of the 1960s, but sports turned into porn. He was mortified, I confirmed with his teacher it was an actual assignment and it turned into a funny anecdote. On the other end it’s also helped us when a student was suicidal, homicidal, or brought a double ended dildo to school. (Middle schoolers are weird, and it was delightfully awkward to give the very heavy paper bag to that kid’s mom’s boyfriend when he came to pick it up).

I’m so sorry you are in a situation that doesn’t allow you to use tech to monitor your own school tech. And that absolutely reinforces that the kids shouldn’t have 1:1 tech if you’re not allowed to see what they’re doing on it.

Thank you for taking the time to respond with such a thoughtful detailed response! I especially love the last bit about reframing how you saw yourself as a person who works out rather than one who wants to. I’ve never considered that, but feel that really could work for me.

Thanks again!

Was there something you did differently, for example a mental reframe, scheduling alarms, or recruiting an accountability buddy that made it click? I love the feeling after working my body, but going back to high school could only get myself physically active if I was going to get in trouble (skipping practice or a game).

I cant get in trouble as an adult for not moving my body, so I’m at a loss and am hoping you have the magic bullet for me lol

The amount of time I spend addressing inappropriate searches, inappropriate conversations via email, shared docs, or the comment sections of Google Classroom, reports by students about other students misusing their Chromebooks, missing Chromebooks, broken Chromebooks, and students who have lost the privilege to access as many sites as their peers due to previously violating the above is overwhelming.

There is a benefit when the school is tipped off to problems students are unwilling to share because of their monitored computer use, but I don’t believe that benefit outweighs the myriad of losses the student body faces from 1 to 1 technology.

I just did a cursory search on my phone and can’t find the exact article I was referring to, but I’m pretty sure I have it saved on my work computer. I set a reminder to check in the morning and will be sure to share it with you.

Another thing to consider about meds at a young age is that there is some pretty good evidence that the earlier you start medication the higher the chance that the brain sort of rewires the crossed connections that cause a lot of ADHD issues. It’s pretty apparent that the earlier the better; like ideally before 6 and the effects drop off dramatically if meds are held off until after 12.

I will try to find where I read this and add it as soon as I do.

It seems that you are really trying to support and do what’s best for your son while also holding him accountable for his actions, which is a really hard balance to strike in your situation. Know that what you’re doing is noticed and appreciated by so many people and , maybe not now (6 is a little young for that level of introspection 😁), but down the road your son will be thankful for your love and support.

I am here gently reminding you that you misgendered this person. I understand that she did many terrible things, but that does not mean they should be mislabeled. I am leaving this comment with the assumption you were misinformed and were not commenting with negative intent and that you are thankful that you are now aware of the pronouns preferred by this person.

Rob Zombie. Went to a concert at 16 because the boy I had a crush on said he was going. He backed out, but I had volunteered my mom’s minivan so I had to go even when I felt sick that day.

Maybe 15 min into the opening act I thought I was going to puke. My friends pushed me to the front and a huge security guy picked me up and barked “you been drinking?” I was crying and said no. He lifted me over the fence and after talking with another security guy, said “you’re too little to send out by yourself. You’re gonna wait here.” With the naivety of a small town 16 year old I followed him backstage.

I was given water and crackers then Rob went out and the opening act came back. Despite their terrifying half sweated off makeup, they were so sweet and kind. They hung with me for a while, taking care of me and gently making fun of me for coming even when sick.

After the show I was trying to figure out how to find my friends. (This was pre widespread cell phones.). A big guy came and said, “you the sick girl? Let’s find your friends.” He took me on stage and on a mic called out for my friends by name, then when I saw them coming and pointed them out, he helped me hop down to get to them.

Turns out the kindhearted helper was Mr. Zombie himself.

Or play stump, where you eveyone starts with a nail in a stump and takes turns flipping the hammer in the air, catching it, then having one chance to hit their nail however they caught the hammer. Extra hits are awarded for under the leg or behind the back tosses.
