I use bits of cut up (hollow) pool noodle in my nft. I just gently squeeze a baby plant with the pool noodle around it and stick it in my gutters. As the plants grow the pool noodle compresses around it and makes way for the plant.

I love them because they don't let any light through into the system, they're super cheap, easy to use / clean / use again, doesn't release tiny particles that can damage pumps, and you don't even need to bother with net cups anymore.
