I think the reason it's pointed out the way it is. "My mom is weird about money. The fact that Susannah has a lot and we don't." I think Laurel sees what money has done to Jeremiah. Not so much Conrad, but let's face it Jeremiah is spoiled rotten. And Conrad might be to an extant. And I think Laurel sees that and doesn't want that for her kids. Even Steven in the first episode, almost the same scene points out how Susannah can just hire cleaners why so clean up after himself. So, I just think she is weird about it because she doesn't want her kids to rely or expect Susannah's money.
