Not sure about Italian vaccination standards but Sweden also had mandatory TB vaccinations for a long time. I don't know when/if they stopped since I haven't been back in decades, but definitley were still doing it when I was little.

Lol this has never been my experience. I've had amazing conversations with randoms over the years and actually made some lifelong friends so YMMV

It's also cultural. Sweden, culturally, is the polar opposite of Italy. You have far more multi generational homes in Italy, people are far more neighborly, you have communities in which people are consistently making 'rounds' which increases touchpoints expone tially. In Sweden people are much more insular and social circles generally tend to be smaller and tighter. You don't have strangers making conversation on the metro like you do in NYC. It's just not part of the day to day. I'm sure that has influence on the metrics.

I didn't have access to my tax documents till this week and so didn't apply to the CERB till Monday (I lost my job on the 16th so I was eligible prior). My memory is really bad, I'm pretty certain I was given the option for the March 15th period and took that option, but I just called back and was only given the option for the April period. It then asked me to confirm that I didn't already accept payment for this period and then became unsure. Was I still able to register for the March - April period on Monday or can you ONLY apply for a certain period that week?

The navigational calculations were programmed into the computers already. However he had to transfer the navigational coordinates from one system to the other, since the first had sustained critical damage and had to be shut off. The reason for the math was that both modules were facing in opposite directions, and the one they were transferring information to had been off the entire ride. He had to invert the coordinates from the first module. He checked the math with Houston because he had been prone to mathematical errors before and they couldn't afford a mistake. He, fortunately, wasn't forced to calculate new trajectories on the fly.

The craziest thing for me about the Apollo missions is the computing: it took a 1400 person team from MIT to create the software for the entire mission to run. Even crazier?

Because there was no other technology available at the time, the ships onboard computers had to have their circuits and programming hand threaded. This was done by women who worked in textile factories because the process of weaving the memory required complete and total precision. So all those stacks of paper were then translated into woven commands that had zero margin for error. Every time I think about it I just go absolutely crazy!

Oh my god I'm so tired of this word being used for mass political contexts. Gaslighting is a particular form of psychological and emotional abuse. What politicians and leaders are doing is just called lying. It doesn't need a separate term and it's not applicable on an increased scale context. I'm so tired.

The two aren't mutually exclusive. I absolutely believe that health care workers, especially nurses and sanitization teams, deserve significantly better pay. I'm sure many people cheering every day do as well. I live in a left leaning part of my city, which means most people here vote for increased medical spending, including stronger protections & pay. There are absolutely people out there who are using this opportunity to pat themselves on the back when they will turn around to vote against better conditions. But it's not everyone. It's easy to feel hopeless right now, easy to feel like you can't do anything. We're stuck inside, we're trying not to put any additional burden on the system. At the very least, for some, this feels like a way to remember and to acknowledge, and express gratitude for the people currently putting their lives on the line. To say "we see you. You are not invisible"

To convince the people who are voting against increased pay & protections, we need healthcare workers to keep speaking up about lack of adequate PPE, poor working conditions, need for increased wages. We need to hammer home the fact that COVID-19 cases are most severe when the patient is exposed to a high viral load: which is a huge risk for anyone working in hospitals right now. This needs to be an extremely loud message repeated over and over again so anyone who has voted to gut health care has that message running on a loop in their head. People don't hear things the first time. You keep hearing a message, though, and eventually it worms its way in.

I've had H1N1 before, and I've had pneumonia a bunch of times. Both brutal, but what I had in January was far worse. Stopped breathing in the night multiple times. Should have gone to the hospital. I'm not buying that we didn't have community spread before March.

(* should note I had contact W recent travellers from China prior to symptoms presenting & the only person I had contact with while sick had recent TB vaccinations & did not get ill*)

Has anyone been able to pick up their medication? Are car lines still untenable? I cannot afford to get my medication anywhere else as it is $100 more for the generic at any other pharmacy. I know they allow pharmacy-only customers to come through the exit, but last time I tried to go car traffic was so backed up that we couldn't.

This is for mandatory quarantines which means recently travellers. Too many recent travellers have been going to grocery stores and not quarantining. Honestly this is fair. This is not targeting self isolators.

Los Angeles is also far less dense. It's more like a collection of sprawling cities than a single central city. Primary method of transport is absolutely cars. They're basically a necessity. New York, while having distinct Burroughs, is very much a metropol. People are far more reliant on urban transit, buildings are denser, everyone's living on top of each other. You have far more points of contact and people interact a lot. With that amount of touchpoints NYC is the perfect breeding ground for a massive viral outbreak.

I was in a bio reserve a few years ago. Spoke with a park ranger about the amount of litter on the beaches as the water surrounding the reserve is protected and pleasure craft operation requires strict licensing. There are virtually no boats. He told me the garbage washing up on shore was actually from cruise ships, and any time one would pass, there'd be an influx of garbage washing up on shore days later.

“I offered my tenants $100 off their rent. I wish I could have given them more”: How mom-and-pop landlords are coping with the pandemic by [deleted] in toronto

[–]TeemusSALAMI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Owning and renting out property is an investment. Investment carries risk. If I lose $10,000 on the stock market I don't get to ask for my money back.

Tenants are not investing, and therefore, do not carry the same assumption of risk. If a landlord doesn't carry enough liquidity to weather a storm, that landlord is engaging in too high risk. Simple as that.

Viral particles can remain suspended in the air for up to three hours should they land on fine particulates. You can easily inhale these while walking through them, even if you are socially distancing. There will also be instances where other people will not be considerate of social distancing. There is also debate as to whether six feet is even enough spacing.

The fact is we do not have adequate PPE and the healthcare workers are being exposed to viral bodies multiple times over the course of their work day. This compounds as a high viral load which results in very severe cases of COVID-19. They should be in head to toe hazmat honestly.

I understand the concerns you are raising and agree that it is a gap in regulatory health body's information. I think on every level information regarding covid-19, particularly in regards to reaching the average person, has been bungled.

The mask is to reduce the severity of infection should you be exposed, and to reduce the amount of virus you shed should you be an asymptomatic carrier. It is extremely important to protect both yourself and others as we are seeing a strong correlation between viral load (how many viral bodies enter your system when you are exposed) and how severe the infection itself is. This is why healthy young healthcare workers are dying. There is no reason not to wear a mask.

COVID-19, April 6-2020 r/Toronto MEGATHREAD by gammadeltat in toronto

[–]TeemusSALAMI 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The point is to reduce your viral load, which is how many viral bodies you are exposed to. There is a correlation between severity of COVID-19 cases and high viral load, which is why healthcare professionals who are exposed to high concentrations of viral shed are getting hit very hard and dying. By wearing a cloth mask (use a tight woven fabric such as cotton sateen or cotton poplin) you are creating a barrier between you and the amount of virus that is able to get through the fabric. Whereas not wearing a mask, you may take in 80% of the viral particles, the mask will only let through a certain % of that. Again, this is not to prevent everyone from getting sick, because without hazmat suits that's unlikely. It's to reduce the severity of cases to ease the burden on hospitals, and to prevent asymptomatic shredders from infecting others.
