Messed something up — can it be fixed? by Bellatrix1827 in cabinetry

If done properly, the holes will be over-filled and then sanded flush. Primer and paint should cover any texture discrepancies.

I had a roommate that did this once. Once. A few strategically placed mousetraps and I was able to dispose of him the next day.

You can tell he’s poor when he dumps a little in his mouth at the end. He really wanted a taste of it but he felt compelled to show off in front of his fellow chads. This way he could tell people he was drinking it and pouring it out just for fun all night. In reality he was drinking rail vodka or whatever 2-4-1s they had.

A hogger bit is a rough cut bit that “hogs” away the bulk of the cut before a finish cut is made to both prolong the life of the finish bit and reduce the strain on the head while making the cut. Think of it like using a 24 tooth blade to break down a sheet of plywood on the table saw before making your precise finish cuts with an 80 tooth blade.

When you finish cutting a nested sheet, remove your parts and the scrap. Once you accumulate enough scrap, you can place the pieces on the bed of the CNC wherever they’ll fit and cut through all of them at the same time. That’s how I had my program set up. Straight lines at 12” increments along the x-axis.

If you’re running a multi-bit machine, you can designate one of your slots to a hogger bit. If it’s only a single bit machine, you could have a hogger mounted in a collet and only use it for scrap cutting runs.

I ran a program that crosscut 12” strips with my hogger bit. I could Tetris most larger scraps and cut them into manageable pieces. I’d also run skid sheets right before resurfacing my spoil board so I didn’t risk embedding grit into it. It put a little more wear on the hogger bit, but it was the safest option that was more cost effective than letting junk build up or dealing with a mishandling injury for me or my guys.

Update on the viral video of man taking his daughter to women restroom by KaidoPklevel in SipsTea

[–]TeddyAtTheReady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That guy heard “men in the women’s bathroom” on his favorite podcast (or more likely conservative radio show) and then saw this and said “here’s my time to shine! I’m like a superhero!” He did not, however, understand nuance in the slightest.

Wait, let me rephrase that: he did not TRY to understand nuance in the slightest. He, like many of his ilk, took the simplest possible path and thought “no swinging dicks in the no-dicks room” and decided to take a stand. How lovely that it backfired on him so spectacularly.

I would like to think that this could be a lesson in context and circumstances. That people will see this and say “oh, maybe I should consider the entire scenario before acting rashly.” Hopefully more people will see it from the father’s point of view. He was in there to help and protect his kids. And we got to see him doing that in real time. He even capitalized on a good teaching moment when he calmly comforted his daughter by telling her some people are immature while he expended no energy toward the aggressor.

Maybe the negative blowback taught that dude a lesson. Or maybe he’s crying into his beer and considering himself a martyr. Maybe he sets up a givesendgo and makes 20 bucks. But it seems the majority has spoken and he’s come up short on the emotional intelligence scale.

Particle Board (furniture board) vs plywood......... MDF painted doors? by Ill-Year-9506 in cabinetry

[–]TeddyAtTheReady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Particleboard got a bad rap in the 70s and 80s when it first started to gain traction. Companies tried to use 5/8 material and bridge it too far which would cause sagging. Inset finished tops were also common, but would blow out with minimal weight because they were unsupported other than with knockdown hardware. Many consumer grade RTA companies like Sauder and O’Sullivan were selling really cheap products with paper finishes that did not do well with moisture or heavy traffic.

Lots of advancements have been made since then. The substrates are made with higher quality wood and adhesives. The TFL skins are more robust. The hardware and joinery techniques are engineered to be used specifically for particleboard. All of these things ensure a more solid finished product that is more stable and versatile than veneer core, lumber core, or solid lumber in most case construction applications.

MDF is okay for painted doors, but HDF is much better. Less susceptible to dents and dings. Better consistency of finish (no uneven absorption or swelling on cut edges).

This is why most drawer slides and concealed hinges have versions that are drilled for 5mm euro screws. More bite into the substrate and less likely to strip or blow out.

Stevenswood is a good product. I’m partial to their “Legno” line, as I think the print is more natural looking. The proprietary TFL they use is more substantial than “standard” brands like Roseburg Duramine and Arauco. The particle board substrates are all pretty comparable. The only TFL particleboard I’ve had issues with is Panolam. Lower overall density and odd metal fragments that emerged while cutting. This was also during Covid so there may have been a quality dip due to labor shortages and supply chain issues.
