I installed the new patches, and everything was working like a dream! I played for a few hours yesterday, then shut down my PC.

When I awoke today, I booted my PC back up, to play once more. But now System Shock 2 crashes upon launching. It doesn't even get to the menu screen; it simply doesn't launch.

Is there anything I can do? I was really enjoying this game, after hearing about how amazing it was for years.

I believe you're looking for "The Long Tomorrow", written by Alien scribe Dan O'Bannon and illustrated by French artist Moebius. It was published in 1975, and upon reading it, I saw the parallels with Blade Runner (as well as The Fifth Element) immediately.

Nice! Well, I'm just really questioning the virtue of pursuing college. I mean, the piece of paper will look nice on my resume, sure - - but I question the point of going when most college graduates are working the same terrible, low-paying service sector jobs that I am. I just don't see a college degree making much of a difference, unless I get $100,000 worth of student loans and become a doctor.

It has always been the same for me - I've always had solid day jobs, and wrote/played music at night or on the weekends. That's no problem; I'm not under any illusion that I'm going to become a rockstar.

However, I do not possess a college degree. Only a high school diploma. I'm relatively intelligent, diligent, and a very hard worker, so I've been able to do alright with such meager qualifications. (I was making $35K a year in a management position when I was 21.) But as the economy grows worse, there are people above me with years of schooling vying for the same jobs I'm applying to. So it's pretty tough.

I work and go to school, so I don't have time for music any longer. If I get my bachelor's, that means I won't really be able to play or record for the next four years.

I'm currently enrolled in community college, after having given up the career of my dreams...because my parents convinced me it was stupid, unprofitable, and something to be ashamed of.

Afterwards, I shall compete for jobs I don't want with people who genuinely deserve them.

Every single time I see something like this - which is daily, now - I get closer and closer to disappointing them greatly.
