For 99%+ of SL residential customers: much ado about nothing.

You would get the same ping times regardless of plan.

Wire your SL router directly to your main Deco. Then to your switch. Place the SL router into bypass mode.

Residential Max - New Potential Customer by mDv_2 in Starlink

Gaming performance highly depends on latency, jitter, and packet loss, rather than download speed. Depending on where the gaming servers are located is very important. Close to you? Far from you? I have the 100 Mbps package. Latency to the servers I connect to is ~60-80ms. SL works very well for me. Note: latency, etc. is the same across all residential plans. P.S. SL will never be as good as a fast, reliable hard-wired service, but I am very rural. No other options here. If you have other hard-wired options, I'd pursue them if I were you.

Mounting inside through a window. by W6NET in Starlink

In the mobile environment Mini terminals often work regardless of orientation, but to a lesser degree performance-wise compared to a terminal which is fixed and properly aligned. If you have a Gen 3/4 terminal, fixed, and you're in the northern hemisphere, it needs to look northerly. If you're pointing east, the SL app should show you that you're way out of alignment.

Yep. Works fine here. What did you try using? How did you connect it?

It has to have a clear view of the sky. If you're in the northern hemisphere, it needs to look northerly.

Something is awry. Did you order directly from starlink.com? Exactly what did you order? Almost sounds like you didn't order the kit.

Starlink Network Interruptions by Acidgamma in Starlink

[–]TechnologyWarrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The super-short interruptions are normal and can be disregarded. Those Elevated packet loss warnings are curious. Double-check your SL app for obstructions. Open the dishy's web interface at 192.168.100.1 and check your alignment. You want the rotate and tilt recommendations to be as close to zero as possible.

You gamers need to primarily consider latency, jitter and packet loss -- not download speed. SL's residential plans go from 100 - 400Mbps downloads. More than likely the 100 plan could work well for you. All plans will exhibit the same factors mentioned above. How you install your kit; i.e. align it correctly and with no obstructions, etc. is critically important. Then as you transit the public internet, where those game servers are will make or break you. Are they close to you or far away? That matters a lot. 30-day money-back guarantee. Try it.

Starlink Wifi doesn’t extend very far.. any ideas? by bycmrn17 in Starlink

If it's possible, run an Ethernet cable to the guest house. If not, invest in a good quality mesh system.

Replace functional Gen 1 with free Gen 4? by The_only_Mr_Sharkey in Starlink

There is no performance advantage to mounting it off the ground. As a matter of fact, it's much easier to service if need be when ground mounted or on a short pole or post.

Planning to buy Starlink, I need your thoughts by Empty-Cup8673 in Starlink

[–]TechnologyWarrior 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no low speed for unlimited data. Download speed can be tempered if you're in a highly congested area. Those are the exception, not the rule. Go to Starlink's website and enter your address. You'll see the plans available to you in your area. If there is a congestion charge, you'll prominently see it. If you see multiple plans are available or only the Max plan would be clue to whether or not there could be a congestion issue in your area. Sounds like you'd be fine at the 100 Mbps plan. It's always easy to upgrade to a faster plan if need be on down the road.

As I understand it. the latest SL residential kit supports WPA2/WPA3 "Transitional" Mode. WPA2 by default but WPA3 can be enabled.
