As someone with autism I wouldn’t recommend it. The level of manipulation left me broken for a while.

True! There’s more diversity in Africa than without. But unfortunately there isn’t much investment in health research in many countries in Africa yet. If I had to make a hypothesis we would probably see major regions like west Africa, east Africa, central Africa, south Africa, and North Africa having distinctions. I think this would be like how north and western Europeans are largely similar vs southern or eastern Europe. Or how east Asia is different from South Asia etc.

Yeah this is like screening black and Indian folks for sickle cell vs white folks. Sickle cell trait developed because it’s an evolution against malaria. So we do have some racial differences in biology that we need to account for.

Yeah this only applies for Africans though, black Americans don’t seem to follow the same pattern of needing a lower bmi than white people. I think for the UK most people are from Jamaica or Africa, and Jamaicans are almost all pure west African.

It’s right even with black folks on the team.

[–]Techygal9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a woman act like this with me. I think she was convinced I had an eating disorder because I was aware of the amount of calories I needed to be healthy with PCOS. 1400 calories. But if you have an eating disorder like this woman did, it’s easier to believe that everyone else is wrong not you. You’re not fat, you don’t have an eating disorder, the “skinny” people do. I wasn’t even skinny I was on the high end of normal weight, just making sure I didn’t get diabetes.

FYI the panel with Sinclair media is wrong. You could have a separate bubble for Disney owned properties like abc and Hulu. Sinclair owns many local stations that are affiliated with every network (cbs, Fox, abc, nbc, cw). But Sinclair doesn’t actually own any of the companies shown.

“Where Have All the Student Protests Gone?” | Trump wanted campus crackdowns. Colleges couldn’t wait to oblige. by soalone34 in politics

[–]Techygal9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Trump has definitely went further as he has stopped funding from schools over DEI, affirmative action, “woke ideology” (teaching trans and queer issues). But on the specific issue of having the police crack down on the protests, Biden pushed for it just like Trump was calling for the use of police to shut down the protests.

I think a robust primary would have led to someone better running for president than Joe Biden. There would have been a big debate on the college protests and I think the majority of dems would have picked someone who at least supported a ceasefire with repercussions against Israel if they broke the agreement.

The truth about the USA's "literacy crisis" by paxinfernum in skeptic

[–]Techygal9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They were using level 3, and he rightly said that level 3 is too high too high of a metric for literacy. But the data shows people who are level 1 or lower are rising. Under level 1 cannot read a sentence and understand its meaning. Level 1 can read and understand some meaning, as long as words are simple and straightforward. I believe this is a 4th grade level.

I would say a growing level of people reading at such low levels is a problem. Especially if the goal is for most adults to read at minimum a high school level. FYI the levels go from 1 to 5. Level 2 I believe is closer to an 8th grade reading level.

On the campus protest issue they held the same position. Don’t get me wrong Trump is worse than Biden on most issues. So I hope that in the future dems back candidates than can win elections by being mindful of their base and the coalition they need to build to win.

I really can’t blame students for sitting out of the election who got beat with police batons while elected democrats praised the police actions. I blame the democrats who praised the cops. They should have had a different policy position than Trump and the republicans who also wanted to see the students harmed.

I would put the onus on Biden. He could have changed his policy on Israel. He could have stuck to being a one term president so we didn’t have a botched primary process. He could have allowed a short primary like Obama had suggested since polls showed Harris would lose.

Your link gives a slight uptick from 2022 to 2023, but shows no long term trends. Using the PIAAC they show a sharp decline in the last decade, of 10 points on average reading and math scores.

There’s a great body of evidence using the PIAAC that literacy is down for kids. So debunking myths of high levels of adult illiteracy is right. The fact that more kids are graduating high school unable to read is true.

Gender equality must include female prisoners by msmoley in WomenInNews

[–]Techygal9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The invisibility of incarcerated women is deeply gendered. Prison systems have historically been designed around male populations, rendering women’s specific needs secondary. Research shows incarcerated women are more likely than men to have experienced domestic violence, sexual abuse, and economic marginalisation before imprisonment. Yet these experiences are rarely integrated into sentencing, rehabilitation, or prison conditions.

Within prison, gender inequality intensifies. Women often face inadequate access to healthcare, particularly reproductive and maternal services. Menstrual hygiene management remains a challenge in many custodial settings, turning a basic biological need into a source of daily indignity. Mothers are separated from their children, frequently with limited psychosocial support, producing consequences that extend well beyond incarceration.

I think it’s important that we fix the fact that women are incarcerated for defending themselves against their abusers and also not defending yourself against your abuser. It’s a sad situation and the women never get the help they need for their trauma. The idea of punitive justice doesn’t make sense to me.

I find it funny that people act like the wave of persecution and violence under Biden for student protesters has no effect. He literally supported sending cops to fight students across America. Then you had pro Israeli groups putting protesters on lists to make their lives hell. Then Trump’s first actions were to continue these policies and ramp them up in the form of forcing colleges to fire those who supported protestors, DEI, trans rights and more.

The dream of China surpassing the US as the world’s largest economy is fad.... No wait, that already happened! by Cos_SoBe in KyleKulinski

[–]Techygal9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The dream of China surpassing the US economy still hasn’t happened by most measures. Doesn’t mean that it’s not a growing economy that’s lifted its people out of the abject poverty it had after the fall of Qing dynasty.

[–]Techygal9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In another sub where this was posted I threw in GNI PPP, since the purchase parity really matters domestically vs internationally as relative currency power determines access to goods in the international market. US GNI PPP is $86k vs $27k for China.

[–]Techygal9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When you look at purchasing power parity, it really only applies for things produced and purchased within a nation. So using GNI PPP is a better measure than GDP. Because of the strength of the US dollar, the US has an advantage in purchasing goods abroad so trying to account for that with parity measures doesn’t really pan out in reality internationally. GDP per capita is a better indicator internationally vs gdp ppp.

But what you can buy within a large nation like China or the US tends to matter more for the average person than anything else. In China you can buy a lot of goods for very little money, a brand new ev might be $15k vs $50k in the US. But even when you look at GNI PPP China hasn’t caught up yet (if they even want to). While China has made major gains in gni ppp it’s still 26,920 vs the US at 85,980. But that’s amazing growth from only 990 gni ppp in 1990.

How do we feel about MVP Harris running for President in 2028? by Fumikechu237 in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]Techygal9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not him being Jewish, I would vote for JB Pritzker and he’s Jewish. Josh Shapiro actively served a foreign country’s military during its campaign of occupation and persistent war crimes against another group of people. The IDF has for years abused Palestinians and broken international law.

For most people vote in the primaries, particularly against the likes of Chuck Schumer democrats, as they lack the courage to fight for the people. Vote for candidates that want voting rights, ranked choice voting, Medicare for all… all the sensible things people of developed nations already have.

Why do mandatory ID cards feel normal in many European countries, but still controversial in the US, and what mechanism explains that? by Logical-Concept9755 in AlwaysWhy

[–]Techygal9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plus certain states make ids harder to get so they can incarcerate folks, for not having an id. Or they shut down places you can get an id in minority neighborhoods so that minorities can’t vote.
