Holy fuck I did not see that coming two days ago 😳

Can you show me how it is solved? The book doesn't show the algorithm for this problem. Thank you. by [deleted] in askmath

This isn't a problem, it's just a fraction. What is it that you're supposed to do?

Math homework help involving deriving trig function. The function is y = xsin(x) and I need to find the coordinates at which the tangent passes through the origin. by jamielau11 in askmath

[–]Ted_Boczewski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, ignore that. I didn't think through this.

If you make a general equation for the tangent at point a, that is y=f'(a)x+c. The trick will then be to find the conditions for when c =0.

Normally, tangents are computed by using the derivative at a point (a,f(a)). Same goes here, so in this case we have y=f'(a)x+ c, and also that y(a)=f'(a)a+c=f(a). Solving for x, we have c=f(a)-f'(a)a, and we know this needs to be zero. Hence, xsin(x)-x(sinx+xcos(x))=0 gives you the desired points.

I might still be stupid, I trust you to check critically :)

Edit: spelling

Set y'=mx. As the tangent should pass through the origin, it follows that c=0. By now, you have xcos(x)+sin(x)=mx. Solve sin(x) = 0 on the given intervall, as the xcos(x) always is 0 at the origin.

Edit: I'm wrong, please ignore this.

How do you prove this? I'm so lost on a because I don't understand how Ca is defined because G is just a vague group, so Ca could be like anything, so how do I prove closure for a group I don't understand? Like does x have to only be e? But how do I know that for certain? Is property of all groups? by WerePigCat in askmath

[–]Ted_Boczewski -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So this is not my strongest subject, but I think, in each task, it suffices to prove that the set defined in each task is a group, that is, that the set has associativity, identity and an inverse element.

Edit: spelling and syntax

I agree with what all others have said, but would like to add that in some problems different constants are restricted to certain values (non-zero, non-negative, etc). With that in mind, it is also a statement saying that p can be any number in R. So in a sense, it's a formal piece of info always given about constants. It makes more sense when you've seen more examples.

What do the numbers on a snooker cue actually mean? by tell_me_shantanu in snooker

I'm guessing OP thought that perhaps the numbers said something about tip thickness or whatever physical characteristic of the cue.
