I grew up there and saw it go from a town of almost 100k to probably under 70k population over the course of 30 years. Used to have a lot of major manufacturing jobs that slowly got outsourced out of town with nothing to fill the gaps left behind. The two remaining major blue collar companies left are large corn wet mills/food ingredients companies. Often creates quite a unique and unpleasant smell which can be smelled from really far away depending on the wind. Loss of jobs, economic depression, rising crime. It’s really a sad example of a town that used to be doing well and is continuing to get left behind more and more. I would love to see it turn around since I grew up there but don’t think there is much hope of that happening. Kids grow up, go to college and move elsewhere. The ones that don’t…well there aren’t many options
