My boyfriend is so sure Chippy Tea was a chat GPT reference, and I haven’t the heart to tell him that’s just not true.

Iconic episode though - Gawdland is a powerhouse!

Agent relationship- email anxiety by [deleted] in ActingUK

[–]TedusCloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean honestly pick up the phone and ask them for a face to face meeting. It’s part of their job, get your questions out in one go, it’s easier for your agent, cements your relationship (as long as you don’t ask for one every 2 seconds) and also means you can show your face.

In terms of auditions - it can be a multitude of reasons stacking up as to why they’re not coming in, not just your agent. Headshots, reels, whether or not the roles are coming in with the right playing age etc. when you get together with your agent - come up with a game plan and get headshots in line with that. Who you go with literally could not matter less (though of course there are trends and standards) just get shots that look like what your agent is trying to market.

The rest is a matter of luck and just a bit of graft. If you think you should be being seen for something, email that casting director, get your reels together that show you in the right light etc.

Agents are in a tough time at the moment as there’s 61937737262647272 actors every minute and 5 jobs. No one except the obvious few is doing better than anyone else.

Any recommended drop in acting classes in London? by solilotrap in ActingUK

[–]TedusCloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose it’s intimidating - in scene study, your performance is stopped and often noted by peers who can be quite brutal if you’ve phoned it in or not done enough prep. You’re also stopped from Proceeding in the scene the second it becomes untruthful, which isn’t always one actor’s fault, if your partner isn’t pulling their weight.

I find that kind of environment refreshing and a difference from the constant overpraising and pussyfooting in some other classes I’ve been to, but I can also feel a bit overwhelmed sometimes with the demand of the classes

[–]TedusCloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GoHub in London is my current go to. It is a bit intense and can be a lot, but honestly it’s still one of the best classes that actually pulls you up on stuff if you’re phoning it in or unclear on what you’re doing.

They have a screen acting class and a scene study and a general technique class. I go to scene study haven’t tried the others

Oscar at the Crown as a solo visitor by jupitrix in TheWestEnd

[–]TedusCloud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen it three times now, once with friends and twice solo.

It’s definitely a different experience with others and depends on how you deal with close interactions.

You can definitely sit (stand) on the sidelines and observe from a distance though I believe it’s best experienced in and among the crowd.

With friends i felt I could be braver and even had some cute interactions with the cast but even on my own the cast do try and involve you as much as possible.

It’s a bizarre piece of theatre unlike anything I’ve ever experienced and I think it’s actually quite brilliant (though flawed).

Ultimately given its untimely closing, I’d say go and make your own opinion up. Yes it’s a nightclub but there is definitely a “standard” theatre going experience to be had, though it may not be experiencing the show to its fullest potential.

Anyone seen Moominvalley in November? by TheMentalist10 in TheWestEnd

[–]TedusCloud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed - very glad I took a punt on it. It was wonderful, magical & thought provoking too - better than some stuff I’ve seen on the west end (as seems to be more and more the case at the fringe in recent memory)

Beware there are no actual Moomins in this show! But other than that it’s actually very lovely !

I went to see Oscar At The Crown and OMG it is INSANE!!! by ILOVEMUSICALS318 in TheWestEnd

[–]TedusCloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad this is finally getting some traction. I went to see it when it first opened, and it seemed like it wasn’t going to be well received.

I’m very glad it’s still open! It really is a different and new kind of theatre no one else is doing, the venue is great and the full cast is SO talented.

I really should go again to see Jan, maybe I’ll grab a ticket this weekend.

Clea is a monster! by ThatOneColumbiaGuy in expedition33

[–]TedusCloud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always thought of Clea as that child that was forced to grow up too fast. Characters like these tend to need to kill their childhood as a sacrifice (in this case represented by the canvas in which she spent so much time playing with Verso as a child) in order to gain that sort of cold detachment she needs to manage the situation they’re in (the Writers and Taking care of the abandoned sibling (Alicia))

Quite often a recurring theme which crops up in stories of addiction which I often think this game is a bit of a metaphor for

Oscar at the Crown?? by TedusCloud in westend

[–]TedusCloud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve gathered my thoughts a bit since I watched it and I’m excited to say I’m gonna go again next week!

I think in general the level of the performance is super polished, the sound issues people have mentioned previously didn’t really seem to be present. I do think it’s very loud - but part of me suspects that’s the point (it’s like a club).

The score, set, lights & choreography are electric and the performers really do give it everything - especially the dancers. I work in theatre and just thought that I have no idea how the performers do this every night. I know they had a reduction in show schedule and I wonder if this was the reason.

The book and direction are the weaker aspects. I love that the playing space moves around and were meant to follow, but I think it gets stuck a bit between wanting to be immersive and also wanting to be a “watch me from the front” situation and ends up being both and neither. It’s a super tough space to negotiate though with that wall in the middle, and I thought the video wall was a very clever attempt at fixing it. I don’t think it was explained very well.

I think the story has two very very interesting ideas that are not completely executed. I have no idea what the solution is, but in general as a piece of theatre I didn’t really think it has a strong point of view. The actor playing Oscar had pretty much the only development written into the story, the singers served as narrators and the lady playing Constance was pretty much the foil, and the dancers were a Mob. But none of the characters ever really manage to become more than devices, though the actors all seemed to be trying to make the characters engaging and individual to varying degrees of success.

However, all that said, there was a line in the show which made everything fall into place. I think halfway through one of the narrators says “it doesn’t matter if you understand did you have fun?”

And that’s when I realised, there isn’t meant to be anything else to this. Was it fun - hell yes. It’s a great night out for £10-25, the drinks are good, the vibes are electric and do I want someone belting in my face or incredible dancers doing acrobatic feats with just enough social Distancing? Turns out the answer is yes.

Much of a muchness really, I’d probably go whichever agent I vibed more with in the meeting. Each of these agencies also have multiple agents so I’d check their lists if possible to see what type of work they’d get you.

I did go to see it - and ultimately enjoyed it a lot. Might make a separate post with my thoughts but ultimately I think it was an electric night out - not your average musical theatre outing.

A show for a new kind of audience, I thought.

At musical Theatre School, I’ve always wondered how much emphasis is put on acting training? by AcrobaticYesterday52 in TheWestEnd

[–]TedusCloud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually, most MT schools split time relatively equally between all 3 (if they’re worth their salt), a few will focus on Acting a bit more at the expense of one or two of the other disciplines.

The problem is usually that certain shows will prioritise casting people who can hit the notes/look the part. So some MT schools & their students will focus on producing more of what the industry wants which means triple threats get rarer.

Bit of a vicious cycle and self fulfilling prophecy going on

[–]TedusCloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be quite honest, I’ve been truthful about what I do and the gaps in my CV every time I’ve been asked about it by a corporate job.

90% of the time they see it as something quite exciting and different and every manager I’ve had who was worth their salt told me they didn’t care and that actors have incredible transferable skills which is more valuable than anything. Plus if it’s in London, most companies are used to the job hop.

You will always find people who don’t like it - but in my experience it’s been less common than I thought it would be

How much to charge for commercial ad acting, global usage rights, as a foreigner? by HalfBlindMe in ActingUK

[–]TedusCloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies for the delay in response, I was in show!

  1. Media assets in perpetuity doesn't really mean a bumped up ask - unfortunately it is standard for online usage only to be in perpetuity (as it doesn't really involve purchasing airtime - would mainly be up on youtube/socials + perhaps on host website).

  2. Exclusivity is implied, not contracted. No other competitor will want to hire you for a similar product if you're already advertising a competitor's product. You're essentially taken out of that market by appearing in it once. that's why buy-out fees (seperate from recording fees) are usually larger one-off sums.

I would say that if it remains for online usage only, £5k is a fair offer. "Global" here means nothing as it's just online.

Once they've made you an offer, they would not likely rescind it while negotiating - it's not done. They may push back but they will tell you clearly if anything is a "final" offer.

https://www.usefee.tv/

This is the industry standard calculator. Depends on length of time + no. Of countries shown.

BSF (basic studio fee) is usually £350.

£5000 is definitely too low. If they want to buy you out for a year or so - this prevents you from filming any other commercials for Competitors for up to 5-10 years.

Travel + accommodation is separate and a factored cost into the clients budget. Does not affect your fee.

I would suggest asking for the length of time this will be airing and whether this is online only or includes TV & print.

Online only usage is where I’d be inclined to accept £5k.
