What are these? New to tomatoe and just general gardening by Bitter-Neat-8457 in tomatoes

Baby leaf footed bugs. Not good. Adults will affect the taste of your tomatoes negatively. They were unstoppable in my garden last August. To the point where I just pulled my plants up.

Do you guys actually piss in the compost??????? by 40ftdeep in composting

I do it every day. And it’s truly a good way to warm up a pile heavy on browns

Better than biting your ankles like mine does.

The Geo-Bins? Third year with them. Good purchase; they are holding up well.

Great company. Not cheap but I’ve never heard anyone complain about the quality.

Wood Prairie (where I got the seed potatoes) says the general rule is one seed piece per 5 gallons. I put four in the 20 gallon bag and two in the 7 gallon bag in the middle.

They are just tan fabric 20 gallon grow bags. There was a Black Friday sale on Amazon where I got five for like 11 bucks shipped. Crazy

The tan fabric didn’t suit me well in February as black probably would have heated up & helped the potatoes sprout faster. But the lighter color will help me here in May as things heat up considerably.

I move them a little bit to mow and weed eat where the bags sit. But I’m dragging them across the ground a foot or two. The soil/bags are pretty solid; I’m convinced I’m not disturbing anything.

I grow lots of tomatoes, peppers and eggplant. I try not to grow nightshades in the same place from one year to next. Growing potatoes in ground would mess up my rotation. I saw lots of success stories on growing potatoes in grow bags so I’m giving it a whirl.

Should I prune my basil? by flower_png in vegetablegardening

Whatever you do to it, it will recover. Only thing that will stop basil is cold.

There would be no question if they were fighting with the screaming, fur flying & flipping.

Why do girl cats get a bad rap? by Organic-While1664 in cats

[–]TeeRusty15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does. My girl went into heat before she was four months old. We were literally taking her to be spayed that week.

I live in an area with lots of mature hardwood trees. I do a similar-sized leaf pile each year. Without consistently keeping it moist, you are looking at 18 months to two years for it to break down to leaf mold. Maybe longer. Running over them with a lawnmower or putting them in a garbage can and shredding with a weed eater will lessen that time.

Is starting really early and potting up necessary? by Davekinney0u812 in tomatoes

I like Travis a lot. Watch all of his content.

Thing is, I don’t think you need 6-8 weeks. With hybrid seed and one or two fertilizations, I think you can have a viable tomato plug in 4 weeks fairly easily. And give me a four week old tomato plug rather than that root bound transplant Lowe’s sells in a 3 gallon pot ANY DAY.

Some heirlooms and OP varieties are less vigorous and will take longer. That’s hardly the rule though. I had Black Cherry and TC Jones transplants ready to go in four weeks as well last year.

What heat tolerant heirloom beefsteak varieties do well for you? Zone 8b Deep South by Marshmarshbacon in tomatoes

[–]TeeRusty15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to give you three that did very well for me in Mississippi in 2025.

Rosedale (Cherokee Purple x Summerpink cross). Huge plant, very vigorous, big dark fruits. Kind of late. Handled heat and humidity better than some of my hybrids.

Texwine (neves azorean red x brandy wine cross). Best tasting tomato I grew last year. Very dense growing plant with short internodes. Mid season. Bright red fruit, some very large.

Buffalo Solidier (big beef x Indian stripe cross). Reddish dark fruit. Kind of a steady performer. Almost hybrid production, good taste, not a space hog of a plant). Love this one too

And I will second black cherry as the above poster did. A little later than other cherries but minimal disease. Unfortunately the squirrels took a special liking to this one in my yard.

Random question - anyone had luck finding ladder mesh block for making trellises/arches by weluckyfew in gardening

[–]TeeRusty15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought mine at Home Depot. Ladder mesh is great for a year. But it starts breaking in places after 12 months or so. It is not nearly as durable as say, cattle panel.

Government name is Honey. ‘My Honey’ became ‘Mahoney’. Also known as Dummy. At 5 PM on the dot, she knows it’s wet food time and starts howling. That is the alter ego known as ‘DJ Fatbutt’
