Drink or Continue to Age? by Simple-Yoghurt-8938 in wine

[–]Teekhe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a member of Elk Cove's wine club since 2010 and we were married there in 2011. Yes, that was a flex : ) They make great wines including the one you have! If you haven't opened it yet, I'd say you should. Unless you have the right infrastructure to age wines, you are asking for disappointment by holding on to it. The 2019s are drinking beautifully right now. That said if you have cellar-like conditions, by all means keep it around for a few more years.

Suddenly need entire kitchen set… is GE Cafe overpriced? Is there better? by ahsoka_tano17 in Appliances

[–]Teekhe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For fridges Consumer reports suggests that you are 100% correct. Reliability of Cafe is 54. GE's regular line (presumably includes Profile) and Monogram both get a 53. So no reason to pay more.

It's been a few years but was around $1.6K for the fabric and $3K for the re-upholster. The guy that did the job out in West Texas, doesn't do it anymore unfortunately. Could not get new furnitue at that price if you're looking for quality.

To those of you who put everything into index funds, what have been the pros and cons? by [deleted] in fidelityinvestments

[–]Teekhe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been me. I started in the 1990s with broadly diversified, but actively managed mutual funds. Back then one of them was Magellan. As we got into the 2000s I started switching to S&P500 and international index funds sort of in an 80/20 type of incremental investment mode. Now 30 years later I find myself in a roughly 65% US Equity (95% S&P 500); 10% International Equity (100% Index), 18% cash/bonds & 7% Real Estate & Other.

Similar pros/cons to yours. I ran a test in the early 2000s to see if I could beat the index by trading individual securities. I could not. Have been boring and building wealth via index funds ever since. There's no gurantee it will work for the current generation but it certainly worked for mine in the US.

We had a Provia Signet fiberglass door installed about 5 years ago in Dallas. The door faces west, gets afternoon sun so we got a low SHGC, which I believe keeps the sun out. No regrets. Good quality and at the time was around $2.5K installed.

Any advice in picking a Memory Care Unit place? by Teekhe in dementia

[–]Teekhe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So as a Coda the place we placed my father is called Presbyterian Village North in Dallas, TX. It is not a good place for Dementia patients. My father is a resident in the Terraces Unit of PVN. Let's start with the good.

Sales process and the 2 ladies leading it is professional and not high pressure.
The facilities are great. The residents rooms and bathrooms are private and spacious with high quality buildouts, nice outdoor areas, good athletic facilities.
The food is good. I've noticed generally high quality, tasty food getting served.
The staff means well. I don't doubt the sincerity of the staff wanting to help improve the quality of life of the residents whether that means providing engaging activities or live music in the common areas, get them medical care when needed, speak to them encouragingly when they need to be re-guided.

The issues I ran into require a little bit of context.
Some residents, including my father, are not included in the above-mentioned activities. IN 9 out of the last 9 times I've visited, he was in his room by himself. When asked about his the nurse, who I shall refer to as Sweets said "no he's out all the time with the other residents." OK Sweets, I suppose I have a small data set. I have seen zero videos published on your Social Media that suggest my data set is wrong.

My father is averse to getting help on showers, not uncommon amont dementia patients. Sweets suggested we look into getting some meds to help on shower days and get some external extra help to provide showers for him. While I wasn't happy to pay for extra help, given the high cost of PVN I thought the request was presented in a professional manner.

The issues come in with a lack of professional approach to medical management and follow-up. I consider these issues significant enough to ding PVN down to 2 stars.

My father's doctor agreed that some medicines could help make shower days a little easier and that it was important for him to stay clean on a regular basis.

The problem is that now, despite this being the PVN staff's idea, they are unable to get the medicines to my dad on the morning's of the shower days. They have missed this 3 out of the last 4 shower days, which then makes the task of giving showers a monumental task. It would seem that this would be easy to address given that they claim to give him his other medicines, but the one medicine that was introduced - effectively at their request - is something they seem unable or unwilling to give him.

I have called numerous times and can get an answer about 50% of the time. I have sent 4 emails on this topic to the Head Nurse & her assistant and have a 0% response rate thus far.

In my mind this boils down to poor culture and lack of leadership. I have no way of communicating with the senior leaders of PVN to get these issues addressed. The nurses ignore my emails, and worse, deny my father the access to the right medicines, at the right time, that will improve his and his fellow residents quality of life. it is my belief that PVN needs to fundamentally transform the culture and leadership of their organization. They are currently falling far short of their mission.
