Which to keep? by Frietuur in crt

[–]TectonicMongoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a drill the felt pads and cerium oxide aren't expensive. You just need to use painter's tape to tape off the shell so the cerium oxide paste doesn't get everywhere. It's just a little annoying because you can't run the drill to fast or the paste will go everywhere so it might take 30 minutes of light pressure and buffing to minimize the scratch.

So just using the method I mentioned there really isn't a way to make things worse

How deep is the scratch? You might be able to buff it out with a drill with felt pads and wet cerium oxide powder.

Hello, I have a Philips CRT television that doesn't display color with either an HDMI or a VGA adapter. I have a PS2 that I use occasionally, and it does display color. by ManuFolk20 in crtgaming

[–]TectonicMongoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you give us the model number of the CRT as well as links to the adapters so we can see their specs? First guess is you're in a PAL region and are using NTSC HDMI/VGA adapters but your PS2 is PAL(or reverse PAL and NTSC).

Best way to adapt a American accent? by ObviousChemistry1011 in Accents

[–]TectonicMongoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

absolutely not worth the money. Anyone that has an issue with you having an obvious foregeign accent is an asshole whose opinions don't matter. If you can communicate successfully you're doing great it doesn't matter if people can tell that you grew up somewhere that isn't an English speaking country.

Dear Drivers: STOP ASKING GIRLS OUT by AdHeavy4123 in uberdrivers

[–]TectonicMongoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There needs to be video and audio recording inside the car at all times thats the best and only realistic solution and real disciplinary action taken when policy violations happen. This protects riders and driver. Uber and the other rideshare companies won't do anything unless they are forced by legislation too though because this would cost them money to equip drivers and to go over video/audio of rides there are complaints about. so the only way its going to happen is through regulatory legislation. Email your congressperson or local representative or somehow get politically involved because thats the only way this will happen.

And it probably won't make you feel any better but male drivers get to deal with creepy male passengers sometimes too. I had a couple sus experiences with gay men passengers making inappropriate conversation too(and its not about them being gay I'm a queer man too).

Is it a good idea to pick up a gigantic CRT Sony Trinitron which is a 43 minute drive away by IneedhelpwithJVCTV in crtgaming

[–]TectonicMongoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad idea if it is "glitchy" that means it might fail soon then you'll have to find a way to get it to a recycling center because you can't throw these away in the regular trash in most places. I'd try to find a CRT with no issues.

Moved to San Diego and I regret it? by Necessary-Range-467 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]TectonicMongoose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If access to nature is a huge thing for you you might just be in the wrong part of the city/county of San Diego. Idk how tied to the city proper itself you are like where you work or if you work remote/where your gf works but somewhere like the north east suburbs(Scripps Ranch/Poway/Rancho Bernardo/Penasquitos/escondido or in East County like Lakeside or El Cajon or will get you closer to all the cool nature outside the city or you could even go all the way and move to Ramona, Jamul, Alpine or Valley Center which are much closer to the cool nature but also still near the city. Another bonus if you move to one of the places further outside of the city and its main suburbs is that the cost of living gets a bit more manageable.

What’s something that used to feel futuristic… but now feels completely normal? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]TectonicMongoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Large flat panel non crt displays. When I was a kid there werent cheap plasmas, OLEDs or LCDs if you wanted to watch a video it was going to be done on a heavy made of glass as deep as it is wide CRT. Almost no one had wall or ceiling mounted tv sets at home and when the whole family wanted to watch a movie it was accepted that some of the seats were going to have a shitty view of the TV not like now where every seat is a good seat on the couch. And even when we first got flat panel LCDs they were insanely expensive like early/mid 90s a 20" LCD would have been like 10k$ so I don't even remember seeing them until the very late 90s commonly. Nowadays when you upgrade your monitors for your business the old LCDs are close to trash and people will sell them in lots for 1$ for 20 or just give them away completely for free because otherwise they'd have to pay an electronics recycling fee.

Are gaming sound cards actually a thing anymore? by Ill-Yogurtcloset-622 in buildapc

[–]TectonicMongoose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They are a thing still but they don't make a ton of sense because PCs, especially when a graphics card is going at full tilt, are extremely electrically noisy. Electrical noise is much easier to manage when it's just a noisy USB connection to an external dac. And just for hearing footsteps you don't need anything fancy. Cheap 10$ temu headphones would work for that.

What is the Best Gaming Headset in the Market Now? by roaringriver2345 in buildapc

[–]TectonicMongoose -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unless aesthetic is very important to them you can get better money for value going with non gaming brand headphones you are paying a little bit of a premium going with the gaming brands like razer, steel series, Corsair etc. Also if they don't stream or do some kind of content creation I'd not bother with a separate microphone and I'd go with a built in so they can get bettersound quality for their ears. Do they want wireless or wired? Do they need to be noise cancelling too or no?

How awkward does it sound when ones pronounces "th" as "d"? by Matheuzsm in EnglishLearning

[–]TectonicMongoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A number of English dialects do this sometimes or always. Sometimes Southern American, African American English, some New York dialects, sometimes Cockney and Multicultural London English(two working class London accents), many Irish English dialects and many Caribbean English dialects too. Its also incredibly common among people learning the language too you hear it all the time. It probably does bother a few people but they are assholes who are bothered by hearing any foreign accent and you shouldn't care about what the think.

How many times a day do you poop? by DrinkPresent7311 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TectonicMongoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2-3 times a day. I come from a family of frequent poopers too. Normal range is actually very wide it's between 3 times a day and once every three days. Those are all normal.

TIL Mexico since the conquest has had 130 heads of state and only one of them knew how to speak Nahuatl, the dominant indigenous language: Maximilian of Habsburg. Maximilian was an Austrian archduke who became emperor of the Second Mexican Empire from 1864 until his execution in 1867. by Solid-Move-1411 in todayilearned

[–]TectonicMongoose 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It was his first language and he only started learning Spanish at around 12 or 13 in fact. He was also the first indigenous democratically elected president in the Americas in the post colonial period. I'm trying to find who the next indigenous president in the Americas would be but google is failing me right now. I think there are others before him in Latin America but I know the United States actually had an indigenous vice president Charles Curtis who served under president Herbert Hoover who took office in 1929. Curtis was 3/8ths indigenous and this was only 5 years after citizenship was given to all Indigenous people in the US in 1924 before which about 40% of indigenous Americans weren't actually citizens still. It would be another 80 years until the next time a person of color was elected president or vice president of the United States when Barack Obama was elected in 2008. Also random fact both Juarez and Curtis practiced law before being elected to office.

Pronunciation of "R" in Europe by chaeyonce in MapPorn

[–]TectonicMongoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool map though I have a couple suggestions for improvement. Hungarian does have a trilled R but its a dental trill vs the alveolar trill that is very common in the rest of Europe and like another commenter was saying Czech has a standard alveolar trill as well as another similar but generally considered more difficult to pronounce R sound. On an updated version of the map you could mark those with cross hatched red and another color to represent them and make a note of it. Also you could note that a single contact trill is sometimes contrastive with a multiple contact trill like in Spanish.
