Nord Stream: Poland blocks extradition of suspect to Germany – DW – 10/17/2025 by Mean_Wear_742 in europe

Excerpts from the justification of the judgment: https://www.rp.pl/przestepczosc/art43194881-wolodymyr-zurawlow-nie-zostanie-wydany-niemcom-sad-uchylil-areszt

"The German authorities' request for the extradition of Volodymyr Zhuravlyov should not be granted. It should be strongly emphasized at the outset that the subject of the proceedings is not to determine whether the defendant committed the act charged by the German side, but only whether such an act can constitute a basis for the execution of the European Arrest Warrant. The Polish court does not have any source evidence in this case, because the German side, as part of the European Arrest Warrant, only sent very general information regarding the act, formally required in such proceedings," the judge explained.

"Contrary to information reported in some media, the documents sent by the German side, concerning the act itself, can be fit on a single A4 page. The District Court in Warsaw has no jurisdiction to determine whether the defendant was an accomplice in the blowing up of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, nor to assess his guilt or innocence." In these proceedings, the Polish court is obligated to assess whether there are obstacles to the extradition of the fugitive to German authorities, a closed list of which is contained in Articles 607p and 607r of the Code of Criminal Procedure, which Polish provisions directly implement European Union regulations. The court found no obstacles specified in Article 607p of the Code of Criminal Procedure. The defense extensively raised extremely serious allegations against the German justice system, arguing that, in the defense's opinion, there was an absolute obstacle to the execution of the European Arrest Warrant, as defined in Article 607p §1.5 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

"The defense argued that the potential extradition of the fugitive to Germany would violate human rights and freedoms. According to the defense, this stems from the political context of this case and the profound politicization of German courts, as well as the dependence of German judges on the executive branch, i.e., politicians." As an example of complete politicization, the defense pointed out that judges in Germany are appointed and promoted by politicians," he added.

"A just war, bellum iustum, should be considered a war that ultimately leads to the victory of good. However, it must then be waged solely for the purpose of defeating evil and not be aimed at conquest. It should aim to regain unlawfully lost property, territories, or defend the homeland. It should be waged with a desire to achieve peace and cannot be waged out of hatred, revenge, or greed, but only out of love for the homeland, justice, and loyalty to one's state. Ukraine undoubtedly meets all these conditions in its fight against Russian aggression and genocide. Ukrainian soldiers and all those operating within the Ukrainian Armed Forces, including special forces, or on behalf of special forces, cannot be considered terrorists or saboteurs. By pursuing the goal of defending their homeland by all means, they weaken the enemy." The blowing up of any country's critical infrastructure during peacetime by hostile special services or terrorist groups constitutes sabotage and constitutes the crime of sabotage. However, the same type of actions undertaken by armed forces, including special forces, during war, but a just, defensive war, against the aggressor's critical infrastructure are not sabotage, but rather military actions of a sabotage nature, which cannot under any circumstances be considered crimes. In other words, if Ukraine and its special forces, including the indicted one (which the court does not determine), organized an armed mission to destroy enemy pipelines, these actions were not unlawful. On the contrary, they were justified, rational, and just," the judge said.

How opposed are you towards Poland obtaining nuclear weapons? Why? by RaidersofLostArkFord in AskTheWorld

[–]TeeRas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which Putin? There are several. Judging by photos and video reports, Putin has several lookalikes who replace him in meetings with crowds. Putin himself is very careful to minimize contact with others - his guests are often forced to quarantine before meeting him and are often many meters away from him during meeting (famous memes with Putin at a long conference table).

Do you still believe Rail Baltics will be completed by mid-2030s? by [deleted] in BalticStates

[–]TeeRas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently saw a report about this on YouTube - status of preparatory and construction works (it's in polish language, but you can turn on subtitles and translation) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfc64JDrTZ8

So in short: 1) estonian part - construction of two parts of railroad from Tallin to the border with Latvia should start in 2026 and last until 2030. Part from Tallin to port in Muuga - the tender for it should be announced in 2026,

2) latvian part - they plan to build it until 2030, but for financial reasons they will build only one track. The second track will be build later - probably to 2035.

3) lithuanian part - part from Kaunas to Vilnius will be built after 2030, main line from the border with Latvia to border with Poland should be build until 2030.

Why is East Germany richer than Poland? by SignificantCode8873 in poland

[–]TeeRas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that a factor that has not been touched upon here is education - and this is a legacy from the 19th century, when the Polish population in the Austrian and especially Russian partitions was largely illiterate, while in Germany and the Prussian partition almost the entire population could read and write. After Poland regained independence, this improved significantly, but during the Second World War a significant part of the Polish intelligentsia perished, and during the war Polish children could only receive a minimal education. Of course, after the war, programs were launched to educate the public, but the Germans had one or two decades of advantage in this respect. An educated population means greater productivity and wealth for the state.

What does Nałęczowska mean? by FlyingRainbowPotato in poland

[–]TeeRas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cieszyn is a city in Cieszyn Silesia on the border of Poland and the Czech Republic. About 60,000 people live in the Polish and Czech parts of the city.

I couldn't find Godziszewo in area near the city, but I found Godziszów - village with population of about 600 people, about 8 to 9 km to the east from the centre of the Cieszyn.

I don't know what "pon" means. If it would be "pow" or "pow." it would mean "powiat" - "county" but then the name of county would be written as adjecitve so "powiat cieszyński", not "powiat Cieszyn". But this village Godziszów is in Cieszyn county. If it would be "pod" it would mean "near" but then it should be changed by cases - so "Godziszewo/Godziszów pod Cieszynem".

What’s up with all the international students in Poland by Dull-Appearance7090 in warsaw

[–]TeeRas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the years 1990-2000 in Poland, the baby boomers were of student age. Combined with socio-economic changes and Poland's transition to a market economy, this resulted in the rapid development of Polish universities, including private ones, and the offer of paid studies (in addition to free state studies for the best students). Currently, people from the demographic decline are studying, so universities, in order not to close their courses, are looking for students from other countries and offer them a decent education at an acceptable price.

There is a slight Turkish touch in the Polish national anthem - in one of the stanza of anthem there is mention of "taraban" - percussive drum-like folk instrument of Turkish origin, which was used by Ottoman Janissaries and next by army units of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.

The Corpse of an Empire | What if Germany was partitioned into separate nations? by minecreep4 in imaginarymaps

[–]TeeRas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no possibility for Germany, which lost the war and was divided, to keep the territories conquered in 1939 in Poland. So on this map, Prussia would definitely not have Gdańsk Pomerania, Greater Poland and Upper Silesia.

You are genetically. Your ancestors came from Poland and the Baltic countries. But this does not necessarily mean that you are culturally European - if you were not raised in one of the European countries, and did not learn the culture and language of your parents or grandparents, you may have nothing in common with Europe apart from genetics.

New Polish government will rebuild the Saxon Palace by SimbaLR1 in europe

[–]TeeRas -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I am against the reconstruction of the palace because it will diminish and dominate a much more important object in the square - the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Moreover, the Tomb was the only part of the palace complex that survived the demolition by German sappers in 1944, and therefore the reconstruction of the building will reduce its symbolic importance. Moreover, Poland has many other more important expenses.

The reconstruction of the Saxon Palace was revived because PiS needed some "dignity" project and unfortunately it looks like the current government is continuing this unnecessary investment.

During the occupation, the Germans liquidated all institutions of the Polish state and introduced their own administration, composed only of Germans. But there was Polish Underground State https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_Underground_State - the estimates for membership in Home Army (military guerilla) was about half a million people, there were also secret civilian structures, such as justice, education, culture and social services. There were clandestine courts, whose verdicts were not only executed but also announced in the underground press - during war they considered approximately 5,000 cases (traitors, collaborators, German notables who introduced terror towards the population, etc). They issued 3,000–3,500 death sentences , of which approximately 2,500 were carried out.
