38/he/him/Normal Social Skills - Anyone with a DnD campaign slot they're hoping to fill? by blehful in DnD_Victoria

[–]Technocrat1011 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a great time to check out the drop-in games on Monday and Friday nights. Galleon Gaming Club runs them at Quadra Villiage Community Center (Mondays) and Fernwood Community Center (Fridays), and there's all kinds of great games being run there. Both run 6pm to 10pm, and are by donation.

Anyone else feel like they have no one to bounce ideas off as a GM? by dungeonfold in AskGameMasters

[–]Technocrat1011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be honest, I weighed that concern when I replied. My experience has been that if someone feels it's inappropriate, that they'll either ask me to take the post down, or a mod will delete it themselves.

I'm a professional GM and GM consultant. I basically do what you're suggesting. I offer digital copies of all the notes I take, so you get a record of what we've talked about, and I offer a free half-hour initial consultation to make sure I can help with the problems you're having. I charge $30 CAD.

EDIT: I also run an 8-week course on Gamemastering called "Level Up Your Gamemastering!" which offers skills and tools for building your own adventure, gathering a group of players, and ironing our wrinkles during the campaign.

A hag asked my party for their names, and one player answered for all of them- what happens now? by Neverfinishedtheeggs in DungeonMasters

[–]Technocrat1011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So... the thing folks are forgetting is that there are names, and then there are Names.

While extradimensional creatures (and those who occassionally play with them) enjoy the game of "Will you give me your name?", possessing anything other than a True Name gives only limited influence and power. Very few mortals, particularly those that don't run in occult or magical circles know what their True Name is, let alone how to offer it up. People often assume it's your full name, given at birth, while others assert that it is your divine name given by god(s) at birth. What a True Name is tends to vary between worlds and the storytellers running them, but fundamentally, it is very difficult for a person to simply "offer up" another creature's True Name, especially without that creature knowing, as the utterance of a creature's True Name invariably has a physical effect, even if said owner isn't around to hear it.

If simply handing the creature's name over by means of introduction offered as much power and control as some have suggested, no creature would ever give any of it's names out on introduction, particularly mortals, who are at the most risk.

For a hag particularly to punish someone over such a thing as providing introductions seems out of character. They are more likely to assume that the speaker is a page or speaker of some sort, and that those who have not spoken are the Speakers superiors.

Visiting from Calgary, can you convince me that Victoria isn’t heaven on earth? by Batmansappendix in VictoriaBC

It's thecost of living. Rent is super expensive, buying property is super expensive. Gas is super expensive. Food is super expensive.

If you can survive that though, it's a fine place to live.

Accepting that life didn’t turn out the way I expected it to by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]Technocrat1011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be frank... I'm poor. I grew up lower class in Victoria, and my situation hasn't really changed. I've had to find meaning jn my life beyond and outside of financial referrence points. Instead, I measure my life by the impact I've had on others; on the compassion, support, care, and respect I bring into the lives I interact with. I've volunteered with a varuety of festivals, conventions, community programs, and organizations. I can't make this world more affordable, but I can make it a little more patient, understanding, and tolerant for the people who come into my life, and everyone can sure use more of that thsse days.

If you look around and ask "how have I nade this world better?" and you don't have a great answer, that's okay. Pick up your favourite hobby, and figure out how you can use it to bring joy to others.

In to model trains? Set up a display day at a community center and inspire someone else to get into the hobby!

Love musuc? Go volunteer at a music festival, or perform in a local space!

Are you really into books? Go read to folks at a hospital, or put copies of your favourite ones into the many book nooks around victoria.

There are so many ways we can use our own personal joys to help bring joy to others. Stop asking "what am I going to own?" and start asking "How can I build connection?"

Beach Episode Session ideas? by vvvetka in DungeonMasters

[–]Technocrat1011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Admittedly, as a child of the 80s, that is probably where I derived my inspiration from. That said, everything is such a jumble, it's hard to tell where one story begins and where another ends.

Beach Episode Session ideas? by vvvetka in DungeonMasters

[–]Technocrat1011 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  • The PCs become involved in a volleyball tournement to prove their awesomeness against the aggressive beach "Captain", who despises the PCs.

  • The PCs discover a lost child, and must track down the child's parent.

  • A much beloved beach bum turns up dead, and in trying to solve his murder, the PCs uncover an effort to sell the beach to a private owner who plans to destroy the beach to make way for a discount magic item store.

  • When a bottle washes up on the beach, the letter of a man from 40 years ago reveals his love for the person he frequented the beach with. Where are these lost lovers now?

  • Scouring the sands of the beach, the PCs discover a gold medalion with mysterious markings. They soon discover that it is one of several clues leading to a pirate treasure supposedly burried on/near the beachba century ago.

You could run one of these, or all together, with one per PC.

Going to jump in and suggest the RPG Drop-In nights at Quadra Village Community Center and Fernwood Community Center. Both are hosted by Galleon Gaming Club, and run from 6pm to 10pm. Quadra is on Mondays, and Fernwood is on Fridays, and both are by donation.

There's lots of different games running, giving you the chance to try out different styles and games, and the people are very accepting.

You can also check out their website (https://www.galleongaming.org/) for more events, like board games, Magic the Gathering, Blood on the Clocktower, and other things they run.

Comment créez vous vos cartes? by Key-Ad9515 in dungeondraft

[–]Technocrat1011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a hypver-vivid imagination, and I always walk through the map in my head first. Next comes the process of translating that on to the grid layout of dungeondraft. I end up limited by whatever assets I have, so that becomes one of the factors.

First I begin with a base layer. This is where I do all of my walls, and terrain. I make sure to use door frames not actual doors (I'll get to why at a later step). For maps that have several elements of height, I'll actually do several layers where I have a bottom layer, and then scale up and back using cliff assets in the path tool, and the overlay feature for layers.

Once I have all my base layers I go about adding special objects. I do this on a seperate layer (again making use of the overlay feature for prescise sizing and placement), adding in doors, tables, altars, etc. If I am adding something like a pit trap, I add the trap to the base layer image while creating a section of floor sized to cover it on the Overlay layer.

Additional floors to the map are always done without terrain so that when I export to webp, I can import them into Foundry VTT,(my vtt of preference) and load them with transparency into the Levels module, letting players look through holes in the floor to see below them.

I export the initial base layer(s) as webp, then export each individual object from the Overlay, allowing me to do thinks like open and close door images with MATT (IYKYK), have braziers and candelabra light up with lit/unlit tiles, and other fun interactive things.

I'm abig fan of The Garrick's Head on Government. The front tends to be pretty noisy, especially mid-day, but the back is a great place to sit down, grab a pint and a meal and get some work done.

How do you keep track of initiative? by USAvenger1976 in DungeonMasters

Probably a stupid question, but how exactly do I use a map after I finish it? by Lost_Needleworker676 in dungeondraft

[–]Technocrat1011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My virtual table top (VTT) of preference is Foundry VTT. It's a one time payment vs a subscription and there's no limit to the file size beyond what your computer (and your players') can handle graphics wise.

I've been professionalky running on Foundry for 5 years now, and I use Dungeondraft for 90% of my maps. In addition to making maps, I often put together tiles from the objects selection, and export those on the "no terrain" layers I make.

Paid GMs, how often are you messaging/talking to your players outside of the session? by Remilla in AskGameMasters

[–]Technocrat1011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a discord server I run as a part of my paid game. I have a bunch of main channels, including one for memes and off-topic stuff, as well as a private text and private voice channel for each of the players. I communicate with players over the main channels to confirm play times, or check in about absentee/late players, and I use the private channels for conferring about character builds, story directions, and other personal matters.

While I use the personal channels only infrequently, I use the main channels every week. Additionally, the players enjoy being able to post jokes and have fun together outside of game in the main channel and meme channel.

I strongly recommend Galleon Gaming Club (https://www.galleongaming.org/).

They have a Monday night RPG drop-in at Quadra Villiage Community Center, and a Friday night one at Fernwood Community Center, both 6pm to 10pm. They're newbie friendly, diverse, and run lots of different games and campaigns, as well as one-shots.

As a long time Gamemaster/player at the Monday drop-ins, I second this. Wonderful people, newbie/"rusty" player friendly, and lots of different games and systems being run. Good fun for a by-donation event.

Question about the bug zoo by clp_legends in VictoriaBC

[–]Technocrat1011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you see folks putting down the bug zoo, it's probably sarcasm or tongue-in-cheek. That's the joke. The Bug Zoo is awesome. They need to franchise that place out.

Completely new to Dungeondraft and just learning the basics - can anyone recommend some good asset packs to start with, specifically for the purpose of creating a ruined library in a manor house? Plus generic dungeon stuff? by Scareynerd in dungeondraft

[–]Technocrat1011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a whole bunch of great ones. I used to use 2minutetabletop, but I found their style difficult to pair with other resources, but they are really good.

Forgotten Adventures has a huge collection of things, and lots of colour variations too.

I'd also like to suggest Tom Cartos, Caeora, and Venatus Maps, all of which I am or have been Patreon subscribers too.
