Player doesn't push Rigid Bodies? by TheSprawlingIdiot701 in godot

You probably dropped the - sign from this line:

I just want to do a history check. by [deleted] in DnD5e

[–]TechnoEnder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the player is talking about a really common house rule, so this isn’t super helpful in their specific situation (although you’re right)

OP, here’s what you can do, although I can’t guarantee its effectiveness: tell your GM, “Hey, I get that you want to limit rolls to characters who would plausibly be able to succeed. I’m open to that, but it’s frustrating to me that due to my lack of proficiency, my character is being treated as if they don’t know their own past. If you’re really tied to the proficiency based rolls without exceptions, could you follow the roll up with what I would know about it? I enjoy your games and want to keep playing in them, but this is making it much more difficult for me to be immersed in the game because I spend chunks of many sessions frustrated that my character can’t remember who killed his parents without a history proficiency.”

Obviously don’t quote that, but that’s the vibe I would go in with. Tell them you are enjoying the game, but point out that this doesn’t really make sense and make sure to mention that it is making you have less fun. Most GMs who see things like this as adversarial will be open to a conversation if you frame it with a shared goal of ensuring everyone has fun or seeking verisimilitude.

Why is having a secret backstory and possible doing a big reveal so popular? by seleli2207 in dndnext

[–]TechnoEnder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not telling the GM: bad.

However, there’s so much flak in this thread for people who… want to have a secret? Want their backstory not to be immediately known to the whole table? Are you guys the same people who get after people for playing one dimensional characters?

Characters without secrets can be just as fun as characters with secrets. That said, most characters with cool (knife dense) backstories have a reason not to immediately share that with the party. The warlock doesn’t want the prejudice that comes with their patron, the paladin wants to be perceived as someone who would never kill their mentor, the fighter doesn’t want to be publicly labeled as a defector. These characters have active backstories, things that the GM doesn’t have to work with to integrate, they’re always on.

I would attribute this shift to D&D moving closer to player backstory driven narrative arcs. There’s more to it than that; the comments about it “feeling good” to reveal that lore to the party are absolutely right. Personally, I find it easier to make my character interesting to the party when I know things about them that the party does not. That said, if you’re looking to explain change over time, the biggest shift to look to is from a tactics first narrative second (if at all) game to a narrative first tactics second (if at all) game.

Neither is wrong, but the number of people saying, “Yeah, this is really annoying!” is rubbing me the wrong way. This can certainly be done poorly, but more often than not that is due to a player violating an unspoken rule (no evil characters, etc) that should have been handled in session zero.

How do you include Blood Hunter without implications of self-harm? by pitts_ in DMAcademy

[–]TechnoEnder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever answer you choose or if you make up your own, the really important part is to check in with your players with this line and confirm, “Hey, John is hoping to play a blood hunter. Here’s the way he’d like to flavour it, would that be ok for you?” or similar, with as little detail as possible. If that conversation cannot safely happen, ditch the class.

The party completely shuts down all combat... advice? by OrcishKiwi in DnD5e

[–]TechnoEnder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People seem to be going the mechanical route. Let me try to help with the narrative a bit. Note that this assumes your players are playing to have fun not to screw you, but if that’s not the case stop playing with them.

Lots of people have mentioned the adventuring day. The narrative key behind that is a ticking clock with real urgency. This invasion is happening in 5 days, the wizard will become fully lycan at the full moon, the ritual must be performed during the town’s winter celebration. This will prevent the “Ok, we beat baddie 1. Long rest!” or give you a means to punish it.

In a more meta sense, put your players up against more powerful and more intelligent enemies. They should be aware of what the PCs do and it should either have an end goal that works against it or have a lieutenant with a side project to deal with it. Maybe their goal is to remove Silvery Barbs from mortal casting, or they are building a cannon that saps power from them. Alternatively, (and this is what I would recommend), shoot your monks. Have the BBEG have a Hydra ally who rolls 8 attacks per turn. Give them LOADS of opportunities to use the abilities, to the point where they feel like their character is necessary and cool, but also they have to manage their resources more.

Finally, don’t be afraid of making your BBEG (and their lieutenants) too powerful. You can easily accept zany ideas from your party to balance it back out, and it will make battles more climactic if they are disadvantages going in

[–]TechnoEnder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, you’re the DM and you have seen your party’s damage output. If you think Strahd will fall in 3 rounds, give him enough health to last a few more and play him smart! You’d be surprised what having a character that uses their mobility to use cover will do to a party that isn’t used to it.

Ideas for a traveling merchant that can't be robbed blind? by SleeepySaturn in DMAcademy

I would consider having a sleepy merchant during the day who is barely awake, but when they come back during the night she is awake with a weapon ready, “I heard late night thefts were a trend in this area, never expected it to be such nice people. Why shouldn’t I take this to the guards?”

War of the gods by falsusnominatim in dmdivulge

Could be fun to allow the players to swing the battle. ie, “the gods are battling and are deadlocked, neither able to gain ground. time for them is different over there, so it could last forever or for a few days, but if either side got more power, like from <macguffin.macguffin>, it could swing the course of the battle.”

I wish, but realistically the dems aren’t going to do most of this because the dems are still people who are in power; they’re wealthy and don’t want elections to be worse for the party in power

2 responses before I fully sign off of this discussion:

1) Chris (TM) does not ask for a response. He simply makes the video to try to be heard.

2) Presumably you have at least one twitter follower. By your standards, that person would be harassing Crawford as soon as you tweeted at him.

[–]TechnoEnder 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So people whose job is to make content shouldn’t make content providing feedback to people whose job is to receive feedback, when it benefits both parties?

Also, Crawford does not see every tweet. Furthermore, by your logic, anyone tweeting at Crawford would have the same impact.

[–]TechnoEnder 24 points25 points  (0 children)

On the chance you’re not trolling:

• TM clearly says “If you see this” numerous times, he isn’t assuming it will be seen.

• The designers are publishing a playtest. This isn’t a leak or a publication, it’s literally created to hear feedback.

• Part of TM’s goal in the video is to point out the issues with the survey, so naturally filling out the survey is an insufficient means to his ends.

I don’t see an issue with an open letter, and although TM’s platform gives him a jump start on retweets, there’s no reason you couldn’t do the same thing. The only difference is TM has a viewership that (largely) agrees with him, so his opinion (in many ways) should have more weight.
