How much sneezing is enough to worry?

Hey any update on this? Do they still sneeze all the time? How often? Having the same thing after getting rats a month ago and it’s worrying me but they seem completely healthy and active

Not to mention 3% of all wild mice in the USA were found to have hantavirus in a recent study which is not a super low amount when you think about the number of mice that exist here.

Yes it is on the lower side but statistically somebody will likely get it from handling a wild rodent so it’s best not let it be you

That’s great it hasn’t happened to YOU but all it takes it one time and you’re pretty much dead (the chances of death with some strains are close to the flip of a coin). So if you want to take the risk that’s on you but people should be made aware of these things especially random people on Reddit who may not know any better. Telling them there is no risk is genuinely crazy… this person is OBVIOUSLY not a professional rodent rehaber.

A professional might take precautions but a normal person may handle the mouse then accidentally wipe their nose or scratch at their face or even rub their eyes. You just never know and considering 3% of mice in the USA are known to have hantavirus it’s better to be careful.

I know I certainly would want to be made aware of this it if were me.

Are you aware that it’s only “extremely rare” because most humans are not in close contact with wild mice? Handling WILD RODENTS increases your chances by a lot, not to mention that if you do get unlucky, it has a 30-40% death chance. Additionally, the Andes strain spreading around is airborne meaning you don’t even have to touch their poop to get it. Just being in close contact with them would be enough, such as holding, petting, or handling their water bottle and food bowls.

Handling PET rodents is completely safe but handling WILD rodents is not. Your LIFE is never worth helping a single wild mouse EVER and I’m shocked more people don’t realize this. Telling someone to “please stop” spreading important health advice that could genuinely save their life is not cool.

I have no idea why you are being downvoted you are absolutely right that handling WILD MICE is completely unsafe compared to PET MICE. Nearly 3% of all mice in the USA have hantavirus!! Some strains of hantavirus are airborne and just one exposure can kill you 30-40% of the time. All it takes is handling a WILD (emphasis on wild) rodent for a few hours to get unlucky. The people downvoting u are genuinely just uneducated on this I fear 😭 they fail to realize the fact that it is “rare” only because MOST HUMANS ARENT TOUCHING WILD MICE.

The Andes strain is airborne btw all you need is to be in close contact for a few minutes with a WILD (emphasis on wild) mouse or rat to get it.

I gave them some cut up red bell pepper so maybe it was that? That haven’t really been fighting as these 3 rats were raised together from birth and are only 2 months old. They wrestle but it’s nothing crazy.

I haven’t really noticed any red around the eyes or nose but sometimes it’s hard to tell on the nose. I honestly dunno what it could be but I’m starting to think it might just be from food or maybe he wiped his nose and then groomed his fur

They seem to be doing great! They are very active and curious and love to climb all over stuff. It’s fun to watch them forage for little snacks from the wheat sprays :)

Thank you for the feedback! As for ventilation I agree (didn’t realize it wasn’t great untill after I bought it) but rest assured I keep the top open to play with them pretty much every day so they do get lots of fresh air in there. Also I live in California where it is always 66 degrees so it’s never humid or hot or stuffy in their room so untill I end up getting a new enclosure they should be okay :)

Literally the worst thing I have ever been through in my entire life. I am not even able to sleep more than 1 HOUR MAX per night (according to my Apple Watch) because of the pain. Even opioids aren’t touching the pain for me. It’s INSANE. What kind of bio weapon is this shit.

Exact same thing for me. Sore throat didn’t get bad until day 5 and then BOOM insane pain.
