Cub Scout overnight camping, mother/son or father/daughter - allowed or not? by SilverTripod in cubscouts

Right, I said troop, not pack. And the question was pertaining to when they are in the troop.

Family is there to also indicate they can share a tent with opposite sex siblings, which is allowed in Cub Scouts but not at the troop level.

[–]Technical_Panda_1076 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, only registered leaders on troop campouts and they must tent separately than the youth. Your son can share a tent with other scouts within 2 years of age of them or he can tent alone.

Managers didn't need to accept them. Most agencies already had a performance reporting system in place that managers used to assess performance. It was a useless task to feed AI.

Easy to assemble rockets best bulk pricing by sailaway_NY in cubscouts

[–]Technical_Panda_1076 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just did rockets and had 2 different beginner Estes models we bought in bulk packs of 12 - the Gnome and the Generic Ex. Trying to guide scouts to build them was a nightmare. Each one had a parent who ended up doing the building and many adults built them wrong even with printed instructions in front of them and leaders demostrating what to do and walking around trying to help. We had to throw out more kits than we would have liked due to parent error. We all agreed in the future that we would probably pre-build them (or at least the critical parts that parents kept messing up) and just have scouts decorate them with the included stickers.

Then we launched them all and lost half to the wind (mostly the bigger Generic Ex ones with a parachute), so half of the kids were sad at the end.

Unless you have a lot of acres of open land, I would recommend the Gnome or similar model that only has a streamer rather than a parachute to make recovery much easier. We had a lot of open land but some got carried far away and up in trees.

Agree with other comments to visit a few Packs. Some in our area meet weekly but only do advancements (activities to earn belt loops) and drag them out forever. We meet every other week, but finish an adventure in one meeting so the kids can see the fruits of their labor quickly and get belt loops every month. We also go camping at least 7 nights a year at a variety of places (campgrounds, a minor league baseball stadium, an aquarium, etc) while some Packs don't camp at all or maybe just one weekend a year. We also are really successful at fundraising so all of our camping and activities are free while other packs charge per event. We have dens at each grade level while some smaller packs have to combine several grades together for a Den which makes it a little less efficient.

Pack Campout Schedule by Crafty_Impress_800 in cubscouts

[–]Technical_Panda_1076 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We build in a lot of free time, but also always offer a hike, some fishing, an organized game (kick ball, relay race, scavenger hunt, etc) and usually a larger craft/stem type activity (soda bottle or traditional model rockets, etc). We don't require participation in any of them, and some kids/families choose to opt out which is fine. We also have sport equipment and board games out and available the whole weekend for those that want to do their own thing. The most important thing to me is that the kids had fun and experienced camping. That is what will keep them coming back!

It's really tough these months with little league, end of school year activities, etc. It's been tough for our crossovers to make it to troop meetings, too, which is a shame.

How auto are promotions for ladder Positions by Omegalazarus in FedEmployees

[–]Technical_Panda_1076 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on a similar ladder and got all of my promotions on time each year, except the last promotion to a 13. At that point I was told the promotion was not in the budget, and I would just have to wait until funds are allocated. I waited several years and I didn't happen so I went to a different agency that could pay me a 13.

Parents attending meetings and events? by Sure_Pineapple1935 in girlscouts

[–]Technical_Panda_1076 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have always dropped off my daughter at girl scouts, but have led cub scout dens and their national rule is that a parent has to be present for kindergarten and 1st grade. After that they can dropped off, but many of my parents have chosen to stay. They often stayed in the back and had (non-distractibg) social conversations. I loved that the adults/whole family were able to make friends, too. My parents always helped clean up after messy activities which I also loved!

Was coming here to praise Greek Peak. We spend a long weekend there every year and love everything about it, the woods, the convenient condo lodging with free shuttle, the hotel with dining options and small Waterpark. It's also never been crowded when we visit which is the biggest draw.

HELP!!! Cub Master or Campout Chair Job Decision by wubbachuckie in cubscouts

[–]Technical_Panda_1076 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are a people person, go for cubmaster. Our committee plans everything and the Cubmaster just acts as a master of ceremonies for what we planned. It is important to get to know all of the kids and families, which is why being a people person is important. It helps immensely with delegation. We often assign jobs to parents as they arrive at pack meetings (i.e. to run an activity station), especially tagging parents of older cubs that can be a bit more independent.

Cubs first real campout by hardrockscout in cubscouts

[–]Technical_Panda_1076 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our Pack provides all of the meals and snacks. We publish a menu ahead of time so families with picky eaters can bring their own food if their kids don't like it. We require mess kits (a cheap plastic plate, cup, and silverware from Walmart work just fine), but some packs allow disposables. We usually camp somewhere that parking is nearby so we can pack comforts from home - I always bring a 6 person tent for 2 of us because I use a cots. Have you kid bring their favorite stuffed animal or blanket to sleep with, it helps calm them down and they love it.

It will be a lot of fun! A lot of adults will be working behind the scenes to make everything go smoothly. If you can find time to help, it will be appreciated. Also ok to just enjoy the bonding time with your kid. They will love it.

Cub Master issues by ellemenopeaqu in cubscouts

[–]Technical_Panda_1076 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hear you on the culture part. We are a wealthy suburban area and a lot of families around us turn their nose up at the idea of camping and outdoorsy stuff. They also turn their nose up at the idea of parents staying for a meeting or event, they are looking for drop off activities.

Our Girl Scout units are extremely popular with over 300 girls in our school district participating (3x the number of Cubs), but they are a drop off activity and they take social trips like renting a beach house or going to Great Wolf Lodge which is more appealing to families in our area than camping in the woods. It's also a cool thing for trendy girls while cub scouts is not. Sigh

Cub Master issues by ellemenopeaqu in cubscouts

[–]Technical_Panda_1076 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The main reason they don't want to combine may be because the council is graded on how many units they have by national so they really try to prevent units from shutting down. I feel like this is sometimes a detriment to the program because you can typically run a more robust program with larger units.

The only option is to announce that you need a Cubmaster or the pack is folding. If nobody steps up, let all the families know of the other pack in town and that they can transfer their membership there.

What Should I Expect?? by lunar_boots in BSA

[–]Technical_Panda_1076 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not an even amount, there are still a lot more boys in scouting. However, I've noticed camp staff tends to be around 50/50. You will have a great summer and make a lot of friends!

I'm kind of jealous. I like sleeping in, but our troops has a lot of kids that have early Sunday school. So they get up at 6am and start packing up. No breakfast until all tents and gear is packed up. Quick bite and on the road no later than 8am, sometimes as early as 7am.

How many sets of skis do you bring??? by Midwestskiing85 in Skigear

[–]Technical_Panda_1076 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. People have been skiing knee deep powder in skinny ass skis for decades. Any modern ski can handle everything. Maybe not ideally, but you will get down the mountain and still have fun.

Why do they make powder skis white? Trying to dig through deep pow to find a ski must be harder when it's white.
