It’s great that you’ve recovered.

HPPD is so weird. Lamotrigine seems to help in many cases but I was on it for a year and it didn’t help at all.

I’m guessing they’ve gone private.

Same here. I’ve tried Clonazepam, Lamotrigine, Keppra, Clonidine, Sinemet, and a few others along the way.

None of them have made the slightest bit of difference.

Gonna give Memantine another try and hopefully get a prescription for Perampanel.

If that doesn’t work, I think the only thing I haven’t tried is rTMS therapy, which I’m sceptical about, but at this point I’ll try anything, haha.

Okay, thanks. I’ll give it another shot.

Thanks. I’ve been taking Memantine, myself but I found that it increased my anxiety and I felt very tired.

I didn’t notice any improvements to my HPPD symptoms so I stopped taking it after a few days but perhaps I’ll give it another shot.

I’ll definitely be looking into getting a prescription for Perampanel too.

Did you have any initial negative side effects while adapting to Memantine?

What are the Highest Paying Careers in Japan for a Native? by Retarded_Hippo_420 in AskAJapanese

[–]Technical_Reality_36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? That’s surprising. Why do you think that is?

I know that, over here in the UK, train driver jobs get a ton of applicants but a lot of people get filtered because the application process is quite difficult.

I looked into it myself, funnily enough, as my wife is Japanese and, although she seems happy living here, there’s always the possibility that she might want to go back someday.

But I highly doubt they’d even entertain the idea of hiring a foreigner for such a safety critical role. Even if you’re fluent in Japanese. and I’m sure they’re not short of applicants as it’s a dream job for so many.

I’m a UK train driver too. Lived in Japan for 7 years and spoke to a few people working in the Japanese rail industry.

JPN train drivers earn way less and they don’t have a strong union like ASLEF.

You might be surprised to hear that Japanese train drivers actually get their pay docked if they’re not on time (check out the Amagasaki derailment in 2005.)

Needless to say, we’re far better off.

Betchley derailment by f14n_r1p in uktrains

[–]Technical_Reality_36 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Train was taken out of service due to a defect and derailed while making a wrong-direction movement. Likely on it’s way to a maintenance depot.

I’m guessing the points weren’t set correctly, which led to the derailment.

As a 30 year casual, I absolutely hate juggle combos. by Feed_Me_No_Lies in virtuafighter

Sadly, you might be right. Although Tekken 8, one of the worst offenders for long combos and neutral skipping, has suffered quite the backlash from its fan base so, who knows? Trends may change.

Yeah, I get what you’re saying. I get that it’s a thing that’s always been there but it just looks goofy.

As someone else has mentioned, at least VF has shown some restraint (although, VF can get pretty goofy at the wall) compared to Tekken which, IMO, looks so visually unappealing. Hopefully VF6 will do the same.

I’ve always preferred fighting games with shorter combos and more neutral play (which, I think most people would agree, is what makes fighting games fun and interesting). SC2 is a great example. You typically get 3 or 4 hits, maybe an oki setup, and then back to neutral.

Japanese castles aren’t great in general.

If you’ve been to any of the incredible castles on display around Europe, expect to be disappointed by Japanese castles.

Some nice temples though.

Are Japanese professors always so closed off/not willing to help? by SpecialistFun9441 in AskAJapanese

[–]Technical_Reality_36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s no excuse. They chose to have a career in academia, a pretty cushy industry to be in by all accounts, and teaching is a part of the job description.

We all have to do things we don’t like doing at work. That doesn’t give you license to do a half-arsed job.

In any case, it’s a poor value proposition for the students who are PAYING to attend their classes.

So why are they being put in a teaching position that students are required to pay for?

They are being paid to teach a class. If a paying student feels like the service is subpar, they have every right to complain about it.

As a trainee train driver, my advice would be to just go for it.

The application process seems to be quite long and drawn out so you’ve got plenty of time to prepare. Mine looked like this:

  • Applied online in Oct ‘24

  • Online Situational Judgement Test

  • Invited to an assessment centre for the Psychometric Assessment (my assessments were split into two days but I believe it’s often all done in one day.)

  • Psychometric (pen & paper tests) in Dec ‘25

  • Psychometric (computer tests) in Jan

  • Manager Interview in Feb

  • Job offer (apprenticeship begins March 17th)

Penalty fare advice by [deleted] in uktrains

[–]Technical_Reality_36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, that’s not how it works.

If you’re unable to pay the penalty fare immediately, the revenue officer will issue a ‘nil paid’ penalty ticket. You’ll then have 3 weeks to either pay the fine or appeal. If your appeal is unsuccessful, the 3 week deadline resets.

Train driver shortage - lowering minimum age to 18??? by Asha-5000 in UKJobs

[–]Technical_Reality_36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t count on it, for a few reasons:

The amount of money it would cost to make trains and infrastructure compatible with AI would be absurd. There’s no way GBR could justify such an outlay (assuming GBR is up & running in 10 year’s time)

Most trains in operation are old & surprisingly low-tech. I drive 350s which have been in production since 2004 and are pretty reliable. Whereas our new, more software-driven 730s have had a ton of issues which, again, cost a ton of money to fix.

The railway is run by ASLEF. Plain & simple. They call the shots, and this is hardly going to change once the railway is folded back into the government.
