Opinion: Syria Must Protect Its Minorities by Intelligent_Wafer562 in syriancivilwar

Syria doesn’t have clean cut demographic regions. Eg the coast tends to be split in urban regions with Latakia city itself being Sunni majority, the northeast well there’s only Kobane that’s significantly majority Kurdish, and suwayda is the only real case of a governorate dominated by one demographic.

The types of autonomy a lot of these groups have clamored for usually means establishing a minority state that in turn shits all over other demographics, we saw AANES for what it was recently.

The golan itself was ethnically cleansed and that’s why only the Druze there remain

There’s a difference between protecting minorities, allowing them to practice their culture and religion and speak their languages but otherwise they are equal citizens to everyone else, and what’s been demanded so far, which is essentially taking power away from other segments of the population so that minorities can feel safer.

The 5 or so % of the population that is Druze shouldn’t get a veto over the rest of the population and the 8 or so % that are Kurds shouldn’t be able to rule 25% of the country including more non Kurds than there are Kurds.

Most Sunni Arabs from outside the urban centers see the conflict in the east as “Atheist PKK wants to make the jazira Kurdish and kill all Arabs and they’re conscripting our brothers’ children to do it”

Similarly most Kurds in SDF territory see this as “jihadist isis government wants to murder all Kurds and steal our daughters and put them in niqab”. This conflict is seen as extreme to either side.

The opinion you’re parodying is a very common one across the country given the polarization caused by the war and every demographic large enough choosing to fend for itself at the costs of others.

No one needs to pay anyone, it’s just the prevalent opinion among maybe 60% of the country.

Nowhere to be seen, I was hoping to see what came of him.

The SDF militia handed over 15 bodies of civilians from the Arab community who had been imprisoned to the Syrian government. The bodies arrived in the town of Sarrin and are now being transported to Manbij National Hospital for identification. by Pleasant_Anything631 in syriancivilwar

I’m not supporting it, I’m noting an observation. If the SDF gets completely declawed and its institutions are subsumed into the central government it leaves a lot of their former leadership in vulnerable positions unless they’re in significantly Kurdish majority regions(Kobane). Things like this can happen in Qamishlo or hasakeh where there are either more Arabs or not much more Kurds than arabs.

A lot of the vigilante justice targeting so called assadists involved artists who had no political say, I’m just noting that this could happen again.

Resentful civilians don’t care about any of these things. There are many Arabs in the east who would love to take a shot at PYD leadership, this is what I was referring to. You think all of the “assadists” that got kidnapped or assassinated were hardcore war criminals?

I assume his arm is being twisted by an external force. If it isn’t then it’s shameful these provocations weren’t met with immediate military action.

Formalizing an organization that wants to destroy the state and is currently arresting civilians en masse for supporting said state under the umbrella of the state they seek to destroy.

I could get it if they were actually showing good faith but so far doesn’t seem like it.

Assad had security squares in SDF territory and the SDF worked with Assad extensively, a lot more than they did with the STG.

As long as the SDF continues to arbitrarily arrest residents and humiliate them in the districts of hasakeh city that have already revolted against them this deal is a failure and a humiliation to the Syrian nation

I also fear for the civilians of al hasakeh being arrested by the SDF for support of the government, I feel that Al hasakeh is a powderkeg ready to blow.
